Los Angeles Rams Unveil New Logos & Colors Amid Skepticism From Fans

Los Angeles Rams’ COO Kevin Demoff confirmed Monday that the brand new logo released in March will be donned by the team starting next season despite backlash from former Rams’ Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson and fans on social media.

Demoff has been working on the new logo for the last two years and promised to read mean tweets if the Rams’ telethon with KABC, a local Los Angeles ABC partner, raised more than $2 million for coronavirus (COVID-19) relief. The effort helped raise over $2.2 million, so Demoff honored his promise and read negative tweets about the Rams’ logo alteration in a video posted on his Twitter feed (below).

Of the nine tweets read by Demoff, one user commented, “This is actually embarrassing. Looks like some freshman college students in Graphic Design 101 made it in about 6 minutes.”

Another wrote, “There’s a Rams logo debate? What’s it between? Trash and hot garbage?”

Perhaps the most comical remark of the segment was from a fan who tweeted, “If you’re low on toilet paper, don’t worry. You can get it now on NFL shop. #ramslogo”

Demoff then tweeted a statement in reference to the organization’s logo selection. “While it isn’t always the easiest to hear, we value the commentary you have provided on the logo & colors,” Demoff said. “We are excited about the future of our team, our brand & our stadium, but recognize we can always get better through feedback and engagement and appreciate your passion.”

Following the initial release of the logo, Dickerson said he was “angry” with the choice and vowed to meet with ownership to voice his frustration. On Sunday he released a snippet of his conversation with Rams’ executives that read, “I spoke with the Rams front office on behalf of our great fans and former players. Unfortunately, the front office is set on their new logos. I made our feelings crystal clear…why change the best logo in the NFL?”

The March release of the logo is part of a full uniform change that will be revealed this spring as they move into their new home next season at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, ESPN reported.

The NFL Hall of Fame Board sent a letter to commissioner Roger Goodell, Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith and the Hall of Fame’s president David C. Baker. In it, many high-profile Hall of Famers stated they would boycott the annual introduction ceremony until Hall of Famers receive health insurance and an annual salary, including a pension.

NFL Legends Threaten To Boycott League

Names like Eric Dickerson, chair of the new board, Jerry RiceKurt Warner, Marcus Allen, Mel Blount, Derrick Brooks, and Jim Brown signed on. Earl Campbell, Marshall Faulk, Ronnie Lott, Curtis Martin, Joe Namath, Deion Sanders, Lawrence Taylor and Sarah White, Reggie White’s widow, also were on the letter.

In it, they said, “We, the undersigned Pro Football Hall of Famers, were integral to the creation of the modern NFL, which in 2017 generated $14 billion in revenue.” The letter goes on, saying, “People know us from our highlight reels. They see us honored and mythologized before games and at halftime, and it would be reasonable if they thought life was good for us. But on balance, it’s not. As a group we are struggling with severe health and financial problems. To build this game, we sacrificed our bodies. In many cases, and despite the fact that we were led to believe otherwise, we sacrificed our minds. We believe we deserve more. We write to demand two things: Health insurance and annual salary for all Hall of Famers that includes a share of league revenue.” The signers stated that “more than a few of us don’t even know who or where we are. Our long careers left us especially vulnerable to the dangers of this violent sport, especially those intentionally hidden from us.”

They also questioned Goodell’s $40 million annual salary, which is $6.5 million more than the highest-paid player, as well as a $1 billion dollar Hall of Fame village being built in Canton, Ohio. The letter outlines that the total cost to provide Hall of Famers with health care is less than $4 million. The NFL makes that with a 30-second Super Bowl commercial. It’s .05% of the league’s annual revenue. Yet they refuse to provide it. By comparison, one day in MLB provides any player with lifetime healthcare.

This comes as the NFL prepares to celebrate it’s 100th anniversary in 2020.  The letter states, “Until our demands are met, the Hall of Famers will not attend the annual induction ceremony in Canton. It’s well-known that the NFL is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2020, and while we are proud of our role in building this league, we don’t believe 100 years of player exploitation is something to celebrate. As we approach this momentous date, we challenge the NFL to honor its past by helping retired players instead of exploiting their images for marketing purposes.”

The move has been criticized. Rice said he wasn’t part of the board and will not boycott the ceremonies. However, he does support efforts to improve health insurance and benefits to all current and retired NFL players.

Warner also claimed his name was mistakenly attached to the letter but said he does support the effort to gain better lifetime benefits for all NFL players.

After being asked why the plan is only for Hall of Famers, Dickerson told ESPN: “The players make the NFL. It’s not those jerseys, it’s the players. I just want everything to be fair. We’re not trying to beat the league. Playing in the NFL was an honor, but treat us fairly. Treat us like people think that we’re treated. People think we have this great pension. We don’t. We don’t have health care after five years. It’s not right, but this is for all players. That’s my big goal, but we have to start somewhere first. We have to start with the Hall of Famers to get this off the ground.”

Dickerson, a Hall of Famer who played with the Rams from 1983-87, told ESPN on Monday that Fisher had said he didn’t want the former rusher on the sideline during games because some of his public comments have made players “uncomfortable.”

Fisher and another Rams executive denied having expressed this message to Dickerson.

Kevin Demoff, the team’s chief operating officer, tweeted: “All Rams alumni, and especially Eric Dickerson, are always welcome at our games and practices. I have reached out to Eric to see where a miscommunication may have occurred and to clear up any confusion over his presence at games.

“Most importantly I want to make sure he knows that he is a valued member of [the] Rams’ NFL family. We all share his love for our team and our fans.”

Later, during his scheduled briefing with the media, Fisher was asked about Dickerson’s not being allowed on the sideline and said, “I don’t know where that’s coming from.” Fisher then touched on “a really good conversation” he had with Dickerson “last week” and added: “I’d welcome him in the building. I’d love to have him come in. I’d love to have him come to practice. I’d love to have him come in the meetings.”

Despite all this, Dickerson said he vowed to Fisher that he would never attend a Rams game as long as Fisher is the team’s coach.

“I won’t be at the Coliseum as long as Fisher is coaching,” Dickerson reiterated Monday. “I’m a man of my word, and if I tell you something, I’m going to do it.”

Dickerson, 56, rushed for 7,245 yards in 65 games during his four years with the Rams. He was then traded to the Indianapolis Colts midway through the 1987 season, but remained a fan of the organization upon retirement.

Nevertheless, Dickerson hasn’t minced words about the Rams’ faults. He has harshly criticized the offensive line, talked openly about how boring the offense can be and evened questioned the credentials of quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke, who he doesn’t believe has earned the right to coach a No. 1 overall pick in Jared Goff.

Demoff reportedly called Dickerson on Monday to try to set the record straight, but Dickerson was at a barbecue and didn’t answer. He said that he would return Demoff’s call on Tuesday.

The Rams will next visit the New England Patriots on Sunday.
