Conor McGregor became the first fighter in history on Saturday night to hold two UFC world championships simultaneously after knocking out Eddie Alvarez in the second round at UFC 205 in New York.

Irishman McGregor stepped up to the Octagon at Madison Square Garden to a thunderous reception while Alvarez, the man from nearby Philadelphia, was heavily booed.

McGregor, 28, was the aggressor early on as he pressed forward. He hit Alvarez early with his left hand, but the American sprang back up after only seconds on the mat. With 30 second remaining in the opening round, McGregor’s output slowed.

Round two began with McGregor again taking the center of the Octagon. Again, he hit Alvarez with his left hand, although this time the Philadelphian responded with his own jabs. The Irishman then began taunting his opponent, begging him to come forward so he could land another strong blow.

Alvarez then managed to clinch McGregor against the cage. After a minute of defending a takedown, McGregor wriggled away and then the end drew near.

The Irishman slipped an Alvarez right hand and landed a big left cross to temple. Alvarez fell to the mat after the follow-up hit and McGregor landed one hit of ground and pound before referee John McCarthy jumped in to call the fight as the Madison Square Garden crowd roared.

The fight drew a crowd of 20,427 for a live gate of $17.7 million. That was good enough to shatter MSG box-office records and UFC records.

“I want to thank the Las Vegas Culinary Union for spending their members’ dollars making this the biggest night in UFC history,” said UFC president Dana White at the post-fight press conference.

The significance of that fight evidently wasn’t lost on White, who believes it will take an otherworldly bout to surpass the numbers set by Alvarez vs McGregor.

“I don’t think that record will ever be broken,” he said. “Jesus is gonna have to fight the devil to break that record, man.”

Meanwhile, Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson fought to a majority draw (48-7, 47-47, 47-47).

In the women’s event, Poland’s Joanna Jedrzejczyk defeated compatriot Karolina Kowalkiewicz via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46).

A random encounter between Conor McGregor and Tyron Woodley at the UFC 2015 weigh-ins became heated just a few hours later on Friday after the fighters began exchanging messages on Twitter.

The original altercation didn’t appear to be anything serious after the Irish McGregor hit the scale and walked over to a table set up by the UFC staff where fighters can begin to re-energize with food and water provided for them.

McGregor was left waiting after the electricity went out in the room and he had step back onto the scale for photos. Welterweight champion Woodley, who stood by eating a piece of watermelon, emerged from the backstage area to get something from the table when he ran into McGregor.

The Irishman stared the Missouri native down as he passed and the two fighters briefly exchanged words (greetings, apparently), although McGregor made it clear he was not there to mess around.

Woodely later chose to respond on Twitter after the meeting was documented on social media.

“Some of us are really about that that life! The quiet ones are the ones really from the slums. Don’t make me go back,” Woodley wrote.

It only took approximately one hour for McGregor to respond. After that, a back-and-forth Twitter war quickly ensued.

On Thursday at the pre-fight press conference, McGregor said he was coming for “all the belts” on the table at UFC 205 and that included Woodley’s welterweight title.

McGregor and Eddie Alvarez ended up getting into an altercation on Thursday, with each one even attempting to throw a chair at the other at one point. UFC President Dana White had to separate the pair.

White and security personnel rushed the stage to stop the Irishman from turning the press conference into an absolute melee by tossing chairs around.

“I wonder what a chair would have cost me,” McGregor shouted.

White responded: “A lot.”

Following that incident, the face off between Alvarez and McGregor after the press conference was rather subdued by comparison.

The two fighters will face off at UFC 205 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez has made it clear that he wants to fight Irishman Conor McGregor in the main event at UFC 205 in New York City in November.

The rumored matchup between Alvarez and McGregor has been circulating for weeks, but no deal has yet been struck to make the bout official.

Sources informed FOX Sports on Tuesday that both mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters are on board to make the bout happen, but no official agreement has been made.

Alvarez, the 32-year-old former two-time Bellator Lightweight Champion, called out McGregor, 28, in a pair of tweets late Tuesday:

Alvarez won the title back in July when he knocked out former champion Rafael dos Anjos to claim his very first UFC gold.

In the weeks following that victory, Alvarez immediately targeted McGregor, who defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 202 in Las Vegas in August, as his next opponent. McGregor defeated Diaz via a unanimous decision.

McGregor responded to Alvarez’s tweet with a simple, two-word response early Wednesday: “Beg me,” he said.

Since the Irishman didn’t explicitly name Alvarez in his tweet, some believe it could also be a response to UFC president Dana White, who told a fan on Twitter late Tuesday that Khabib Nurmagomedov would earn the next shot at the lightweight title.

Nurmagomedov later teased Alvarez on Twitter by claiming that the title fight had been offered to him, and that he was simply waiting for the lightweight champion to respond.

UFC 205 is scheduled to take place on Nov. 12 at Madison Square Garden.

Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley announced his title fight with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson last week and as of today, that’s the only confirmed matchup for the New York City event.

Multiple other bouts, including a middleweight matchup between Chris Weidman and Yoel Romero, have been rumored for the card, but no official contracts have yet been signed as of today.

Puerto Rican-American fighter Eddie Alvarez defeated star Brazilian opponent Rafael dos Anjos to capture the UFC lightweight title via first-round TKO at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Thursday night.

Alvarez (28-4), a decided underdog and Philadelphia native, followed up the clean strike with constant pressure against the cage to stop dos Anjos.

“Rafael dos Anjos was top five pound for pound and I took him out,” said the teary-eyed, 32-year-old Puerto Rican, who won his third straight fight.

The bout was competitive in the early going as both fighters felt one another out and tried to figure out their range. Alvarez did so first, as he wobbled dos Anjos and followed up with pure ruthlessness.

“This has nothing to do with me,” Alvarez also said. “This has everything to do with my friends, my family, my trainers and my wife and kids. I love you guys.”

He went on to call dos Anjos, 31, a “resilient” fighter.

Dos Anjos, who saw his five-fight win streak come to a close, got off to a quick start by closing distance well with clean punches. He caught Alvarez flush with an overhand left and rapidly bounced back to his feet after being taken down, only to counter with a knee to Alvarez’ face in close.

Despite increasing his brutality, dos Anjos was caught by the perfect shot and was visibly injured as he retreated to the cage. Alvarez began throwing hooks from close range before nearly missing with a wild flying knee.

Two more hooks landed flush to the side of dos Anjos’ head before referee Herb Dean jumped in at 3 minutes, 49 seconds of the opening round.

“When I got caught, my hand was up, I had good form,” dos Anjos said. “It just happened.”

A former Bellator champion, Alvarez entered the fight 2-1 in the UFC since making his debut in 2014. He entered having won a pair of split-decisions over Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis.

The fight marked Dos Anjos’ first appearance since withdrawing from a title defense against featherweight Irish champion Conor McGregor at UFC 196 in March after breaking his left foot.

“I came here in the best shape of my life. I have to give all the credit to Eddie, who did a great job,” dos Anjos said. “That’s the fight game, it happens. I won 10 of my last 11 but Eddie did a great job. I think I just got caught.

“I’m pretty sure I’ll be back. I’ll come to get my belt back.”

In a highly anticipated heavyweight co-main event, Derrick Lewis pushed through fatigue to earn a split decision victory over veteran Roy Nelson.

Lewis (16-4, 1 no-contest) landed several different types of strikes on Nelson in the opening round. Nelson (21-13), however, took advantage of Lewis’ lack of wrestling skill and took him down six times over the course of the fight. He shut Lewis down entirely in the second round and got off to a good start in the third.

However, Lewis rallied back in the final round and got the victory via split decision, taking two out of three 29-28 scores for his fourth straight win.

“It is what it is,” Lewis said. “The Black Beast in the house. S–t,that’s what I’m talking about. I don’t care how tired I’m going to get, I’m going to keep swinging.”
