Nick Kyrgios showcased to the fans the “Nick Kyrgios Effect” against his opponent Dominic Thiem. From the underarm that won him the second set to the between-the-legs miss that conceded the third set, Kyrgios was having the time of his life after taking an early two-set lead over his opponent.

The 25-year-old Australian was egging the crowd on while he was winning, but soon, the vibe in the stadium changed.

Kyrgios was going up against the second-seeded Theim on Friday. Theim is the current U.S. Open champion and last year’s Australian Open runner up. In September, at the Meadows field, the Austrian made history by becoming the first man in 71 years to come back to win the final after dropping the first two sets.

So it was no surprise that after being down two sets, the Austrian-born Theim began a comeback. The comeback forced a five-setter, which became Kyrgios’ second consecutive five-setter at the 10,500-capacity John Cain Arena. The 25-year-old’s previous five-set match was against Ugo Humbert. Kyrgios erased two match points to eliminate Humbert.

Today, it was Kyrgios’ time to lose. Theim’s comeback proved too much for the 25-year-old as he lost and was eliminated from the tournament. For the Austrian, it is a step closer to reaching the finals again.

After the match, Theim said of the fans in attendance, “This was a good last match before the lockdown.” This was said because the state government imposed a five-day lockdown due to an uptick in coronavirus cases. Theim will be preparing for his next match against Grigor Dimitrov. The match will be played with no audience.

Rafael Nadal is not entirely sure yet if he will play at Wimbledon next month, despite having secured another French Open victory.

The 32-year-old Spaniard defeated seventh seed Dominic Thiem of Austria 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 at Roland Garros in Paris on Sunday to claim his 11th French Open trophy and 17th major title.

Nadal told reporters after the victory that he wants to ensure that his body recovers sufficiently from playing on clay in Paris.

“I would love to be playing in as many places as possible, but you understand I need to check how I feel in the next couple of days,” Nadal said.

“Of course it’s a drastic change from clay to grass. I did it in the past when I was much younger, quicker, because I played back to back.”

After the Australian Open in January, Nadal sat out for more than two months due to a hip injury. The Spaniard pulled out of the Melbourne tournament in the quarter-finals because of this.

Nadal was asked after Sunday’s win if he soon hopes to surpass Roger Federer’s record 20 Grand Slam titles, but the Spaniard said this was not his main concern at the moment.

“You can’t be frustrated if somebody has more money than you, if somebody has a bigger house than you, if somebody has more Grand Slams than you,” said Nadal, who will be top seed at Wimbledon.

“I’ve never been crazy about this kind of stuff. You can’t live with that feeling. You have to do your way. I’d love to have 20 like Roger in the future or more, but it is not something in my mind. I know I’ve had an amazing career so I want to keep fighting for these things.”

Wimbledon is set to start on July 2. Nadal will be seeking his ninth championship there.

German tennis star Philipp Kolschreiber won his third ATP Tournament in Munich Sunday after defeating Austrian Dominic Thiem in the finals, and was promptly presented with a pair of traditional leather Bavarian pants or lederhosen as part of his prize.

Kohlshreiber, 32, previously won the 2007 and 2012 titles. The Augsburg, Bavaria, native ran out the 7-6 (9/7), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) winner after a huge battle in the final which lasted just under two and a half hours.

“This is a great tournament and has been something of a lucky charm for me,” said Kohlschreiber, who collected 82,450 euros in prize money, a new sports car, and a luxury pair of lederhosen.

After losing the first set on a tie-breaker, Thiem, 22, rallied to win the second, breaking Kohlschreiber to go 4-3 up as the set then followed serve.

The German squandered two match points at 5-4 up in the third before Thiem broke back to take the game to a second tie-breaker.

“Unbelievable. Great story the whole week. Great performance. Huge final,” Kohlschreiber said. “I’m very happy and pleased with my performance.”

He also stated that he believes his opponent has a shot at winning the tournament someday. “Dominic made life very difficult for me today,” Kohlschreiber added. “My time here is coming to an end and he will win the tournament sometime.”

Kolschreiber has now won seven ATP titles in his career. He lost to Scotland’s Andy Murray in last year’s Munich final.

Thiem, the world No. 15, has already racked up 26 victories and two titles this season.

Kolschreiber, ranked 27th in the world, earned his way to his fifth Munich final after seeing off compatriot Florian Mayer, Argentine Juan Martin del Potro and Italian Fabio Fognini en route.

The win improves the Augsburg native to 2-0 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry against Thiem, who was playing in his seventh career final.

“It was a very close final, attractive for the crowd, for sure. It was very painful for me but Philipp was the better player today, and he deserves to win,” Thiem said. “Almost every final is close because both players never give up. They want to win the title. I’ve won the last five finals… now I’ve lost one. It’s no tragedy, especially against Philipp.”
