Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon will return to the injured list, where he began the season, after suffering from a hamstring strain in his most recent start against the Astros Sunday. The Yankees signed Rodon to a six-year, $162 million contract in the offseason.

After several mediocre starts following his return in July, Rodon’s first two starts in August were similarly poor. After the former White Sox and Giants ace allowed five runs in 2.2 innings against Houston, the Yankees elected to place him on the 15-day injured list instead of risking further injury. Rodon reportedly wanted to play through the pain.

“There was some debate — and he certainly wants to pitch, he does not want to go on the IL, feels like he can pitch through this,” manager Aaron Boone said before New York’s game Monday. “But we just felt like if it was going to be six or seven days, and with the nature of the injury, especially as he’s been through some things this year trying to get going, didn’t want to put him out there in a compromising situation.”

In six starts this season, Rodon has earned a 1-4 record and 7.33 ERA, far removed from his All-Star seasons in Chicago and San Francisco in 2021 and 2022, respectively. His absence and subsequent lack of production have been one of many reasons behind the Yankees’ 2023 skid. The team is currently in last place in the AL East and 5.5 games back in the Wild Card standings.

Rodon has not been the only Yankees starter affected by setbacks, as much of the rotation has missed time at some point. Nestor Cortes, a revelation for the team last year when he proved to be a highly effective No. 2 starter, just recently returned from injury.

Domingo German, who pitched a perfect game against the Athletics last month, recently left the team in order to receive treatment for alcohol abuse. Gerrit Cole has been consistent and effective as the team’s ace and has been one of the best in baseball, but these efforts have not been enough to solve serious issues throughout the rest of the roster.

Rodon could return later this month, pending approval from the team’s management and medical personnel.

New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German entered an inpatient treatment facility for alcohol abuse Wednesday. The organization said that he is on the restricted list and will not pitch for the team again this season.

Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said that German will receive respect and privacy from the team as he seeks help.

“Certainly it’s a very serious issue that affects way too many people, unfortunately, and hopefully the steps that are being taken today will really benefit him for the remaining part of his life because it’s a very serious problem that you need to address head-on and these treatment places are significant steps hopefully to helping him get the tools to solve it,” Cashman said.

German made headlines last month after throwing a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics, the 24th in MLB history. Beyond that triumphant night, however, he was struggling in 2023, earning a 5-7 record and 4.56 ERA.

Alcohol use was allegedly a major aspect of German’s 2019 domestic violence scandal when he slapped his girlfriend at a social gathering with Yankees teammates. After returning home that night, his girlfriend locked herself in a room and called one of German’s teammates’ wives for assistance, claiming that he was intoxicated and belligerent.

“It just affects you as a human being,” fellow Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole said after the team’s game Wednesday night. “You care about your teammates. You care about your teammates’ families. So it’s a sad situation and you want the best for Domingo.”

Since joining the Yankees in 2017, German has shown flashes of brilliance on the mound, compiling an 18-4 record in 2019, but has also struggled with poor play and injuries. Nestor Cortes, the team’s rising star last season, will soon return from injury to replace German in the rotation.

“Domingo Germán has certainly been a part of the Yankee family and he’s dealing with a very serious issue and I certainly think we’re all going to keep him in our prayers as he takes very important but necessary steps in trying to deal with this problem,” Cashman said.

New York Yankees pitcher Jimmy Cordero was served a 76-game ban last week due to violating the domestic violence policy, keeping him out for the entire regular season and the playoffs.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced that the 31-year-old is suspended due to not adhering to the MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. Cordero agreed to the length of the ban, as it is one of the longer bans given. It is still fewer than Trevor Bauer‘s, Sam Dyson‘s (162), Jose Torres‘s (100), and Hector Olivera‘s (82). Bauer was suspended 324 games, but it was reduced on appeal to 194.

The right-hand reliever told a few teammates, including Aaron Judge, before the suspension became public as the captain of the Yankees reacted to the news.

“We’re upset,’’ Judge said. “I’m happy the league is doing things to control this, with suspensions. … I know a lot of guys on this team are upset.”

Asked if he would “welcome” Cordero back to the team once the suspension is over, Judge said, “I think that’s a ways away. I’m not sure. I’ll have a better answer for you when the season’s over,” and followed up with “I’ve got his family on my mind. Hopefully, he learns and can use resources to get help.”

Teams are not made aware of the details of the incidents leading to suspensions unless the team is involved, according to the league policy on domestic violence-type cases.

Aaron Boone, manager of the Yankees, said the organization was aware of the investigation for about a week and that Cordero came to him and told him of the situation earlier in the week. He described the conversation as “a little vague and all over [the place]. Just that an investigation was going on.”

“When things like this that are about as serious as it gets come up, there’s a heavy price to be paid,” Boone said. “And certainly I support that, I know the organization supports that. And hopefully, now it turns to genuine healing.”

Boone said he found out about Cordero’s suspension following the Yankees’ game last Tuesday, as he addressed the situation to the team before their game against the Baltimore Orioles last Wednesday.

“My biggest thing right now is having a feeling for the situation and hoping and praying something good comes out of this,” Boone said. “That there’s maturity, learning [and] healing in whatever is going on. Baseball, we’ll deal with that. This is real life and a much more serious situation.”

The team said in a statement, “The Yankees are fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action applied to Jimmy Cordero. There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards, and enforcement of MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.”

Cordero played in 31 games with the Yankees this year and had a WHIP of 1.07 in 32 ²/₃ innings, as he last pitched last Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals and was active the game after. Pitcher Randy Vasquez then filled his roster spot once it was announced that the reliever was out for the year due to suspension.

During his ban, Cordero will not be paid his $720,000 salary, as he is the latest Yankee to be suspended under the league’s domestic violence protocol. New York will have to replace his services quickly, as the 31-year-old pitcher was part of a solid bullpen, one of the better ones in the majors.

Before the 2022 season, the Yankees brought him in on a minor league deal, and spent last year with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

This isn’t anything new for the Yankees however, as they have had a history of dealing with these domestic violence cases with their players. Domingo German threw the 24th perfect game two weeks ago against the Oakland Athletics but has a history of suspensions, including an 81-game ban he served back in 2019 that trailed into the 2020 season.

Back in 2016, while he was being investigated under the same policy, the Yankees targeted Cincinnati Reds’ pitcher Aroldis Chapman, now with the Texas Rangers, via trade, as he was suspended for only 30 games.

New York will have to rely on a pitcher rotation consisting of German, Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Severino, and Carlos Rodón. Sitting at 49-42 but ranked fourth in the AL East, the Yankees will need to turn around their season fast in the next few games for any chance at a postseason run.

Though Yankees fans who stayed up to watch the West Coast game were overjoyed with the result, the nationwide reaction to German’s perfect game was mixed, though it was the first of its kind since 2012. The source of this lukewarm reception from some was twofold, for the most part.

The response in the context of MLB competition was fairly straightforward. The Oakland Athletics have been adopted by many as a darling pick for the season as fans in the city fight desperately to keep their team while owner John Fisher continues his march to Las Vegas. The team is on pace to have the worst record in franchise history and is arguably one of the worst teams of the modern era. To some, German’s perfect game felt like adding insult to injury.

A more nuanced response came as a result of events off the field. On one hand, several outlets reported that German dedicated his performance to his uncle, who passed away several days before the game. Even this news, however, was met with a seemingly constant stream of serious complaints and distasteful jokes about German’s 2019 domestic abuse scandal.

In September that year, German slapped his girlfriend at an event with several of his Yankees teammates and their partners present. Later on in the night, German abused her again while intoxicated at their home until she escaped to a locked room. She called the wife of one of German’s teammates, and the pair arrived at the scene to calm German down and tend to her. Though no one ever contacted law enforcement, someone did report the incident to MLB, which suspended German for 81 games in January 2020.

While the history of German’s achievement Wednesday was self-evident, it was inextricably tied to memories of his abuse for many fans, who were either candidly or facetiously vocal on social media in expressing that it soured positive feelings for the perfect game.

Very little of this appeared anywhere near mainstream coverage of the event. In a recurring gap between sports media and the world around it, breaking news writers and broadcast analysts failed to capture the feelings of the audience they were serving. In stark contrast to the blandly triumphant headlines and post-game coverage, the immediate public response to German’s perfect game assumed a wildly varied, often critical tone.

Fans rooting for the winning team had an easier time of it. Fans rooting for the losers sank to new depths. Some found a way to root for the achievement itself. Some couldn’t bring themselves to root for the man. Reactions are individual and can rarely be summarized concisely, but one thing was clear. This perfect game meant more to people than 27 consecutive outs.

New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German will not appeal his 10-game suspension ruling for using a foreign substance during a game against the Blue Jays Tuesday. German denies using a foreign substance but does not intend to go through MLB’s hearing process.

The Yankees pitcher was ejected before the start of the fourth inning when umpire D.J. Reyburn objected to the substance on his hands during a routine check.

“The umpire from first base (Reyburn) was the one that was pressing on my hand. He felt like it was too much, and he called over the other umpires to verify,” Germán said through a translator. “I didn’t get a clear explanation at the moment. And then it ended up throwing me out of the game.”

German also claimed that a brown substance on his pants was chewing tobacco. As for the substance on German’s hands, crew chief James Hoye told reporters that it was the stickiest he had ever felt. He also claimed that it could not have been rosin.

“They felt it was too sticky and they ran him,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game. “Obviously it’s not ok. But also we’re talking, what is the line? So it’s difficult. And obviously, it raised to a level — and of course, he’s been in the crosshairs a bit – but it was raised to a level that they didn’t feel was good. And ultimately, that’s Domingo’s responsibility we’re in a better position there.”

German becomes the fourth pitcher in 2023 to be suspended for using an illegal substance. New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer was the last to be disciplined on April 20, despite the fact that he adamantly claimed that he was merely using rosin and sweat.

Since MLB announced that it would be cracking down on pitcher’s substances more, many players have complained that the new policies are impossible to enforce consistently.

“My office has completed its investigation into the allegations that Domingo German violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy,” Manfred said. “Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. German violated our Policy and that discipline is appropriate.”

The Dominican-born pitcher allegedly had an altercation of sorts with his girlfriend Mara Vega, and although no police report was filed, the league chose to investigate the claims of domestic abuse.

“This is a bigger issue, obviously,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “When you hear the words ‘domestic violence,’ it’s one of the things that stops you in your tracks.”

This ban is the longest levied ban by the MLB for a player who was not formally charged. Chicago’s Addison Russell was suspended 40 games in 2018-2019 for allegations by his ex-wife.

Jose Torres, former San Diego pitcher received 100 games in 2018, however after an arrest on domestic violence charges.
