One of the greatest boxers to fight in the ring, Pernell Whitaker, was hit by a car in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was killed. The 55-year-old southpaw is remarked as one of the best boxers in history.

According to FOX News, the driver stayed at the scene, saying they didn’t see Whitaker when he was walking on the street.

“I guess he was wearing dark clothes, the road was dark and the driver didn’t see him,”  Devon Whitaker, son of Pernell, told the Virginian-Pilot. “That all I can say about him, I can’t really say how I’m feeling because I’m feeling shocked. I’m still trying to process everything that’s going on. But he was a cool guy.”

Police received an emergency call late on Sunday night, when officers located the man who was hit by the vehicle, he was found dead at the scene.

“When officers arrived on scene they located an adult male victim who had been hit by a vehicle. The victim succumbed to his injuries on the scene,” said L.M. Bauder, the Virginia Beach Police Department spokesman, according to ESPN.”The driver of the vehicle remained on scene with police.”

Whitaker was placed in the Boxing Hall of Fame 13 years ago, and was known for winning world titles in four different weight classes. He thrived in the late 80s and early 90s, winning a lightweight world championship, one junior welterweight and welterweight championship, and a junior middleweight championship. He was regarded as one of the best defensive boxers of his generation, tiring out opponents and constantly making them miss.

“I loved PW and he loved me — there was no doubt,” Kathy Duva, the Main Events promoter who was in charge of promoting Whitaker through the entirety of his career, said according to ESPN. “He was this person who was only comfortable in the ring. He had demons but when he was in the ring that was when he was in control and when he was happy and when he was the very best at what he did, and he wanted to show that to everybody.”

Cliff Dixon, a close friend of Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant, was shot and killed early Thursday morning. Chamblee, Georgia Police spokesperson Michael Beller reported that Dixon was at the SL Lounge celebrating his 32nd birthday. He added that he had arrived just before the incident. First responders aided the former Western Kentucky University basketball player but he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. He had posted on Instagram the day before about the celebration.

The suspect fled the scene but Chamblee Police investigators are “actively working the case and following up on all available leads.”

Dixon transferred to WKU from a junior college before the 2009-2010 season. Expectations were high for the Maryland native, but he was dismissed from the team for violating its rules during the 2010-2011 season. Dixon went out of the country to play professionally, joining teams in Mexico, Austria and Brazil.

After news of his death broke, WKU tweeted out: “We’re sending our condolences today to the family, friends and loved ones of former Hilltopper forward Cliff Dixon (2009-11), who passed away early this morning.”

Durant often referred to Dixon as his “adopted brother.” During his famed acceptance speech for his 2013-2014 MVP award, KD thanked Dixon as well as his mother.

Dixon was described as a Durant’s “adopted brother” and someone who his mother, Wanda Pratt, “took in” at the age of 16. She mourned his death on Thursday, tweeting: “The Durant family extends our deepest condolences & prayers to Cliff’s mother, siblings, family & friends. Our family was an extension of his & we shared wonderful memories. His transition is an incredible loss for all of us who loved him, he will be missed dearly #CliffDixon RIP.”

Durant has yet to comment on Dixon’s passing. On Thursday night, he scored 15 points in a win over the Indiana Pacers. Before the game Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he hoped Durant would be helped by being on the court. I think for most of us who play this game or coach this game, this is kind of our refuge. Being able to play, being able to immerse yourself in a game. Kind of the best way to deal with something that’s tragic, something difficult. I know Durant will be playing with a heavy heart tonight, and I hope he can lose himself in the game and find some joy in the game itself.”

Below is Durant’s MVP speech:

Hall Of Famer Frank Robinson, The Black Manager In The MLB, Dies At 83

Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Robinson died at the age of 83. Throughout his playing career, he notched 14 all-star nominations and became the first and only player to win the MVP in both the American and National league. He would later become the first black manager in the MLB, leading teams in both leagues from the dugout as well.

“Frank Robinson’s resume in our game is without parallel, a trailblazer in every sense, whose impact spanned generations,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “He was one of the greatest players in the history of our game, but that was just the beginning of a multifaceted baseball career.”

Robinson reached the majors with the Cincinnati Reds in 1956. The Reds had only signed a black player two years prior and Jackie Robinson was still in the last year of his career. However, Frank had the most dominant rookie season ever at the time, hitting a then-rookie record 39 homers and getting an all-star nod. At 25, he won his first MVP and led the team to the pennant. However, in 1966 Cincinnati would ship him off to the Baltimore Orioles, figuring that the 30-year-old wouldn’t replicate the 33 homers and .296 average he had done the last season. Instead, he proved the Reds wrong. Though he only led the league in average, homers and runs batted in once each, he did it all in the 1966 season. If not for Carl Yastrzemski hitting for the triple crown the next year, Robinson would’ve been remembered as the last ballplayer in 46 years to achieve the feat. Regardless, he won his second MVP and the first of two World Series titles that year. Both were feats Yastrzemski would never achieve.

“Frank took us from being a good team in 1965 to being a great team in 1966,” Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer told the Baltimore Sun. “I’m glad Cincinnati thought he was ‘an old 30’ when they traded him.”

Robinson was named player-manager of the Cleveland Indians in 1975, becoming the first black manager in Baseball. He would also manage the San Francisco Giants and the Washington Nationals before retiring. Born in Beaumont, Texas, Robinson was raised in West Oakland, California. He attended McClymonds High School along with future NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell.

The Robinson family has asked that instead of flowers contributions in Robinson’s memory can be made to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennesse or the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington, D.C.
