Frances Tiafoe is now undefeated at 10-0 on the Billie Jean King Tennis Center’s second-biggest court, Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The American lives for the US Open, and it showed again last night as he stormed past former champion and world number one Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev, who has struggled a bit as of late, is still a top player on the hard court surface, making this Tiafoe’s most impressive win at this year’s tournament.

The first set saw both players trading a ton of break points, with Tiafoe eventually winning the tiebreak 7-1.

The crowd was behind him the entire night, with a massive sound pop at the end of the second set when Tiafoe took that set 6-4.

To Medvedev’s credit, he did not play that poorly; Tiafoe’s level was incredible, and the match was much closer than the scoreline suggested. Tiafoe just played the big points better, and exemplified that by saving set points in the third-set tiebreak and eventually finishing the match there.

Tiafoe is a huge fan favorite, but he will face another American next round. Young rising talent Alex Michelsen has been on the run of his life and is the only player in the tournament to this point that hasn’t lost a set in the men’s draw.

Michelsen will be a tough out for Tiafoe, who will still be the slight favorite. Unfortunately, the winner of that will have a huge task ahead of them, either taking on defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or big-serving lefty Ben Shelton.

Shelton, Michelsen, and Tiafoe are all trying to end a historic 23-year drought since the last time an American man has won a Grand Slam. Andy Roddick won the 2003 US Open, and since then, plenty of hopefuls have come along, but nobody has done it.

These three players, along with another young star in Learner Tien, are the next generation of American men and are all in a close race for the American top rank throughout the year.

Unfortunately, Tiafoe won’t get to play on Louis Armstrong Stadium for his quarterfinal match against Michelsen. That match will take the big stage on the main court, Arthur Ashe Stadium, at no earlier than 1:00 p.m. EST.

Tennis player Daniil Medvedev had a meltdown during the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Medvedev had a brutal day. He failed to win a single game across two sets, losing 6-0 in both. In tennis, this is known as a “double bagel.”

Medvedev was obviously frustrated with his poor performance. He slammed his racket on the ground seven times before breaking it and throwing it in the trash.

An unsportsmanlike conduct code violation was called. Medvedev will likely be fined for his outburst.

Medvedev is the No. 10 tennis player in the world. A day like this for him is uncommon. Although he’s from Russia, he currently does not represent a country due to Russia being banned from many athletic events after the invasion of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, his opponent, Matteo Berrettini of Italy, had one of the best days of his career. Berrettini was the No. 90 tennis player heading into the match. Although this is still respectable, he was a clear underdog against Medvedev.

Berrettini was the fifth player to defeat a top-10 player in a double bagel. The Association of Tennis Professionals first started making rankings in 1973.

This was Berrettini’s first double bagel win at the tour level. Berrettini immediately realized the historic nature of his performance.

“I think it was definitely one of the best performances of my life,” Berrettini said afterward in his on-court interview. “I think I missed three shots in the whole match, and it’s not easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons were working pretty well.”

This win advanced Berrettini to the round of 16 in the Monte-Carlo Masters. He defeated Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in the round of 64.

The round-of-16 match will be on April 9 at 5 a.m. EDT.

The U.S. Open handed Daniil Medvedev a $42,500 fine following his outrage at chair umpire Greg Allensworth in the first round.

The tournament fined the 29-year-old Russian $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $12,500 for racket abuse.

The argument caused the match against Benjamin Bonzi to be halted for several minutes at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. During the third set of the match, Bonzi had the match point but missed his first serve. However, the umpire gave the Frenchman another chance after a photographer stepped onto the court.

Medvedev did not like the decision and began protesting with Allensworth.

“Are you a man? Are you a man?” Medvedev said to the umpire. “Why are you shaking?”

The 2021 U.S. Open champion continued to rally up the crowd as he argued with Allensworth.

“He wants to go home, guys, he doesn’t like it here,” he said. “He gets paid by the match, not by the hour.”

After the chaotic episode, Medvedev rallied to force a fourth and fifth set. Bonzi ultimately won the match and advanced to the next round. After the loss, Medvedev smashed his racket in frustration.

U.S. Open security escorted the photographer and revoked his credentials, the United States Tennis Association said.

Sunday’s first-round exit adds to Medvedev’s struggles in 2025. The Russian collected just one win in four Grand Slams this year, progressing to the second round just once. Bonzi got the better of Medvedev in the first round of a Grand Slam at Wimbledon. Medvedev got eliminated once again in the first round, this time to Cameron Norrie at Wimbledon.

Bonzi advanced and beat Marcos Giron in the following round.

The U.S. Open descended into chaos on Sunday when a photographer came onto the court during the match between Daniil Medvedev and Benjamin Bonzi, leading to an almost six-minute delay due to Medvedev’s outburst.

While Bonzi was preparing to play his second serve, a photographer walked onto the court. The interruption led the chair umpire, Greg Allensworth, to call time.

Allensworth instructed the photographer to leave the court and return Bonzi to first serve, citing the delay. The decision sparked an emotional outburst from Medvedev at Louis Armstrong Stadium as he went to confront the chair umpire.

“Are you a man? Are you a man? Why are you shaking?” Medvedev said as he approached the chair. “He wants to go home, guys. He doesn’t like it here. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour.”

The crowd continued to boo for another six minutes and refused to stay quiet so Bonzi could serve. The crowd chanted “second serve.”

Medvedev fended off the match point and rallied enough to send the match to a fifth set.

A U.S. Tennis Association spokesperson said the photographer was removed from the court by security and his credentials were revoked.

In a press conference after the match, Medvedev explained that his reaction was due to Allensworth’s decision, not the photographer’s.

“I was not upset with the photographer,” Medvedev said. “Every time there’s a sound from the stands between serves, there is never a second serve. But, well, that helped me get back into the match. It was a fun moment to live.”

Medvedev continued that he did not believe he was responsible for the crowd’s reaction, which contributed to the six-minute delay.

Bonzi said Medvedev’s behavior crossed a line during his post-match press conference.

“It was not my call to say first serve,” Bonzi said. “Daniil started it. He put oil on the fire.”

Bonzi prevailed despite the dramatic events, securing a 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4 victory.

Down two sets and facing triple break point—not to mention his diminishing prospects of winning a record 21st Grand Slam title—Rafael Nadal battled back.

A notorious competitor, Nadal dug deep and won the next four points to survive Daniil Medvedev. Moments later he held for 3-3 in the third set and grabbed the momentum of the Australian Open final.

Call him Black Jack, because Nadal did get to 21—setting the record for Grand Slam singles titles with an improbable 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 comeback win that went on for five hours and 24 minutes.

The 35-year-old currently has one more major than Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic—the “Big Three.” The former is injured and the latter wasn’t able to participate, if you hadn’t heard. Though neither played, they both were watching and chiming in on social media.

“I was repeating to myself during the whole match, ‘I lost a lot of times here having chances, sometimes I was a little bit unlucky,’” Nadal said. “I just wanted to keep believing until the end.

“Tonight has been unforgettable. I feel very lucky.”

He said, all things considered, “the scenario, the momentum, without a doubt probably the biggest comeback of my tennis career … The most unexpected. And most surprising, I think, for everyone.”

There was plenty of drama in the final that started Sunday night, was delayed in the second set when an activist jumped onto the court, and finished to 1:15 a.m.

“Should have done better; should have hit a winner,” Medvedev said. “Maybe would have won the match.

“Tactically nothing changed, but Rafa stepped up.”

“Good evening. No, good morning!” Nadal joked.

It was the second-longest Australian Open final ever, as Nadal’s loss to Djokovic a decade ago was 5:53.

Nadal won despite competing in only two matches in the second half of 2021 as he was sidelined with a foot injury and overcame COVID-19. His first Australian Open title came in 2009, before he lost four other finals there. He’s now 21-8 in major finals.

“For me, it’s just amazing,” he said. “[Six weeks ago] I didn’t know if I’d be able to play on the tour again.”

Medvedev was aiming to be the first man in the Open era to win his first two Grand Slam titles back-to-back. He lost the 2021 final in Melbourne to Djokovic.

“From now on, I’m playing for myself,” Medvedev said. “For my family. To provide [for] my family, for people that trust in me. Of course, for all the Russians, because I feel a lot of support there.”

“I want to congratulate Rafa,” he said. “What he did today was amazing. You’re an amazing champion.”
