The Dallas Cowboys have waived quarterback Joe Milton III, as the team announced Sam Howell as the backup quarterback to Dak Prescott.

Milton spent the past season as the backup to Prescott, where he impressed many in the preseason, completing 29 out of 43 passes for 378 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Milton was cut to make a roster spot for recently acquired Emari Demercado.

The Cowboys looked to trade Milton before the 53-man roster cuts, but couldn’t find the right deal. If Milton clears waivers, the Cowboys could bring him back to the practice squad.

The Cowboys signed Demercado before waiving Milton, leaving some to believe the competition was still ongoing. Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer said the competition between Milton and Howell would continue. 

“We’re still piecing the puzzle together, and that’s where this thing is very fluid,” Schottenheimer said. 

Howell signed a one-year deal worth $2.5 million guaranteed as a free agent. He showcased his skills in the preseason, completing 27 of 40 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also recorded a rushing touchdown as well. 

Compared to Milton, Howell has spent time as a starter, with 18 career starts during his tenure with the Washington Commanders in 2022 and 2023. Milton has appeared in five games, but none as the starter.

The Cowboys chose experience for this QB2 battle. Milton has not yet signed with a new team but may find a new home in the coming weeks.

The Cowboys had a roller coaster season. The last season kicked off hot, with a dominant performance from Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb in a win over the Browns. In week four, superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons got injured and missed most of the season. Later in the season, Dallas got smacked by the Lions 47-9 at home. Finally, Prescott got wounded in week nine, which caused him to miss the rest of the season. The Cowboys would end up finishing 7-10 after winning their division in 2023 before the playoff collapse.

In 2024, the Cowboys’ defense struggled to stop the run, while the offensive line continued to decline. These were areas they knew they needed to address in the offseason. The Cowboys brought in a ton of new players, including guard Robert Jones, middle linebackers Jack Sanborn and Kenneth Murray. They also signed defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, wide receiver Paris Campbell, running backs Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. Dallas also made a considerable move, not re-signing former head coach Mike McCarthy and instead promoting their offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer.

With all of the Cowboys’ additions, they also lost many key players, like offensive lineman Zack Martin, who retired after having a Hall of Fame career with the Cowboys. They also lost defensive lineman DeMarcus Lawrence, running back Rico Dowdle, wide receiver Brandin Cooks and cornerback Jourdan Lewis. The team lost significant pieces but made one final move to bring some more juice to the offense, trading for wide receiver George Pickens from the Steelers. Pairing Pickens with Lamb creates one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL for the Cowboys next season, giving their fans something to look forward to.

The Cowboys will have their work cut out for them, having the fifth-hardest schedule in the NFL according to Fox Sports. The Cowboys get to play in the first game of the NFL regular season vs the defending Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, in a huge divisional matchup. The Cowboys also play seven other playoff teams from last season, including playing the Eagles and Commanders twice. Prescott will have to return to MVP-caliber play if the Cowboys want to return to the playoffs in 2025.

The highest 2025 salary cap figure in the NFL no longer belongs to Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

The Cowboys have restructured Prescott’s contract, freeing up $36.6 million in cap space. They converted $45.75 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, lowering his cap hit from $89.89 million to $53.29 million.

Dallas has cleared $56.6 million in cap space over the past two days by restructuring the contracts of Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re preparing for a big free-agency splash next week.

“I’m not looking at free agency as a place to fill voids,” Jerry Jones, the man at the helm as Cowboys owner and general manager, said.

That does not mean that Dallas has a complete roster.

“Not if you include what might work for us in the draft and what we’re doing with our own roster relative to who we want to sign,” Jones added.

The recent contract restructures won’t impact negotiations for pass rusher Micah Parsons, who is currently slated to play the 2025 season under his $22.06 million fifth-year option. A long-term extension would reduce that cap hit and open up more space.

Dallas has recently begun talks with Parsons’ agent regarding an extension.

Jones isn’t overly focused on when a deal gets finalized. The Cowboys took a similar approach last year, signing Lamb late in training camp and extending Prescott just before the season began.

“We get criticized because we wait until the end or what you would call the end, and that is lining up for the first game,” Jones said. “It just happens that way. I’ve been one of the earliest out there on several contracts in my 35 years.”

On Tuesday, the Cowboys signed defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa to a four-year, $80 million contract, guaranteeing him $52 million and setting his 2025 cap hit at $6.25 million.

Stephen Jones, the team’s executive vice president, said the Cowboys will take a “selectively aggressive” approach to free agency this year – unlike last offseason, when they parted ways with Tyron Smith, Tony Pollard, Tyler Biadasz, Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler and Johnathan Hankins, without making substantial additions.

“As opportunity would come up from [outside], not the draft, not from within, as the opportunity comes up, we’ll weigh it,” Jones said. “Last year, we would have waited, but we’ll look and see the opportunity to improve on the plan that basically both defense and offense is to complement what we’re wanting to do with a Dak-led team.”

With free agency approaching next week, the Cowboys have several pending free agents they hope to retain, including Jourdan Lewis, Bryan Anger, Rico Dowdle, Eric Kendricks and DeMarcus Lawrence.

If Lawrence departs and with Zack Martin retiring, Prescott – the Cowboys’ fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft – would become the longest-tenured player on the team.

Prescott’s reduced 2025 cap hit means his 2026 cap number will rise by $9.15 million to $76.8 million.

Another year of playoff failure emerged as the Cowboys were one-and-done in 2023, losing to the Green Bay Packers 48-32. Despite the early postseason exit, Dallas won the NFC East for the second time in three seasons with a 12-5 record.

2023 also saw the Cowboys dominate defensively, allowing under 300 yards a game on average while giving up 36 touchdowns during the regular season – the same can be said for the offense, as they averaged 371.6 yards and scored 57 touchdowns. Dallas outscored the rival Giants 89-17 and the Commanders 83-20 in their annual meetings.

Defensive coordinator Dann Quinn left Dallas to become the Commanders’ head coach – former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer was hired to take over for Quinn. Linebacker Leighton Vander Esch retired after six seasons due to medical reasons. Vander Esch started 65 games during his tenure and recorded 469 tackles combined while getting 3.5 sacks.

Star offensive tackle Tyron Smith departed for the New York Jets, Tony Pollard went to Tennessee, and Michael Gallup signed with the Raiders. Ezekiel Elliot returns to Dallas after spending 2023 with the Patriots, in addition to Eric Kendricks and Royce Freeman joining the squad.

At 29, the Cowboys selected Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton since Smith left, and the other options are just as inexperienced. It’ll be quite an ask for Guyton, as the Cowboys hope he’ll fill the former all-pro’s shoes. As Dante Fowler Jr. and Dorance Armstrong exited, it made sense for Marshawn Kneeland to get picked in round two. Armstrong gets the opportunity to learn from Demarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons to build on pass-rushing skills.

Dallas’s 2024 schedule is tied for the NFL’s 12th most brutal. 

The Cowboys will play the Giants on Thanksgiving Day at AT&T Stadium and on Thursday night in week four. Eight other prime-time games are scheduled: the Ravens, Steelers, Lions, 49ers, Eagles, Texans and Bengals.

The offensive line will take a massive hit after Smith’s departure, though Zack Martin is present. Dak Prescott would need to play at an elite level, as there’s pressure for the Cowboys to compete for the NFC East with the Eagles.

The Dallas Cowboys have been in the news the entire NFL off-season, mainly focused on their lack of moves in free agency or not signing contract extensions for their two stars, quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Ceedee Lamb, to contract extensions.

Early in the week, Cowboys owner/GM/president Jerry Jones went on a tirade explaining why he should be the team’s general manager for the foreseeable future. All quotes are from DLLS in Dallas:

“I’ve done it all. So I have an ordinate amount of confidence that f—, if anybody can figure out how to get this s— done, I can figure out how to get it done,” Jones said. “I’ve been there every which way from Sunday, and have I busted my ass a bunch, a bunch. And there’s nobody living that’s out cutting and shooting that can’t give you a bunch of times they busted their ass. So hell no, there’s nobody that could f—— come in here and do all the contracts … and be a GM any better than I can.”

“The reason I don’t let somebody else be the GM is because I don’t have anybody that I will let do it to actually do it right. And they’re gonna have to come to me and because I know where it is that you’re going to pay for it.”

After ranting, Jones went to work, signing Lamb to a four-year $136 million extension on Monday, just four million less than the amount of Minnesota Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson. Lamb went to Twitter multiple times to express his frustration with the negotiations. Still, his patience paid off, and he will be in a Cowboys uniform for their opening game against the Cleveland Browns.

All eyes turn to Prescott as he enters the 2024 season in the last year of his deal. The quarterback hopes to be paid in line with the other top signal callers, who make over $50 million a year.

The hits keep coming to the Dallas Cowboys.

Defensive end Sam Williams tore his ACL during training camp practice, ruling him out for the season before it began. The 25-year-old, picked number 56 in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, played his college ball at Ole Miss. Last season, he finished with 26 tackles and 4.5 sacks in his second season as a pro.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer expected a revolving door at pass rusher opposite All-Pro Micah Parsons. With Williams out for the season, veteran edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence will need to play more snaps than initially anticipated. He had a productive 2023-24 season with 50 tackles and four sacks. However, the Cowboys wanted to take more off his plate as he entered his age-32 season in 2024, and that will not be possible now.

One name that could emerge for Dallas is rookie Marshawn Kneeland, whom they selected in the second round. Kneeland earned All-MAC honors last season at DE while playing for Western Michigan. He spent five seasons in Kalamazoo after having just one scholarship offer out of high school. While he did not play high-level college football, Zimmer hopes that his NFL-ready body and experience could lead to a quick transition to the NFL.

America’s team has had a noisy off-season. Entering the final year of his contract, Dak Prescott did not receive an extension, adding speculation that this could be his last season in Big D. His All-Pro WR Ceedee Lamb is also sitting out of training camp until he gets a new extension. The wide receiver market exploded this off-season after Justin Jefferson’s historic deal, and Lamb also feels he deserves a record-breaking number. This could also be the final season for head coach Mike McCarthy. The Cowboys were rumored to be interested in Bill Belichick last offseason, and another early playoff exit may lead to owner Jerry Jones looking for a new voice.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is dealing with a minor foot sprain and could miss a portion of training camp later this month to recover. Prescott was seen wearing a wearing a walking boot on vacation Thursday but the team is confident that he will be available for the start of the season.

According to NFL’s Ian Rapoport, Prescott received an MRI earlier this week and described the sprain as a “minor issue.” He was in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, when reports surfaced that he was wearing the boot, likely a precautionary measure while he takes time to heal.

Prescott’s public life has been eventful in recent months. Just last week, a judge in Texas dismissed a case accusing him of sexual assault after a two-month criminal investigation failed to find evidence of wrongdoing. The quarterback still has a countersuit for extortion ongoing.

While his legal proceedings continue, Prescott is also reportedly negotiating with the Cowboys about a potential contract extension as the team considers its future. The eight-year veteran has led Dallas to the playoffs five times, but the team has not even appeared in an NFC Championship game in that span.

The Cowboys have several long-term decisions to make, as the team must also negotiate new deals with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and defensive standout Micah Parsons soon, or else risk losing them to free agency. Dallas has built a team worthy of a dynasty but has not delivered, leaving them in a position where they will have to either buy in again or sacrifice talent in the near future.

After a resurgent 2023 regular season in which he threw for 4,516 yards, Prescott had a disastrous postseason showing against the Green Bay Packers, throwing two early interceptions and arguably costing Dallas the game. His performance in high-pressure situations has long been a point of contention, but he remains one of the most dynamic passers in the league and will demand a high asking price for any potential extension.

On the basis of “insufficient evidence,” a judge in Collin County, Texas, has dismissed a lawsuit against Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott for sexual assault last week. Prescott’s countersuit and potential extortion charges against the woman are still active.

In January, two lawyers sent a letter on behalf of a woman who accused Prescott of exposing himself and later raping her in the back of a vehicle on the way to a strip club in February 2017. The woman was seeking $100 million in damages. Prescott denied the accusation in the letter and filed a lawsuit for extortion, prompting her to take legal action as well in March.

Following an investigation, Dallas police announced in May that they would not pursue criminal charges against Prescott due to a lack of evidence. Collin County Judge Angela Tucker dismissed the lawsuit for the same reason.

“Despite [the woman’s] and her legal team’s relentless efforts to extort money and damage Dak’s reputation, justice has consistently prevailed and will continue to do so,” Levi McCathern, Prescott’s attorney, said in a statement after the dismissal.

Prescott has denied the accusations in public, with his legal representatives accusing the woman of making a weak extortion attempt years after the alleged incident. Prescott’s attorney has previously said that he does not wish to profit from any potential winnings in the countersuit, and intends to donate all proceeds to charities representing sexual assault survivors.

The Cowboys quarterback, 30, is entering the final year of his current contract with the team, and could reportedly be in talks for an extension. He has denied that the investigation and lawsuit have impacted his dealings with the Cowboys or NFL.

Dallas police confirmed on Thursday that they will not pursue sexual assault charges on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott after the launch of an investigation that began in March.

The case stemmed from an alleged incident in 2017 where an unidentified woman claimed that Prescott had assaulted her in the back of an SUV in a strip club parking lot.

Prescott filed a suit seeking monetary relief in response to a letter from the woman’s attorneys, Bethel and Yoel Zehaie, who said they would “forego pursuing criminal charges, along with disclosing this information to the public, in exchange for compensating her for the mental anguish she has suffered. [The woman’s] damages are valued at $100,000,000.00.”

“I want to thank the Dallas Police Department and Dallas County District Attorneys’ office for their thorough investigation of the allegations against Dak Prescott,” Prescott’s attorney Levi McCathern stated. “As we knew they would, they found nothing in their extensive exploration of the facts that would support a criminal prosecution. We are confident that at the end of law enforcement’s investigation into the extortion case, they will find the accuser and her attorneys just as guilty as Dak is innocent.”

“As I have said from the beginning,” McCathern continued, “Dak is a great football player and an even better human. He would never assault any woman. These false accusations were brought up seven years after the alleged events for one reason and one reason only – to line the pockets of the accuser and her attorneys. Their behavior is an affront to all the true survivors of sexual assault.”

Yoel Zehaie, an attorney for the accuser, released a statement in response to the police not pursuing the charges, noting that it unfortunately “takes a while for victims to come out, and that makes it very difficult to prosecute these cases.”

“We are proceeding with our counterclaims, even though Levi McCathern is using every tactic to prevent us from going to court,” the woman’s attorneys went on, “including attempting to order the law enforcement of the Dallas Cowboys against us, i.e. Prosper [Police], to come after us.”

On Monday, the woman’s attorneys filed a notice to dismiss Prescott’s suit because it violated Texas’ anti-SLAPP statute. In an email, Zehaie said the statute prohibits many forms of retaliatory lawsuits, including ones meant to silence sexual assault victims, and the case was dismissed as a result.

Prescott can proceed with his offseason and avoid any more legal interventions.

The Dallas Cowboys declined to pick up a fifth-year option for quarterback Trey Lance, putting the former 49ers first-rounder’s future beyond the 2024 season in jeopardy. Though the Cowboys reportedly may still support Lance as a backup passer, they saved $22.4 million by declining the option to extend the player.

Drafted by San Francisco with the third overall pick in 2021, Lance spent most of his rookie season behind quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo but was named the 2022 starter in his second season. However, he played in just two games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. Brock Purdy eventually replaced him and led the team to the NFC Championship and Super Bowl in his first two seasons.

With Purdy slowly taking complete control of the starting quarterback role, the 49ers traded Lance to the Cowboys during the 2023 season. Declining his fifth-year option now is merely a formality, as Dallas is firmly behind quarterback Dak Prescott. Owner Jerry Jones said last month that Lance was trending in the right direction, but there are no plans to prepare him for the starting role in the future.

Though Lance is a victim of poor luck, he is still a contributing member of a notoriously weak 2021 draft class of quarterbacks. Of the five quarterbacks taken in the first round that year, first-overall pick Trevor Lawrence is the only one still on the team he was drafted by. Lance, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields and Mac Jones have all been traded away, showing small flashes of ability during their careers but never enough to earn sustained success.

Of that underperforming quintet, Lance is the only one who has yet to get an extended opportunity as a starting quarterback, as his only real chance in 2022 was cut extremely short by injury. If Prescott suffers a setback in the next year, Lance could get another chance if he can beat out veteran quarterback Cooper Rush for the backup position this offseason.

The Dallas Cowboys have restructured quarterback Dak Prescott‘s contract to free up an extra $4 million in cap space for the upcoming season. Prescott is yet to land an extension with Dallas, but the restructuring of his deal means that his $5 million roster bonus will turn into a singing bonus of the same amount, while also adding two additional void years to the contract. Instead of the $40 million he was expected to make, Prescott will have a salary of $29 million for the 2024 season.

Prescott was set to have a $59.4 million cap on Dallas this season, but with the restructuring, it will lowered to $54.25 million. The added void years mean that he will be paid a lower amount for the remainder of his current deal. But if Prescott isn’t signed to a team during those void years, he will stay on the Cowboy’s payroll.

If Precott isn’t signed to an extension or to a new team by 2025, $40 million of dead cap would remain for Dallas. The void years of his contract end in 2028, so at the very worst, the Cowboys will be without a total of $14 million in cap space from 2026-2028 if Prescott doesn’t receive an extension or new contract.

Prescott was signed to a four-year $160 million deal by the Cowboys in 2021, and in the 45 games he’s played since the extension he has thrown for 11,825 yards with 96 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. Playing all 17 games last season, the 30-year-old threw for the third most passing yards and the most passing touchdowns in the league by a decent margin. Along with the stats, Prescott helped lead Dallas to a 12-5 record the past three seasons but only won one of their four playoff games in that span.

Prescott is a starting-level quarterback in the league but has gone through some rough patches with the team following multiple injuries and sub-par performances in big games. The team and owner/general manager Jerry Jones in the past have expressed their desire to resign Prescott to another long-term deal, but the restructuring of his current contract means they aren’t getting the original value they expected from a player of his caliber. Prescott has also said he wants to resign with the team, and they’ll have to make a decision soon to save cap space down the road.

The $4 million freed up for Prescott’s contract might not seem like a lot in the NFL, but the money saved by the Cowboys could be crucial. Up next for Dallas is resigning wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year Micah Parsons, both of whom will be asking for large extensions for a Cowboys’ team that clearly knows they have to move some money around.

Dallas police have confirmed an investigation of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott for an alleged sexual assault case in 2017, where a woman claims Prescott assaulted her in the back of an SUV.

The complaint was filed last Wednesday, and Prescott filed a lawsuit against the woman in Collin County on Monday, claiming that the woman and her attorneys are attempting to extort him for $100 million. Police in Prosper, Texas, where Prescott lives, are now also investigating his claim of extortion.

Prescott’s attorney, Levi McCathern, questioned the woman’s timing of her complaint, given that this incident reportedly occurred seven years ago.

“Clearly, they think that this will somehow mitigate their criminal responsibility for attempting this illegal shakedown,” McCathern told ESPN. “It won’t, and it is a true disservice to the real survivors of sexual abuse.”

“We look forward to working with all law enforcement in reaching a just conclusion to this case.”

Prescott is seeking over $1 million in monetary relief, but has vowed to donate any compensation he receives to the Joyful Heart Foundation, whose mission is to “heal, educate, and empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse.”

According to the suit, Prescott received a letter from attorneys Bethel and Zehaie in January accusing him of sexually assaulting her prior to the woman pressing charges.

The letter read, “Despite the tragic events, she is willing to forego pursuing criminal charges, along with disclosing this information to the public, in exchange for compensating her for the mental anguish she has suffered. [The woman’s] damages are valued at the sum of $100,000,000.00.”

After the lawsuit was filed, Prescott and McCathern came out with a statement on Monday in response to the situation.

“Mr. Prescott – a new father to a baby girl – has great empathy for survivors of sexual assault,” attorney McCathern stated. “He fervently believes that all perpetrators of such crimes should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. To be clear, Mr. Prescott has never engaged in any nonconsensual, sexual conduct with anyone. Lies hurt. Especially, malicious lies. We will not allow the defendant and her legal team to profit from this attempt to extort millions from Mr. Prescott.”

Zehaie alleged in a statement on the same day that Prescott acknowledged that he had been with the woman on the night of her alleged sexual assault in 2017.

When asked about the allegations against Prescott on Thursday, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the case would not impact contract negotiations with the quarterback.

“We’ve visited with Dak about that [the allegations], and it’s certainly a legal matter so it’s something we can’t comment on,” Jones said.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott comes into the 2024 season on the last year of his 4-year $160 million deal he signed with the team. Expected to finish out his contract making $59.4 million next year, Prescott hopes he can resign with Dallas in the form of a more financially manageable extension.

“It helps with the team and it helps with the numbers,” Prescott said. “Everything is great. It’ll happen.”

While Prescott is confident a new deal with the Cowboys will get done, owner Jerry Jones recently said that the extension ‘isn’t a necessity.’ The 30-year-old Prescott has been with Dallas for the entirety of his career beginning in 2016, but since then the team has seen little playoff success despite finishing first or second in the division in all but one of those years. Excluding the 2020 year which saw him out with a severe ankle injury, Prescott has led the team to a 75-49 record in the regular season. The team reached the playoffs in five of those seasons, with the team losing twice in the Wild Card Round and three times losing in the Divisional Round.

As a starting level quarterback, Prescott sits a tier below the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. With the ability to put up pretty good stats on a pretty good team, Prescott and the Cowboys should have seen more success in the eyes of many fans, but that hasn’t been the case.

In 2023 Prescott threw more than 4,500 yards for 36 touchdowns and nine interceptions in what was the second best statistical season of his career as the team won the NFC East division. Despite that, the Cowboys have yet to fully give their confidence and trust into Prescott to be the face of the franchise in the form of a new contract extension. Officially there have been no direct contract negotiations between Dallas and their starting quarterback, though Jones said he had no fear this being Prescott’s last season in a Cowboy uniform.

Prescott is confident a deal can be reached, but the organization has yet to come out to give a direct answer to the question of if he will be signed to another contract. Though there has been no official contract offered yet, the two parties have until August to agree to an extension, either making it Prescott’s last year in Dallas, or just another one of many.

Though a having a starting quarterback might be the top priority for other teams around the NFL, Dallas has other star players they need to lock down before they can offer Prescott a deal similar to that of what he was already making. In the meantime, the Cowboys will do their best to renegotiate and resign wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons to long term contracts. Once the team has it’s other pieces in place, then they will try to get a deal done with Prescott.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced Wednesday that the team will not part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy has taken most of the blame for the team’s unexpected 48-32 playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round last weekend.

“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach,” Jones said in a statement. “There is great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership as our head coach.”

After a disappointing 2020 season with Dallas, McCarthy has led the Cowboys to three straight 12-5 seasons and three trips to the playoffs. Despite entering each postseason as a Super Bowl contender, however, the team has never even reached the NFC Championship game, continuing a drought for the franchise going back to 1996.

In his statement, Jones cited McCarthy’s regular season success as a reason to keep him in the organization. This conflicts with many reports which suggested that Jones would evaluate his head coach on the basis of his last game.

“Specifically, there are many layers of success that have occurred this season as a result of Mike’s approach to leading the team, both with individual players and with our team collectively. Mike has the highest regular season winning percentage of any head coach in Cowboys history and we will dedicate ourselves, in partnership with him, to translating that into reaching our postseason goals.”

Regardless of whether one is in favor or against McCarthy, it is inarguably that the Cowboys lost to the Packers after suffering a systemic failure. Quarterback Dak Prescott, an MVP candidate coming off the best season of his career, was completely ineffective in the first half, throwing two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. His stats are inflated because the team made up ground late in the game while trailing.

The defense, ranked among the very best in the league all season, allowed multiple big plays to wide-open receivers downfield. The team has also announced that defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will remain with the team if he does not accept any head coaching positions during the off-season.

Despite earning two division titles and 42 regular season wins since 2020, the Cowboys only have one playoff victory in the McCarthy era to this point.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is expected to become one of the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks. Although the contract details are yet to be confirmed, Prescott will sign the contract during the offseason.

“He’s under contract now, but we’d like to do this after the season,” Cowboy’s vice president Stephen Jones said. “Once the season is over, we will focus on that. Dak will be our quarterback.”

Prescott is also reportedly due for a roster bonus worth $5 million. With a likely potential extension going through before the deadline, it seems almost certain that a deal between the Cowboys organization and Prescott will go through.

Prescott has been the starting quarterback for the Cowboys since 2016. During this season, he has helped the Cowboys to a 9-3 record. Prescott has a 70.1% completion rate and 3,234 yards and currently leads the NFL with 26 touchdowns. His performances have earned him the talk of potentially being the NFL MVP. He hopes to lead the Cowboys to their first Superbowl in almost 30 years. 

With the potential big-money move, Prescott looks to join Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes as one of the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks.

The Dallas Cowboys unveiled a new white helmet in their Thursday Night Football game against the Tennessee Titans. Combined with their Color Rush jersey, the uniform has been referred to as the “Arctic Cowboy” look. Dallas is the only NFL team to use two alternate helmets this season after unveiling a similar uniform on Thanksgiving.

The Cowboys’ new “Arctic White” helmet is the first time the team has ever used a white face mask on a white helmet. The monochromatic look will pair with the team’s all-white Color Rush uniform, first worn by the team in 2015. The NFL’s Color Rush promotion formally ended in 2018, but the Cowboys have used the uniform many times since as an alternate.

The Titans will also wear their Color Rush uniforms, donning navy blue for their matchup with Dallas. They will enter the contest as heavy underdogs, as the team will again compete without quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who suffered an ankle injury in Week 15 against the Chargers. Backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs will start ahead of rookie Malik Willis.

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Cowboys have already clinched a spot in the playoffs and could still technically win the NFC East by winning out. The team defeated the Eagles last weekend to make this possible, but Philadelphia would also have to lose both of their remaining games, making this unlikely. Led by quarterback Dak Prescott and defensive star Micah Parsons, the Cowboys seem prepared to make a deep postseason run.

Meanwhile, with a 7-8 record, the Titans still have a chance to win the AFC South. They currently share the top spot with the Jaguars, who are favored to defeat the Houston Texans this weekend. Jacksonville and Tennessee will then face off in Week 18 in a game that will decide the division.

Cooper Rush is in line to be the Dallas Cowboys’ starting quarterback for as long as Dak Prescott remains out. 

The team confirmed Saturday that it signed the 28-year-old and elevated Will Grier to the 53-man roster. 

Rush will serve as the Cowboys’ starter, whereas Grier will be the backup. 

The move was expected as Rush practiced this week, taking first-team reps. 

“He’s as rehearsed in this offense as anybody,” head coach Mike McCarthy said this week. 

During last Sunday night’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Prescott suffered a thumb injury that required surgery. 

He is reportedly expected to miss several weeks. 

Before today’s moves, Prescott was the only QB on the roster. 

Rush has been with the Cowboys since 2017 after getting signed as an undrafted free agent. 

He appeared in five games (including one start) with the Cowboys last year, throwing for 422 yards, three touchdown passes and one interception.

In Rush’s brief appearance against the Buccaneers last Sunday, he attempted 13 passes, picking up just 64 yards. 

Grier, on the other hand, has started two games in the NFL, both of which were with the Carolina Panthers in 2019. 

The North Carolina native has thrown for just 228 yards in his career.

In addition to the Prescott injury, the Cowboys will be without wide receiver Michael Gallup, who is listed as out after practicing on a limited basis three times this week.

On Sunday, the Cowboys look to rebound against the Cincinnati Bengals, which are also coming off a week one loss.

But the Cowboys will face a tough road ahead without Prescott and will hope to stay in the playoff hunt.

The team will be playing at home tomorrow at 4:25 p.m. ET.

Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy announced Wednesday that the team would promote quarterback Cooper Rush to the main roster as a backup to Dak Prescott. Following the final round of preseason cuts, Prescott was the only quarterback on Dallas’ depth chart.

Though the Cowboys only had one quarterback on their depth chart following the preseason, it was never the team’s intention to compete in the regular season without a backup. Rush and fellow quarterback Will Grier both backed up Prescott during the preseason but temporarily moved to the practice squad while the team carried out roster shifts. As active players go on the injured reserve list, it’s likely that Grier will be called up as well at some point.

As the team’s primary backup last season, Rush, a Central Michigan University graduate and unsigned free agent in 2017, did not see significant playing time but had a number of highlights nonetheless. With Prescott out for a game against the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 21, Rush started and threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns, including a go-ahead score to Amari Cooper to give the Cowboys a 20-16 victory.

In the week following the game, McCarthy was highly complimentary of his backup and said that he had his teammates’ unconditional support.

“I was glad everybody got to see that because that’s Cooper Rush. He plays the quarterback position like a seasoned veteran,” McCarthy said.

Grier, who remains on the practice squad for now, has not made an appearance in an NFL game since the 2019 season, and will clearly serve as the team’s QB3 if he gets called to the main roster.

The pair of backups will only be necessary if Prescott goes down with an injury, but as Rush proved last year, it helps to have a serviceable backup over the course of the season.

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith is out indefinitely after suffering a torn hamstring in practice Wednesday. Smith could miss multiple months in the 2022 season, and a hesitant return date in December has been set.

Following his injury, which occurred during a running play that required him to block linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, a source told ESPN that Smith and the Cowboys waited for a second opinion before proceeding with surgery on Friday.

Without eight-time Pro Bowler Smith for most of the season, the Cowboys will now have to compensate for a massive gap in their offensive line with less than three weeks before the regular season begins. The obvious solution is to replace Smith with rookie Tyler Smith, the Cowboys’ first round pick in the 2022 Draft. But the younger Smith was already projected to start alongside his experienced counterpart and it’s unclear if he is prepared to take on the challenge of protecting quarterback Dak Prescott’s blind side in a leading role.

The Cowboys have enjoyed solid play from their offensive line for many years, helping to make Dallas one of the most offensively gifted teams in the league. Though Tyron Smith does not appear in headlines, but an eight-year, $109 million contract he signed in 2014 demonstrates his value to the team.

If Tyler Smith does not suffice as a suitable replacement, the Cowboys may have to consider outside options. They have some cap space to do so, about $20 million, but none of the options will come close to singlehandedly making up for the injury. For now, it appears to be an irreplaceable loss.

The Dallas Cowboys will begin the regular season on Sept. 11, at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The schedule will not get much easier from there, as the team will have to face three playoff teams from 2021 in the first five weeks, including the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott apologized Tuesday for his postgame comments regarding fans throwing debris at the officials after Sunday’s Super Wild Card Weekend loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

A postgame question to the signal-caller initially indicated that fans were throwing things at the team in anger, which he called “sad.” When corrected and told the objects were directed towards the officials, he said, “Credit to them then. Credit to them.”

He stood his ground at the end of the conference and didn’t attempt to put the toothpaste back in the tube—until now.

On Tuesday, he tweeted three times to his 1.4 million followers to apologize:

“I deeply regret the comments I made regarding the officials after the game on Sunday. I was caught up in the emotion of a disappointing loss and my words were uncalled for and unfair.

“I hold the NFL Officials in the highest regard and have always respected their professionalism and the difficulty of their jobs. The safety of everyone who attends a game or participates on the field of a sporting event is a very serious matter.

“That was a mistake on my behalf, and I am sorry.”

A (perhaps now former) finalist for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award, Prescott took criticism from media and the NBA Referees Association, which posted on its official Twitter account Tuesday: “The NBRA condemns the comments by Dak Prescott condoning violence against game officials. As an NFL leader, he should know better. We encourage the NFL to take action to discourage this deplorable behavior in the future.”

“That is just unfortunate,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “That is not the way I see our fans. I think we’re a class act. I think there is no place for things like that. Understand people being frustrated, but I don’t understand throwing things onto the field where people could get injured. There’s just no place for that.”
