Craig Sager, the veteran Turner Sports sideline reporter known for his colorful attire, has died after a long battle with acute myeloid leukemia, the network announced Thursday.

“Craig Sager was a beloved member of the Turner family for more than three decades and he has been a true inspiration to all of us,” Turner president David Levy said in a statement. “There will never be another Craig Sager. His incredible talent, tireless work ethic and commitment to his craft took him all over the world covering sports.

“While he will be remembered fondly for his colorful attire and the TNT sideline interviews he conducted with NBA coaches and players, it’s the determination, grace and will to live he displayed during his battle with cancer that will be his lasting impact. Our thoughts and prayers are with Craig’s wife, Stacy, and the entire Sager family during this difficult time. We will forever be Sager Strong.”

Sager was first diagnosed with leukemia in 2014, and was admitted back into the hospital late last month.

Following his initial diagnosis, Sager, who worked for Turner for more than 30 years, missed the 2014 and 2015 NBA Playoffs and part of the 2014-15 regular season, as well as the 2015 NCAA men’s tournament.

He was also recently inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Through a partnership between Sager Sports and ESPN, sager worked his very first NBA Finals game in June, sideline reporting with ESPN’s Doris Burke for Game 6 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, which the Cavaliers won.

“First of all, let me ask you a question,” LeBron James said after the game. “How in the hell do you go 30-plus years without getting a finals game? That don’t make no sense.

“But I’m happy to see you, man. Much love and respect. I’m happy I was able to witness it in front of these fans. We really appreciate you.”

Shortly after that, ESPN presented Sager with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the 2016 ESPYs.

“Whatever I might’ve imagined a terminal diagnosis would do to my spirit,” Sager said when receiving the award, “it’s summoned quite the opposite – the greatest appreciation for life itself.

“So I will never give up. And I will never give in. I will continue to keep fighting, sucking the marrow out of life, as life sucks the marrow out of me. I will live my life full of love and full of fun. It’s the only way I know how.”

Sager underwent three bone marrow transplants– the most recent via an anonymous donor in August 2016– and more than 20 chemotherapy cycles, including one that lasted for two weeks, around the clock. He’s also been hospitalized numerous times for pneumonia, among other things.

In March 2016, Sager said on HBO’s “Real Sports” that he’d been given 3-6 months to live, without treatment. However, the longtime sportscaster said he was prepared to defy the odds and fight to live much longer.

“I go, ‘Well, whatever it takes, let’s get doing it,'” Sager said. “I’m not going to be that 3-6 months. I’m going to be that five years. I think we’re going to make medical history.”

Sager also worked for CNN, handling the network’s first live remote report from the 1980 baseball playoffs. He co-anchored “CNN Sports Tonight” and anchored “College Football Scoreboard” in the 1980s.

Though he has covered several different types of events, including college football, the NFL, the World Series, the Goodwill Games, the Pan Am Games, World Cup soccer, golf, tennis, and the Winter and Summer Olympics, Sager’s true home was the NBA.

Several players and fellow broadcasters heavily supported Sager during his medical battle. Reporters began using the hashtag #SidelineForSager and dressing in colorful outfits to show their support. In April 2016, Rockets center Dwight Howard and his D12 Foundation held a blood drive to honor Sager.

After a Final Four defeat at the 2016 NCAA tournament, Syracuse coach Jim Boehim told Sager, “I’m proud of you. I’m really proud of you and what you’re doing. You’re a fighter. It’s something we should all aspire to be, and you’re setting an example that we all should be very happy to try and follow.”

Sager is survived by his wife Stacy– a former Chicago Bulls dancer– and five children from two different marriages: Kacy, Craig Jr., Krista, Riley and Ryan.

The Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs paid tribute to Craig Sager in both dress and words Tuesday, using the season opener at Oakland’s Oracle Arena to honor the popular TNT sideline reporter battling leukemia.

Both teams also paid homage to Nate Thurmond, the Hall of Fame center and long-time member of the community-relations department who died from the disease in July.

Fans arrived to discover a white T-shirt with a drawing of Sager, in colorful attire, in blue and gold on the back of every seat. Proceeds from the sales of the shirt will benefit the SagerStrong Foundation.

In addition, Warriors officials wore another T-shirt, a mix of red, yellow and orange as part of a mock jacket, shirt and tie.

“It’s good to be honoring Craig Sager with our shirts and our fans,” said Steve Kerr, a colleague of Sager at TNT before leaving to coach the Warriors. “I think you’ll like my tie as well. This night is about opening the season, getting started, but also honoring Craig and raising money for leukemia research. You guys may connect the dots. Nate Thurmond with the Warriors passed away from leukemia, so this is a night for us where we’re thinking about Craig, we’re thinking about Nate and we’re trying to do our part to help.”

Sager received the Jimmy Valvano award for perseverance at the ESPY awards last summer.

“He’s somebody who’s endured more than I can even imagine,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “All the treatment he’s gone through and it seems to go up and down and up and down. He’s high and then he’s dejected because of what’s going on with his health. He’s been through it all and he still smiles, he still jokes, he’s still got a great sense of humor, you can still talk to him about anything. He’s just an iconic and a weird and wonderful guy all at the same time, and I mean that lovingly.”

Sager won’t be working for a while, but his son provided an update on his health last week, saying his father had spent “his first night out of the hospital in 85 days!”

The Warriors also held a moment of silence for Thurmond when Team USA played China at Oracle as part of a pre-Olympic tour. Tuesday, the team played a video during a first-quarter timeout that honored the career and legacy of the popular community ambassador.

The Spurs defeated the Warriors 129-100.

The Warriors will next visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, while the Spurs will visit the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night.

WWE Superstar and actor John Cena hosted the 2016 ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, opening with a monologue filled with wisecracks and jokes about major athletes.

ESPN’s flagship awards show aired live on ABC from the Microsoft Theater in L.A.

Grammy winner Justin Timberlake, Vice President Joe Biden, Emmy winner Bryan Cranston, and former Super Bowl champion Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks were among the presenters, while beloved TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager was honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award.

The ceremony began with a somber and powerful monologue delivered by NBA players Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, who called for a stand for social change following the recent police shootings of black men.

Soon after the recent deadly shootings of Philando Castile in Dallas, Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Anthony posted an Instagram plea using an iconic June 4, 1967, photo of Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and others from what is known as the Ali Summit. That was the Cleveland news conference in which Ali’s fellow athletes flanked him to show support as he announced his refusal to fight in the Vietnam War.

“There’s NO more sitting back and being afraid of tackling and addressing political issues anymore,” he wrote in his caption. “Those days are long gone.”

The foursome then went on to denounce the violence, injustice and racial profiling that has permeated the nation.

Former President Bill Clinton took to Twitter to express how inspired he was by the basketball stars’ words, which also resonated with many others.

Cena, 39, then followed up with a hilarious and biting monologue of his own. Right off the batt, he poked fun at the NBA draft, the 2016 Rio Olympics and why he hosted, “instead of someone else like Kevin Hart.”

Cena explained that the WWE is scripted and so there’s a lot of crossover with professional sports. For example, “Cleveland won something,” he says, and adds that the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the NBA Championship must have been scripted, because there’s no way that actually happened.

The WWE star also commented on Odell Beckham Jr.’s look, Peyton Manning’s love story with the NFL, and Tim Duncan‘s retirement (“He announces it in the middle of the night in the off-season, what a diva right?”), among countless other sports stars.

Cena also blasted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, saying: “The one place the WWE has you beat, the one thing we have that you don’t: Vince McMahon. A maniacal billionaire pulling the strings behind the scenes who uses every trick in the book to manipulate things to his advantage, any way he can. That is something that is way too crazy for real sports.”

The screen behind Cena then flashed a picture of Goodell.

Cena finished by saying, “Or maybe we have more in common than you think.”

Goodell’s reputation for handling scandals in the NFL– the Deflate-gate controversy among the most recent ones– has been shaky over the past few years.

Biden presented Sager with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for his strength and determination while fighting leukemia for nearly 18 months.

“I will continue to keep fighting, sucking the marrow out of life as life sucks the marrow out of me,” Sager said in his speech.

Sager, who has worked for Turner Sports for 34 years, missed 11 months while undergoing treatment for leukemia and a bone marrow transplant from his son before returning to TNT’s NBA coverage in March 2015. But he revealed in an interview with HBO in April that his cancer was no longer in remission.

The Batavia native threw out the first pitch at Chicago’s Wrigley Field on June 1 as part of “Conquer Cancer Day” festivities.

Timberlake presented the Icon Awards, three of the biggest awards of the night, to Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning and Abby Wambach.

Whether they show it or not, no coach likes being put on the spot with a sideline interview during the game. San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich doesn’t hide his distain for them, but he made a special exception on Wednesday night.

Last night marked the return TNT’s Craig Sager to the sideline for the first time since undergoing leukemia treatment in 2014. He and Popovich have built up a rapport over the years and the broadcaster previously stated that he couldn’t wait to interview the coach, gruff exterior and all.

Sager got the interview but he didn’t get the stoic reception he hoped for. “I’ve got to honestly tell you that this is the first time I’ve enjoyed doing this ridiculous interview that we’re required to do and it’s because you’re here and you’re back with us,” Coach Pop said before hugging Sager. “Now ask me a couple of inane questions.”

Beloved Turner Sports sideline reporter Craig Sager has suffered a setback as the leukemia he fought for the past year has returned. His son Craig Sager, Jr. announced the news last night on Twitter.

Sager was originally slated to call the NCAA Tournament for CBS and Turner, but was sidelined after coming down with the flu. He had made his return to television earlier in the month by reporting from the sidelines during an NBA on TNT telecast between the Bulls and Thunder. There is no word on whether Sager will be healthy enough to return for TNT’s coverage of the NBA Playoffs in the upcoming weeks.

Sager, who’s known for his distinctive outfits and memorable interviews, has been broadcasting since 1972. He has been a part of Turner Sports since joining sister network CNN in 1981 and has done reporting for the NBA, MLB, NCAA Tournament, Winter Olympics, and more in his time there.
