Denis Suarez Scores Twice to Lead Barcelona to 5-2 Win vs Real Sociedad

Barcelona secured a spot in the Copa Del Rey semifinals with a 5-2 home victory over Real Sociedad in Thursday’s second-leg game, thus making the aggregate score 6-2 after last week’s 1-0 first-leg win.

Neymar scored the lone goal on a penalty in the first-leg quarter-final on Jan. 19.

Former Manchester City star Denis Suarez opened scoring for Barca in the 17th minute with a low finish.

Lionel Messi doubled the lead ten minutes after halftime on a penalty for his 29th goal of the season.

Real Sociedad’s Juanmi made it 2-1 in the 62nd minute, but Luis Suarez scored for Barcelona one minute later to give the Catalans another two-goal lead.

Willian Jose headed in Real’s second goal in the 73rd, but then Arda Turan netted seven minutes later to make it 4-2 and then Denis Suarez scored his second goal of the game in the 83rd to make it 5-2. Turan tapped in a cross from fellow substitute Aleix Vidal at the back post.

Neymar, Luis Suarez, and Real’s Carlos Vela all narrowly avoided red cards.

Tensions rose just before halftime when Vela and Neymar went head-to-head after Real’s Mexican star fouled his Brazilian opponent.

Barcelona, who have won the Copa del Rey a record 28 times, are through to the semi-finals for the seventh straight season.

Manager Luis Enrique’s team join 10-time champions Atletico Madrid, Celta Vigo– who eliminated Real Madrid– and Alaves in Friday’s draw.

Manager Eusebio Sacristan’s Real Sociedad, meanwhile, are merely six points behind Barca in La Liga’s standings, and they are working towards their first cup final appearance since 1988.

Denis Suarez, a 23-year-old Spanish midfielder, reflected on his time with Barcelona and then on Thursday’s game.

“I came with a desire to be a part of this team and I am feeling better and better,” he said. “We started the game by dominating and once it was 1-0 they left us plenty of space. Everything is easier when you have the three forwards we have. We weren’t nervous at all, we just wanted to dominate the game and continue on this great run that we’re on.”

Barca will next visit Real Betis in Sunday’s La Liga match, and then visit Atletico in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey semifinal.

Sevilla Complain About Real Madrid Captain Sergio Ramos's Goal Celebration

Real Madrid have released a club statement expressing “complete support” for captain Sergio Ramos after Sevilla officially complained about his goal celebration during Thursday’s 3-3 tie in the Copa del Rey.

The 30-year-old Spanish central defender, who joined Real from Sevilla in 2005, scored a “Panenka-style” penalty to make it 3-2 in the 83rd minute, and celebrated by sarcastically cupping his hands to his ears.

Ramos said the Sevilla fans had “remembered my mother and insulted me from the first minute,” but added: “I asked for forgiveness and my celebration wasn’t meant as a lack of respect or an insult to anyone.”

As noted in his statement, Ramos’ celebration was prompted by Sevilla fans verbally abusing him and using derogatory language referring to his mother and wife.

Real Madrid issued the following statement: “Real Madrid wishes to express its total and absolute support for our captain Sergio Ramos, whose behavior is and has always been exemplary throughout his career.”

“Real Madrid has been inflexible when it comes to applying with absolute firmness its “zero tolerance” policy against violent individuals,” the statement added.

Sevilla sent its official complaint of the celebration to La Liga’s governing body, the LFP, calling for Ramos to be reprimanded.

Sevilla also, however, distanced itself from the aforementioned vulgar chants sung by some of the fans at their own Sanchez Pizjuan stadium.

“At the same time, Sevilla FC wants to make clear that it condemns the insults the player received, which cannot be justified or protected in any case, and we reiterate that Sevilla fans should eradicate insults both towards clubs and opposing players,” said the statement.

“It is something that only deteriorates the club’s image and can carry serious sanctions,” it added.

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane had already played down the incident and, speaking at his pre-game press conference on Saturday, added: “The statement which Sevilla released is the same as ours — maximum respect for all players, not just Sergio. There will be lots more nonsense but what we want is to play a game of football, nothing else.”

Zidane continued: “Above all, Ramos is our captain– an example to everyone. The fans just want to see a game of football. This issue is over. Sevilla think the same, to play a great game, and that is what we all want to see/”

Sevilla also expressed its desire to relay their “unwavering commitment against violence,” as well as “racism, xenophobia and intolerance.”

Enzo Zidane Scores In Real Madrid Debut

Enzo Zidane has already managed to do something his famous father and current manager, former Real Madrid star Zinedine Zidane, never did with the Spanish club: he scored on his debut.

Enzo Zidane Scores First Goal With Real Madrid in 6-1 Win Over Cultural Leonesa

Zidane jr. came on for Real Madrid in the second half of the team’s 6-1 home victory over Cultural Leonesa on Wednesday, the second leg of Copa del Rey Round of 32 game.

The 21-year-old midfielder scored Real’s fourth goal in the 63rd minute on his first shot with the club, a low, 20-yard strike.

With the win, Madrid have now defeated their third-tier opponents 13-2 on aggregate to reach the competition’s last 16.

Norwegian teenager Martin Odegaard, who signed as a 16-year-old in January 2015, also made his full debut.

Former France midfielder Zidane senior, 44, played 227 matches for Real after joining from Juventus for a then-world record £45.8m ($57.6 million) in July 2001, famously scoring their winner in the 2002 Champions League final.

Zidane junior, nevertheless, said his goal just 18 minutes into his first match with the club is just the beginning for him.

He told the official Real website: “To score on your Real Madrid debut is always a dream, and I’m really happy it’s come at the Bernabeu and with a win. It’s been a very special night. I’ve had to wait for my chance and now it’s here. This is the beginning, and I have to keep working to get more chances and help the team.”

Enzo played in two preseason friendlies and has made 15 appearances for the reserves this season.

The youngster also added that he is constantly learning “just from watching the best players in the world,” and that Real Madrid’s players treat him and all the other young players well.

Mariano Diaz stole the spotlight on Wednesday with a hat trick on his fourth senior appearance for Real.

Cesar Morgado scored Real’s sixth goal in second-half stoppage time. James Rodriguez also scored for Madrid in the first half.

Real Madrid will next visit Barcelona on Saturday in a La Liga matchup.
