On Monday, the International Cycling Union (UCI) cleared British cyclist Chris Froome of doping just days before this year’s Tour de France.

Cyclist Chris Froome Absolved In Doping Case

Froome, 33, is the defending Tour de France champion, and has won the 2,069-mile race four times. Should he win his fifth title this year, he would tie a record shared by Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil, and Miguel Induráin. The 2018 Tour de France starts on Saturday.

The Brit had been threatened with a possible ban after he tested positive for the asthma drug salbutamol in September at the Vuelta a España. A urine sample revealed Froome had two times the legal amount, and the cyclist has denied any wrongdoing.

In a surprising development, Team Sky — with whom Froome competes — said they would not be providing additional details on the doping case surrounding the cyclist.

“The Team won’t be putting out more information as it’s obviously a UCI/WADA process and it’s for them to decide what to put out and when. We don’t have access to their data and scientific studies,” a spokesperson for Team Sky told cyclingnews.com. “Chris had been out on his bike training all morning yesterday and wrongly assumed WADA would be putting out more detail when he said that to Sky News. We would of course be happy with them doing so but is ultimately for them to decide what they choose to do.”

A statement from the UCI stated the World Anti-Doping Agency had ruled that Froome’s sample did not include any violations, and thus it had decided to end its investigation into the cyclist.

According to the New York Times and several European publications, Tour de France organizers told Team Sky that Froome was prohibited from participating in the race until his doping case was decided.

Two cyclists have previously received suspensions for using salbutamol: Diego Ulissi in 2014 and Alessandro Petacchi in 2007.

In May, Froome won his first Giro d’Italia.

Chris FroomeBritain’s most famous cyclist, has failed a drug test.

Chris Froome Doping Scandal News

The 32-year-old Kenyan-born sensation — who won his third consecutive Tour de France in July — was discovered to have exceeded the allowed levels of asthma drug salbutamol on a test taken Sept. 7.

Froome’s scandal comes after his victory in the Vuelta in Spain in September. Under World Anti-Doping Agency rules, riders are permitted a level of 1,000 nanograms per millilitre. Froome, who rides with Team Sky, was found to have twice that in a urine sample.

If the test result is upheld, Froome could forfeit his Vuelta title and may also be banned from upcoming major competitions like next year’s Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France, the latter of which he has won four times in total (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017).

In 2007 the Italian cyclist Alessandro Petacchi was given a 12-month ban for excessive salbutamol and stripped of his five stage victories in the Giro d’Italia.

“It is well known that I have asthma and I know exactly what the rules are,” said Froome. “I use an inhaler to manage my symptoms (always within the permissible limits) and I know for sure that I will be tested every day I wear the race leader’s jersey. My asthma got worse at the Vuelta so I followed the team doctor’s advice to increase my salbutamol dosage. As always, I took the greatest care to ensure that I did not use more than the permissible dose.

“I take my leadership position in my sport very seriously. The UCI is absolutely right to examine test results and, together with the team, I will provide whatever information it requires.”

Froome also tweeted the following on Wednesday:

After several sources had told European press about Froome’s adverse analytical finding, David Lappartient, the president of cycling’s world governing body, the UCI, confirmed his organization was aware of the failed test.

In a statement, team Sky said Froome received the notification of the UCI’s finding on Sept. 20, prior to the individual time trial event at the world championships.

The UCI said in a statement that Froome is not facing a mandatory provisional suspension.

“Pursuant to article 7.9.1. of the UCI anti-doping rules, the presence of a specified substance such as salbutamol in a sample does not result in the imposition of such mandatory provisional suspension against the rider,” the statement read.

One drug expert, however, has claimed Froome could not have gained an unfair advantage by taking higher levels of salbutamol.

Dr Brian Lipworth, of the Scottish Centre for Respiratory Research, said taking higher doses of the asthma drug can actually impair an athlete’s performance because it can cause muscle weakness, increase their heart rate and reduce potassium in their blood.

“Salbutamol of that level means his asthma is being poorly controlled, Lipworth told Sky News. “The fact that he won with those levels is utterly remarkable.”

Lipworth added the substance is merely used to treat asthma.

The three-time Tour de France champion, who will be 32 later this month, tweeted a photo of his damaged bike and called the driver “impatient”, adding that the driver didn’t even stop and that he will report the incident to local authorities.

“Just got rammed on purpose by an impatient driver who followed me onto the pavement!” Froome wrote. “Thankfully I’m okay. Bike totaled. Driver kept going!”

Froome took the picture in Beausoleil, France, which is near his Monaco home.

His bicycle, which is reportedly worth approximately £9,000 (about $11,634) sustained damage to both wheels and its frame.

Froome, who last won the Tour de France in 2016, will hope to win his third straight title when this year’s race begins July 1 in Dusseldorf, Germany, since the first two stages of the competition are held outside of France. The Tour de France will end on July 23.

Should Froome win this year’s event, the Brit will become the fifth cyclist to ever do so four times, joining Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain.

The Team Sky rider first won the Tour de France in 2013. His crash Tuesday comes after the death of Italian cyclist Michele Scarponi, who was involved in his own collision with a van during a training ride in April.

British professional cyclist with Team Sky, Christopher Froome, has donned the yellow jersey the last ten stages of the Tour de France and is only three stages away from winning his third Tour de France title.

Froome won the stage 18 time trial 21 seconds ahead of Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, completing the 17 kilometer course in 30 minutes and 43 seconds. Froome now leads the 2016 Tour by three minutes and 53 seconds. Team Trek Dutch cyclist Bauke Mollema is in second place overall and team Orica British cyclist Adam Yates is in third place overall. Making up nearly four minutes of time is going to be difficult with three stages left.

Stage 18 started in Sallanches and included a gradual incline of nearly 700 meters over 11 kilometers before descending into Megeve.

Froome was 23 seconds behind Dumoulin at the 6.5 kilometer mark but closed the gap to 10 seconds at 10 kilometers. At the time check at 13.5 kilometers the lead had changed and Froome was 13 seconds ahead of Dumoulin. Froome proceeded to gather another eight seconds on his decent.

Froome won the Tour in 2013 and 2015 and if he wins 2016 he will be the first since Spain’s Miguel Indurain to win successive titles. Indurain won five Tours from 1991 to 1995.

At the start of stage 18, Mollema was 2 minutes and 27 seconds behind Froome. At the end of the stage he was one minute and 15 seconds behind him. Yates started 26 seconds behind Mollema and by the first 6.5 kilometers had caught up to him, but according to BBC after the 700 meter climb his legs were fatigued.

Columbian cyclist for Movistar Team Nairo Quintana holds fourth place overall. He was an anticipated contender for the Tour title but struggled in the mountains in stage 18 and lost another 70 seconds in the time trial and is four minutes and 37 seconds behind Froome.

Stage 19 marks the start of two days in the Alps. The 146 kilometers route will start in Albertville and end in Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc.

British cyclist Chris Froome was forced to run without a bike following a crash with a motorbike on one of the most iconic climbs of the Tour de France on Thursday.

Tour De France: Chris Froome Forced To Run Up Mont Ventoux After Late Crash

Froome, 31, crashed with Australian Richie Porte and Dutchman Bauke Mollema just over one kilometer (0.6 miles) from the finish on Mont Ventoux in Provence, France.

The defending champion was overtaken by rivals Adam Yates and Nairo Quintana in the melee, although organizers ruled that Froome should retain the overall lead.

Belgian Thomas de Gendt won stage 12, which had been shortened due to high winds.

As Froome climbed towards the finish line at Chalet Reynard, Porte rode into the back of a motorbike, which seemed to stop suddenly because of crowds encroaching on to the road.

Froome and Bauke Mollema crashed into Porte and all three fell off their bikes.

With his bike damaged, Froome continued on foot as he waited for a replacement.

According to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), cycling’s governing body, a cyclist can cross the line on foot but only if he/she has his/her bike with them.

Froome attempted to use a neutral service bike before switching to a third bike from the Team Sky car approximately 200 meters later, eventually crossing the line shaking his head.

Speaking to French TV, the 2013 and 2015 champion said: “I was with Richie Porte and Bauke Mollema and all three of us went into the back of the motorbike. I got hit from behind by another motorbike that broke my bicycle.”

He then continued: “I told myself, ‘I don’t have a bike and my car is five minutes behind with another bike – it’s too far away, I’m going to run a bit’.”

Froome finished one minute and 40 seconds behind Mollema of team Trek-Segafredo, who had immediately managed to remount his bike, and 44 seconds behind BMC’s Porte.

However, Porte and Frome were given the same time as Mollema, five minutes five seconds behind Lotto Soudal rider De Gendt.

“I’m happy with the jury’s decision,” Froome added. “I think it’s right. Thanks to them and thanks to the Tour de France organization.”

Mollema, 29, tweeted a picture of the crash and said: “This may NOT happen in the biggest race of the world! There has been too many accidents with motos last year!”

“The crowd were all over the road and it was such a mess,” added Porte, 31. “It was just crazy.”

It remains unclear whether the motorcycle Porte collided with stopped because of spectators stepping into its path.

However, over-zealous fans have already caused problems on this year’s Tour, with Froome fined 200 Swiss Francs ($204) for lashing out at an encroaching fan on stage eight.

There have been regular calls from both riders and organizers for spectators to respect the space of cyclists more.

Among riders, there was anger aimed at some of those who had come to watch the race as well as Tour officials.
