Carmelo Anthony, a ten-time NBA All-Star, has been elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2025.

Anthony was drafted third overall by the Denver Nuggets in 2003, a star-studded draft that featured LeBron James at first to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Dwyane Wade at fifth to the Miami Heat.

Anthony quickly became one of the league’s most prolific scorers, averaging 21 points per game as a rookie. Over eight years and 564 games with the Nuggets, he put up 24.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists, leading Denver to a deep playoff run that ended with a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2009 Western Conference Finals.

In 2011, the New York Knicks acquired Anthony in a blockbuster three-team trade. He led the league in scoring in 2013, but New York’s playoff run ended in the second round. In 412 games with the franchise, he averaged 24.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Anthony’s seven-year Knicks tenure ended in 2017 when he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he played just one season. He then had brief stints with the Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers and Lakers, finishing his career in Los Angeles during the 2021-22 season.

Over 19 seasons, he averaged 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists on 44.7% shooting from the field and 35% from three, ranking 10th in NBA history with 28,289 career points.

During his lone season at Syracuse, Anthony led the team to the 2003 national championship and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Anthony also dominated the international stage, taking home Olympic bronze in 2004 before winning gold in 2008, 2012 and 2016, making him the most decorated American men’s basketball player in Olympic history.

The 2008 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team, featuring Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard, lead this year’s list of finalists for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Along with them, women’s basketball legends Sue Bird, Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles made the list, as well as coaches Billy Donovan and Mark Few.

Anthony sits 10th on the NBA’s career scoring list with 28,289. The 10-time All-Star also helped lead Syracuse to a national championship in 2003.

Known for his defensive dominance, Howard won three consecutive NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards from 2009 to 2011. He was named to eight All-NBA teams, led the Orlando Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals, and claimed a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.

Following a bronze medal finish in 2004 and no medals at the 2002 and 2006 world championships, Team USA’s men’s basketball team reclaimed its dominance by winning gold in the 2008 Olympics. The star-studded roster included Anthony, Howard, Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Chris Bosh and LeBron James. The team was built by Hall of Fame chairman Jerry Colangelo.

Moore’s decorated career saw her win two national championships at UConn and four WNBA titles with the Minnesota Lynx before she retired in 2018 to pursue criminal justice reform. Bird, who also won two NCAA titles at UConn, won four WNBA championships with the Seattle Storm and is widely recognized as one of the greatest point guards the game has ever seen.

Fowles dominated the paint at LSU, leading the program to four consecutive Final Four appearances. She later won two WNBA titles alongside Moore with the Lynx and was named the league’s MVP in 2017.

A two-time national champion coach, Donovan led the Florida Gators to four Final Fours in 19 seasons, winning titles in 2006 and 2007 with a roster featuring Al Horford and Joakim Noah. He left college basketball to coach in the NBA, first with the Oklahoma City Thunder and now with the Chicago Bulls.

As Gonzaga’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, Few has taken the Bulldogs to 25 straight NCAA tournaments and twice to the national championship game, in 2017 and 2021.

Other finalists for the Hall of Fame include veteran NBA referee Danny Crawford, five-time All-Star Marques Johnson, longtime college coach Jerry Welsh, three-time All-Star Buck Williams, Stanford and WNBA star Jennifer Azzi, women’s basketball trailblazer Molly Bolin, Serbian coach Dusan Ivkovic, Miami Heat owner Micky Arison, and Israeli icon Tal Brody.

The nominees advance to the final stage of the selection process, where a panel of 24 anonymous voters will evaluate their candidacy. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, a candidate must receive at least 18 votes.

The announcement of the 2025 class will take place on Apr. 5 in San Antonio as part of the NCAA men’s Final Four festivities.

The enshrinement ceremony will take place on Sept. 5-6.

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James made history in Paris Wednesday against South Sudan, becoming the third player in Team USA history to score 300 points in Olympics competition. The two-time gold medallist joins Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant as the only players to achieve the feat.

James, the all-time leading NBA scorer, has become known for his longevity and consistently elite play, so it’s natural that the 39-year-old would earn an Olympics scoring title as well in his fourth Team USA appearance.

Against South Sudan, James scored his 300th point in the first quarter and finished the game with 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Even at an advanced age by basketball standards, he remains the leader of the American roster and has repeatedly delivered in the team’s pursuit of another gold medal.

“That’s what I told my brother after the first day, I was like dude’s 40 and he’s the best player on the court,” Amen Thompson, Houston Rockets Forward and USA Select member, said during a training camp last month.

While James may have finally entered the exclusive 300-point club at this year’s Olympics, it may be difficult for him take the top spot in the time he has remaining.

With 306 career points, he may be able to overtake Anthony at 336. But Durant, his current Team USA teammate, now has 472 and is likely to score even more as a floor leader besides James in 2024. Durant has taken every opportunity to play for Team USA in the Olympics since 2012, winning three gold medals in the process.

With James, Durant and a slew of NBA stars representing the United States in Paris this year, the team is heavily favored to win gold again. As the team prepares for the knockout stage, scoring records will only matter so much with competition like France and Germany waiting in the wings.

JJ Redick, the former sharpshooter turned media personality, is set to take on a new and unexpected role as the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. While he never donned the purple and gold as a player, Redick’s history with some of the Lakers’ legends, particularly Kobe Bryant.

During a recent appearance on 7 PM in Brooklyn Carmelo Anthony, who retired with the Lakers in 2023, shared a compelling anecdote about the friction between Bryant and Redick during Team USA tryouts. This story, set against the backdrop of Mike Krzyzewski‘s tenure as Team USA head coach, reveals a lot about the competitive spirit that defined both Bryant and Redick.

Krzyzewski, who had coached Redick at Duke, often praised the guard for his impressive collegiate achievements, including being a two-time ACC Player of the Year and the 2006 National Player of the Year. However, this admiration was not shared by Bryant.

“I remember Kobe couldn’t stand JJ Redick,” Anthony said to CBS Sports. Although the exact date of the story remains unspecified, it appears to be from the tryouts ahead of the 2008 Beijing Games.

“He got tired of Coach K talking about JJ Redick,” Anthony said. “Kobe took it very, very personal. To the point where he was running through screens in practice. He was denying JJ the ball. Fouling the s— out of JJ. I’m like, why are you treating the young boy like that?”

Bryant’s competitive nature didn’t allow Redick an inch. “This motherf—– ain’t let JJ Redick score in practice,” Anthony said. This relentless drive from Bryant was characteristic of his approach to the game, pushing both himself and those around him to their limits.

Interestingly, despite this rocky start, Redick later credited Bryant as an inspiration for his Mind The Game podcast with LeBron James, highlighting how interactions with legends can leave a lasting impact.

Redick’s journey with USA Basketball saw him win gold medals with the Under-21 team at the World Championship and Global Games in 2005, though he never made the Olympics roster. Bryant, on the other hand, went on to secure gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2012 London Games, further cementing his legacy.

As Redick steps into his new role with the Lakers, this history with Bryant may serve as a reminder of the high standards and intense competitive spirit that define the franchise.

His experience, both as a player and as someone who has faced and learned from the best, positions him uniquely to lead the team. The Lakers, a franchise built on the legacies of legends like Bryant, will now look to Redick to channel his experiences and insights into coaching success.

The intensity of Thursday’s Lakers-76ers game wasn’t confined strictly to the players on the court—though some were involved in the extra-curricular activity.

With about seven minutes left to play, Lakers forward Carmelo Anthony walked directly toward some fans near the court to exchange a few words.

The refs came in and stood in front of Anthony to thwart the spiraling situation, and the fans were kicked out.

It wasn’t clear what the fans said to get Anthony so riled up, but apparently they were calling him “boy” and telling him to “get in the corner boy” and “keep shooting boy.”

Anthony’s teammate LeBron James was involved in a similar situation earlier this season during a game against the Indiana Pacers. The superstar had refs kick out two unruly fans, who faced no other consequences.

After capturing his third Olympic gold medal (2012, 2016, 2020) this past summer at the Tokyo Games, Kevin Durant was honored as the 2021 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year.

“It’s amazing to be honored in this way,” Durant said. “First off, to represent your country and do it amongst the best athletes in the world, it’s an honor. So many great athletes come through USA Basketball and the national teams in general in all sports, and so to be chosen as one of the top athletes is an honor. I’m very grateful for the opportunity and thankful that I received this award.”

It’s the third time Durant has earned the distinction, as he won it in 2010 and shared it with Carmelo Anthony in 2016.

“Kevin was an incredible leader for USA Basketball this past summer,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO. “With this being his third Olympics, he had the respect of his teammates, and he clearly is one of the best basketball players in the world. USA Basketball is grateful to Kevin for his time and ongoing commitment to our organization, and we are proud to celebrate him as the 2021 Male Athlete of the Year.”

Durant started in all six Olympic matchups for the USA, and he averaged a team-leading 20.7 points per game and team second-best of 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. He shot 52.9% from the field, 37.5% from 3-point and 90.5% from the free throw line and was named by FIBA as MVP of the 2020 Olympic men’s basketball tournament.

“As he has done before, Kevin Durant performed brilliantly on the international stage and led the way to another gold medal,” said USA head coach Gregg Popovich, who was named as a co-recipient of the 2021 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year award on Dec. 15. “I remain awed by his work ethic, leadership and desire to excel.”

Durant’s 20.7 ppg. set a U.S. Olympic men’s single-competition record for points averaged, and he tied Carmelo Anthony for most Olympic gold medals (three). Durant is one of just four U.S. male basketball athletes to play in three or more Olympics.

Durant, who has led the USA in scoring in all three of his Olympic appearances and at the 2010 FIBA World Cup, owns eight U.S. Olympic men’s career records, including the top spot for points (435), points averaged (19.8), field goals made (146) and attempted (276), 3-point field goals made (74) and attempted (148) and free throws made (69) and attempted (80).

Among all Tokyo Olympic men’s basketball athletes, Durant ranked third in points scored and field goals made, fourth in field goals attempted and defensive rebounds and sixth in scoring average.

In the USA’s three preliminary round games, Durant scored 10 points against France on July 25; had 10 points and five assist versus Iran on July 28; and scored 23 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists against Czech Republic on July 31.

In the quarterfinals on Aug. 3, he led the USA with 29 points and four assists versus Spain; in the semifinals on Aug. 5, he led the USA with 23 points and nine rebounds against Australia; and in the gold medal game on Aug. 7, he led the USA with 29 points and six rebounds in a rematch with France.

Durant started in all four 2021 USA Men’s national Team exhibition games, and he averaged a team second-best 16.3 ppg. to go with 4.3 rpg. He recorded 17 points, five rebounds and four assists against Nigeria on July 10; 17 points and four rebounds against Australia on July 12; 17 points and six rebounds against Argentina on July 13; and 14 points against Spain on July 18.

Carmelo Anthony invited Draymond Green onto his podcast What’s in Your Glass? where the two NBA All-Stars touched upon the Warriors’ power forward’s public feud with ex-teammate Kevin Durant. Green reached out to Durant to suggest the idea of filming a candid talk. However, this did not come without difficulty.

“I think there was a time period of where he wasn’t trying to say nothin’ to me. I think there was a time period where my number might have been blocked from his phone … I could only talk to him through Instagram DM.”

This segment comes just two weeks after the highly anticipated Bleacher Report interview between Green and Durant that premiered on August 18, in which the pair addressed the infamous argument after the Clippers game in 2018 among other subjects.

The incident occurred at the end of regulation during a game in November 2018. After Clippers guard Lou Williams missed a fadeaway that would’ve broken a 106-106 tie, Green secured the rebound with five seconds remaining and proceeded to dribble the ball full speed down the court before turning it over as time expired. Durant, a prodigious offensive threat who has won four scoring titles, begged for the ball and subsequently voiced his frustration to his coaches and teammates.

Eight minutes into the sit-down interview, Green asked the long-awaited question, “How much did our argument against the Clippers drive you to ultimately leave the Warriors?” to which Durant responded:

“It wasn’t the argument. It was the way that everybody — Steve Kerr — acted like it didn’t happen. [Warriors GM] Bob Myers then tried to just discipline you and think that would put the mask over everything. It really felt like that was such a big situation for us as a group, the first time we went through something like that. We had to get that [s—] all out … We tried to dance around it.”

Regardless of who fans may choose to defend, the talk was authentic and immensely entertaining for the basketball universe to revel in.

Carmelo Anthony is the latest to join the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason after agreeing to a one-year deal to join LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook in Los Angeles.

Anthony announced the decision on Twitter with a video in which the “L” in “Me showcasing his nickname “Melo” and it transitioned to replace the L in Melo with the Lakers logo.

Anthony and James have had a connection dating back to their high school days. They were selected two picks apart in the 2003 Draft and have had numerous battles in their respective Hall-of-Fame careers. Now, they will fulfill their long-desired goal of becoming teammates on an NBA team.

After being out of the league for over a year, Anthony experienced a career revival with the Portland Trail Blazers the last two seasons, where he was a crucial piece to consecutive playoff appearances with averages of 14.3 points and 4.6 rebounds a night. He also shot a career-best 40.9 from beyond the arc this past season.

As he prepares for his 19th NBA season, Anthony is still looking for the first championship of his career.

“A title is the one thing I’m missing,” he told reporters during his introductory press conference. “It keeps me up at night and motivates me because I don’t have it.”

Longtime basketball superstar Carmelo Anthony is close to being divorced from his wife La La Anthony, who recently filed divorce papers.

The two have been married for over a decade. Prior to formal divorce papers this year, it was rumored that the two had physically split from one another in 2017 before attempting to reconnect in 2018. The two became engaged in 2004 and then married in 2010. They have one child together, Kiyan Carmelo Anthony, who is 14 years old.

Anthony is still producing successfully in the league despite possible off-the-court troubles. The prolific shooter is no longer as lethal as he once was but still averaged 13.4 points per game and also chipped in 3.1 rebounds.

Neither Carmelo nor La La has publicly commented on these rumors.

The inaugural Kareem Abdul Jabbar Social Justice Champion award has it’s finalists, and they’re forward Carmelo Anthony, forward Harrison Barnes, guard Jrue Holiday, forward Tobias Harris and forward Juan Toscano-Anderson, the NBA announced Friday. The award is named after one of the best big men of all time and a surefire top-10 player ever in Jabbar. The award is given out to the player who best embodies Abdul-Jabbar’s message of civil rights, Black empowerment and racial equality.

These five finalists were selected from a list of 30 nominees, with one from each team. The prize they receive is a $100,000 award that the league will donate to a social justice-focused organization of the winner’s choosing, and the four semi-finalists will receive $25,000 donations.

The social change fund was created by Anthony and his good friends Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade in July 2020. The fund is an investment organization that strives to address the social and economic issues facing Black communities, including voting, housing and education.

Barnes’ reason for being a potential award winner is because he worked with Be.Woke.Vote, a get-out-the-vote campaign aimed at historically disenfranchised young people. Barnes also pledged $200,000 to organizations and foundations that combat police brutality and racial inequality, including the family foundations of slain Black men and boys, including Trayvon Martin, Botham Jean, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Jordan Davis.

Holiday, whom some might consider the favorite for this award due to the fact that he won the league’s Joe Dumars Trophy for sportsmanship last week, established the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and global anti-racism protests after the murder of George Floyd.

Harris, through his own fund, the Tobias Harris Charitable Fund, awarded $300,000 to The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia to recruit teachers from historically Black colleges and universities, and created the Tobias’ Top Teachers program, which funds professional development workshops and purchases classroom supplies for teachers to help recruit and retain Black male educators.

Toscano-Anderson established the Journey to Achieve Foundation to help people of color in the Bay Area, Santa Cruz, California, and Mexico.

If you’re looking for when and where the winner of the award will be announced, it’ll be before Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals.

One of the premier scorers of his generation, Carmelo Anthony secured his legacy and his mark on the game by moving to No. 10 on the all-time scoring list on Monday night, passing Elvin Hayes with a three in the second quarter against the Atlanta Hawks. Anthony, known for his signature jab step and clutch shooting, is a sure fire Hall of Famer, and this accolade is the cherry on top of a wonderful 18-year career.

Anthony is one of only two active players to be in the top 10 for scoring, joining friend and fellow 2003 draft mate LeBron James. Although Anthony is a long way from his New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets days, in which he averaged 20-plus points per game 14 times, and even won the scoring title over Kevin Durant with the Knicks in 2012–13, he’s still a potent and crafty scorer. Anthony is currently averaging 13.6 points per game and shooting a career-high 40.3% from three. This success is coming primarily from a bench role, a different role for Anthony, and one many questioned if he’d be able to take. Luckily, his ego did not impact the situation at all, and he’s been described positively and as a great teammate exclusively.

Damian Lillard even went as far to say, “Of course, I want to win it for me, but I want my legacy to be tied to yours, because you going to have a great comeback story because you was on the couch, they weren’t trying to play you and you came back, we welcomed you. I want to see you, you’re going to be a Hall of Famer, but I want you to have your ring too.”

Anthony’s team, the Portland Trail Blazers, is currently in the sixth seed in the Western Conference, and attempting to avoid the play in tournament. They’re tied with the Los Angeles Lakers for this position, and get to face them later this week. The Lakers will be without James, but will have the recently healed Anthony Davis for the critical tilt, which will go a long way in deciding first-round playoff matchups.

The wait is over for Carmelo Anthony as he has signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Portland Trailblazers.

Anthony has been expressing his desire to return to the court since the off-season, yet not landing until now, with the 4-8 Blazers. Anthony is a 10-time All-Star who led the New York Knicks to three playoff appearances scoring over 24 points per game during his tenure.

GET TRAILBLAZERS’ TICKETS HERE!

Last year after ending up with the Houston Rockets after his time in Oklahoma with the Thunder, he explained that he “understood his role” and was “comfortable with coming off the bench when the team needs him to.”

Yet a few months later and only 10 games in, Anthony and the Rockets parted ways, Houston’s General Manager Daryl Morey explaining: “Carmelo had a tremendous approach during his time with the Rockets and accepted every role head coach Mike D’Antoni gave him. The fit we envisioned when Carmelo chose to sign with the Rockets has not materialized, therefore we thought it was best to move on as any other outcome would have been unfair to him.”

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

That sentiment was echoed by Houston (and Melo’s old Knicks’) Head Coach Mike D’Antoni. “We just had to see how things worked out,” D’Antoni said. “And the way we play probably wasn’t conducive to his game and he was trying to make the necessary sacrifices and it wasn’t fair to him as a Hall of Fame player to play in a way that wasn’t good for him, wasn’t good for us. It just wasn’t a fit.”

After two misfires, it seems as though other teams were not willing to take the risk. Until now. Although he has averaged 16.8 points per game, the Trailblazers were looking for some talent to fill holes.

“I have never seen him more excited to play basketball,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said by text on Friday morning. “And because of their injuries, this seems like a perfect fit.”

It’s been an up-and-down week for Carmelo Anthony. First, he was traded to the Chicago Bulls and will be waived if they can’t trade him. Spoiler: They won’t. It hurts to know the third-worst team in the conference doesn’t want you. Then, he returned to Madison Square Garden as a fan on Sunday and stood up and waved after receiving a standing ovation.

LeBron, Wade & More On Melo’s Ovation

After the game, Melo said “I’ve had some great years in this building. I look forward to coming back and playing in this building some more.” Maybe when he got the standing O he basked in it and thought back to his years as a Knick. Maybe he hoped for more. But he didn’t realize that everyone else had moved on, treating him as if he was already retired.

“At this point, I just want to be happy,” Anthony said about his plans. “I think I’ve put myself in a good, peaceful mind state right now, able to focus in on what I need to focus in on. And whatever’s going to make me happy, then we’re going to make it happen.”

Anthony attended the game to see Dwyane Wade— a close friend, a three-time champion and fellow 2003 draft class alumni — play out his last game in MSG. Anthony received a long standing ovation when he was shown on the jumbotron during the first quarter. LeBron James and DWade showed their support for Melo on Twitter.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Following the game, Wade was confident Melo could still help a team. “Everyone has to make the right sacrifices, and it has to be the right group, and it has to be the right coach,” he said. “It has to work perfectly when it’s an aging star in this game. And unfortunately, his last stop in Houston, it wasn’t the right stop. But Carmelo can play basketball.” he added.

Melo, now 34, averaged 13.4 points on 40 percent shooting in 29 minutes per game this season for the Rockets.  He’s an aging iso style ball handler in a league that’s outgrown it. Some stars grow old and try to win championships like Ray Allen. Others grow old and try to win locker room feuds like Allen Iverson and now Melo.  Though he only won a single playoff series in New York, he’s their brightest spot in the past 20 years. Prime Melo is gone. The Knicks are still holding on to him.

Houston Rockets forward Carmelo Anthony is set to join a new team: the Chicago Bulls.

Bulls Will Likely Release Anthony Immediately

The Rockets announced late Monday that 10-time All-Star “Melo” — who will be 35 in May — will be traded to the Bulls along with cash considerations.

However, the Chicago Tribune’s K.C. Johnson reported that Anthony is expected to be released by Chicago immediately after he clears waivers.  The trade couldn’t officially be completed Monday due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday. Anthony, a former New York Knicks star, is still owed $2.4 million this season. Should the Bulls take on this remaining salary, the Rockets would save $2.6 million after the luxury tax is taken into account.

Anthony has been looking for a new team since Nov. 11, when it was first reported that his time in Houston was ending after only ten games. The veteran forward was relegated to a bench role with the Rockets early this season, following his reported weak start with the franchise. Soon afterwards, news outlets started speculating where Anthony might end up next. The Los Angeles Lakers, the New Orleans Pelicans and the Philadelphia 76ers were all among the projected landing spots for Anthony at some point.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

NBA fans were quick to share GIFS and other funny reactions on Twitter to comment on the news about Anthony:

Despite a sluggish start to the season, the Rockets (26-20) are now fifth in the Western Conference thanks to masterful performances from players like MVP James Harden. Houston lost to the Sixers 121-93 in Philly on Monday night and next visit the Knicks on Wednesday. The Rockets won four of ten games during the stretch that Anthony played for them: in that period, Anthony averaged only 13.4 points on 40.5 percent shooting from the field and 32.8 percent from the 3-point line.

The Bulls (11-36) are 13th in the East. Chicago defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 104-88 on Monday but before that lost ten straight games.

Six months ago, ten-time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony and the Houston Rockets were a team that looked destined to be serious contenders for the Western Conference and perhaps the NBA championship. But on Thursday, the Rockets (7-7) announced that they were “working toward a resolution” to part ways with Anthony.

Carmelo Anthony to split from rockets

Anthony appeared in just ten games for the Rockets and averaged career lows of 13.4 points and 29.4 minutes.

At 34 years old and turning 35 in May, Anthony has already logged more career minutes than guys who played into their 40’s such as Steve Nash, Dikembe Mutombo, and Juwan Howard.

After a weekend of rumors that Anthony was about to be waived for the second time in four months, Houston GM Daryl Morey spoke with the media on Sunday in an effort to take control of the narrative.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

“One of the reasons I’m here, besides its 10 games in, about, is I think there’s just a lot of unfair-like rumors and everything going around about him,” Morey said of Anthony. “He’s been great with us. As Coach [Mike D’Antoni] said yesterday, his approach has been great. He’s accepted every role Coach has given him — starting, off the bench, whatever it’s been.

“We’re struggling as a team, and it’s my job, it’s Coach’s job to figure this thing out. But from Guy 1 to Guy 15 — and I’ll put myself in there; a lot of this is on me right now. We’re not playing well.”

NBA players around the league have tweeted in support of Anthony lately:

Anthony has five assists in 294 minutes, giving him one of the lowest assist rates in NBA history for a non-center. With his tenure in Houston over, speculation naturally turns to potential landing spots for the ten-time All-Star.

Options could be limited for Anthony as he still wants to play big minutes, but he likely won’t find many roles that offer that type of playing time. Anthony’s shooting has diminished over the years, which has further complicated his ability to find a leading role in today’s NBA.

Here are five potential landing spots for Melo should he finally be willing to play a reserve role:

The Golden State Warriors (12-4): It may seem silly to think of the Warriors needing more shooting, but it’s actually a bit top-heavy in that regard. Beyond the star trio of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant, the Warriors lack shooting depth and Anthony could fill a need for shooting and scoring off the bench.

Anthony shot only 40.5% overall and 32.8% from 3-point range with the Rockets. If he shoots closer to his career averages of 44.9% and 34.7%, Anthony could help make Golden State’s return to the Finals a bit easier.

Already a mash-up of big personalities, the Warriors’ locker room would seemingly have little trouble integrating another star.

The Philadelphia 76ers (9-7): Perhaps the best basketball fit for Anthony’s skill set, the 76ers are reportedly “kicking the tires on the idea” of bringing Anthony in.

The 76ers showed they’re all in for a championship push with the acquisition of Jimmy Butler. They know they’re not a complete product, though, and additional shooting is a top priority, especially since they sacrificed some by trading Robert Covington and Dario Saric to get Butler.

As with a potential Warriors pairing, Anthony would need to regain top form as a shooter to be the type of impact addition the 76ers would need him to be. However, his career numbers suggest he could help immediately improve Philadelphia’s 20th-ranked 3-point shooting.

Los Angeles Lakers: With the Lakers back in title-hunting mode, the potential to land another star looks promising. The Lakers and Anthony are connected on many levels. The most obvious link is that LeBron James and Anthony’s friendship is long-documented and would likely be the driving factor in any decision-making with regards to signing him.

The Lakers are in need of more help on defense than offense, and Anthony could fill a need for supplementary scoring. Josh Hart currently leads the second unit, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Lance Stephenson have been inconsistent. Any scoring from Tyson Chandler is a bonus. Anthony could be a potent additional option next to Hart and also add flexibility off the bench.

The Lakers would need to make some moves at the back end of the roster to add Anthony.

New Orleans Pelicans: They aren’t as flashy as the other teams on this list, but the Pelicans could be a better basketball fit for Anthony, one that could provide a boost in a needed spot for a promising young team with hopes of advancing further in the playoffs.

Elfrid Payton has been out with an ankle injury for nearly three weeks and New Orleans has had a tough time finding playmakers without him. With Anthony leading the second unit, he could assume the lead role off the bench and allow coach Alvin Gentry to rest  Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday at the same time.

The Pelicans’ fast-paced offense would seem to be ill-suited for Anthony. But as the top option on the reserve unit, Anthony would be able to slow things down whenever he wanted and use his versatility on the wing or the low block, places he has excelled before.

Struggling Houston Rockets forward Carmelo Anthony will remain with the team despite reports that he was to be waived soon.

Rockets GM Denies Reports Of Melo’s Release

Rockets general Manager Daryl Morey denied a report that Anthony had been informed that he would be waived, calling the report “inaccurate” and the scrutiny of Anthony’s play “unfair”.

“It’s unfair that there’s all this speculation on just one person,” Morey said. “I understand it, he’s obviously a Hall of Famer, but it’s unfair.”

The Rockets, following an offseason of soaring expectations, have descended to a pedestrian 5-7 start to the season. With Anthony’s acquisition in the offseason, the Rockets looked to bolster their high-octane shooting attack, to no avail. He’s averaging career-lows of 29.4 minutes and 13.4 points per game, but Morey finds that many of the problems lie in other facets of the team.

“I know that we’re talking about everything,” he said. “We’re a team trying to win the championship and we’re (5-7) and we’re not in a good place so we’re looking at everything. We’re looking at all aspects right now.”

Amid the reports, the Rockets answered back with a win over the Indiana Pacers. James Harden had a season-high 40 points, paired with a cool 26 from point guard Chris Paul, who showed support for Anthony, his teammate and friend.

“Melo’s been great here. That’s like a brother to me,” said Paul. “I don’t know what’s being said or whatnot, but Melo’s been great working hard every day.”

The third of the “banana boat” squad, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade had more incendiary words for Houston’s handling of the Melo situation. “Trying to make my guy @carmeloanthony the fall guy huh!?” Wade tweeted on Sunday. “Man Y’all need to stop. That’s the easy way out instead of addressing what the real problem.”

The Rockets have yet to release Anthony. They play the Nuggets Tuesday night at 9:00 p.m. EST.

Houston Rockets summer acquisition Carmelo Anthony didn’t tip off the season with the starters, as many anticipated, and he showed why Wednesday night.

Carmelo Anthony Struggles In First Game With Rockets

Offering little help to the team, the Rockets were drubbed by the New Orleans Pelicans in an absolutely abysmal defensive showing, losing at home 131-112. Anthony contributed a meager nine points in 27 minutes, going 3-for-10 from the field.

Anthony mentioned a “learning curve” in reference to his role as a bench player for the high-octane Houston offense. “It’s challenging mentally more so than anything, having to prepare for the game differently,” he said. “Other than that, it’s a challenge all the way around. It’s just a matter of how I’m going to react to that challenge and accepting that challenge, which I am, which I will do.”

Anthony has never had as poor an opener as he did Wednesday night, as this was the first season opener where he failed to surpass double digits in the scoring column. Perhaps due in part to the role reversal on the bench and minimized offensive responsibilities over the last few years, Anthony’s game has declined precipitously. He is second all-time with 1,054 consecutive games as a starter, and despite a history of comments denouncing any talk of a bench role, he has resolved to embrace the minimized role and accept the expertise of coach Mike Dantoni.

“For me, at this point, it’s more about what I have to do for the sake of the team, instead of trying to just go out there and do whatever or trying to have a specific role,” Anthony said.”Every night will be different; but for the most part, it is a challenge, but it’s something that I’ll get used to quick.”

Carmelo Anthony Traded To Hawks, Could Join Rockets

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, 34-year-old Anthony will be bought out for his full $27.9 million, but will then enter the free agency market and could join any team he wishes. Wojnarowski reported the Houston Rockets are the top squad Anthony is interested in playing for next.

NBA fans quickly jumped on Twitter to comment on the trade for Anthony, who lasted just one season with the Thunder after playing six years with the New York Knicks. Oklahoma City were eliminated by the Utah Jazz in the first round of this year’s playoffs. and Anthony was reportedly very unhappy all throughout this period.

As part of Thursday’s trade, the Hawks also received Justin Anderson and a 2022 Thunder first-round draft pick. Oklahoma City got Timothe Luwawu Cabarrot and Dennis Schroder, while Mike Muscala ended up with the Sixers.

Fans seemed to either poke fun at Anthony for his brief time with the Thunder and Hawks, or note how the forward being traded, waived and sent to another team seemed far too complex or simply not a very financially savvy move. Others questioned whether the Rockets would be the best fit for Anthony.

Marcus Morris scored a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to lift the Boston Celtics to a 100-99 home victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night.

Celtics vs. Thunder game score, highlights

The Thunder (43-30) was coming off perhaps one of their greatest victories this season, a win in Toronto on Sunday to snap the Raptors’ 11-game victory streak and that gave them a six-game win streak. Carmelo Anthony provided some solid offense for Oklahoma City, hitting back-to-back threes and then creating a third on an assist with 1:53 left to put his team up by six. However, the star forward missed a pair of free throws with 8.4 seconds remaining that essentially secured the triumph for the Celtics.

“We had the game won,” Anthony said. “Up two on the road, seven seconds left, having a chance to be sealed. So, the game was won.”

“I try not to say, what happened? Or what should I [have done] there?” he said of his subsequent missed free throws. “At this point, it’s a little too late for that. After the first one that was short, try to adjust it and shoot a little hard — a little too hard a second time. So, it happens. I live with it. You make some. You miss some.”

The Celtics (48-23) — who are second in the Eastern Conference — were missing Kyrie Irving, who continues to rest his sore knee. Boston’s Jayson Tatum finished with 23 points and also had 11 rebounds. Morris contributed 21 points.

Boston has pulled off several comebacks this season.

The Thunder — fourth in the Western Conference amid a rocky season — next host Miami on Friday, when the Celtics will visit Portland.
