The Houston Astros reacquired Carlos Correa in a shocking blockbuster deal with the Minnesota Twins just before the MLB trade deadline on Thursday.

Correa, a Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Star in his prior stint with the Astros, waived his no-trade clause to make the deal happen. He has also agreed to play third base, sharing the left side of the infield with Jeremy Pena.

“I had some conversations with the front office in Minnesota, and we were not moving [the direction] I thought we were after making the playoffs [in 2023],” Correa told MLB.com on Thursday, “and they agreed with me that it was time to move me.

“I let them know there was only one team I would allow that to happen.”

The Astros went into the trade deadline prioritizing a left-handed hitter and a starter, but third baseman Isaac Paredes could miss the rest of the season with a serious hamstring injury, prompting them to get aggressive in a trade for Correa. Moments later, their need for a left-handed hitter was also filled in a deal to acquire outfielder Jesus Sanchez from the Miami Marlins.

The trade amounted to a salary dump, with the Twins, up for sale since October, clearly motivated to shed financial obligations during the trade deadline. The Twins agreed to take on only $33 million of the remaining $104 million owed to Correa through 2028 and thus did not get much prospect capital in return for one of the sport’s most recognizable players. Matt Mikulski, a 26-year-old left-hander who is still in A ball, went from the Astros’ system to the Twins’.

The Marlins received shortstop Chase Jaworsky, a top-10 prospect in the Astros’ system, as well as minor league outfielder Esmil Valencia and major league right-hander Ryan Guston in exchange for Sanchez.

The Minnesota Twins activated shortstop Carlos Correa from the seven-day concussion list last week. The Twins’ shortstop missed the minimum of seven days after suffering the injury in a head-to-head collision with center fielder Byron Buxton. Buxton is making progress from his concussion, but he has yet to return to the lineup.

Correa and Buxton collided at the bottom of the third inning against the Baltimore Orioles, which would become the 11th win in the Twins’ recent 13-game winning streak. Brooks Lee stepped in at shortstop for Correa and went 3 of 19 in five games. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. has gotten most of the center field opportunities while Buxton has been dealing with his concussion.

Correa has been hitting .236/ .274/ .331 with two home runs in 41 games played. He has been unusually error-prone at the shortstop position despite being rated as a positive defender overall.

This start for Correa is unlike his play in the past as he hit .310/ .388/ .517 last year and put up a 3.7 WAR in only 86 games around injury last year. The problem for him is that he is starting to mount a lot of injuries on his resume.

Correa’s slow start is one of the reasons for the team’s 13-20 start.

But, on Thursday night, Correa delivered a clutch homer in 3-1 win against the Royals.

A routine fly ball from the Baltimore Orioles’ Cedric Mullins on Thursday became a terrifying moment when Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa and outfielder Byron Buxton both went for it. With their eyes trained upward, the pair didn’t see each other until they clacked heads.

Buxton managed to hang onto the ball, but both men lay dazed on the ground for a long moment after the play. Correa left the game immediately, while Buxton played out the inning before departing.

The Twins have officially placed both players on the seven-day concussion injured list, but have not set forth return timelines yet. Correa and Buxton were reportedly participating in concussion protocol exercises on Monday and are eligible to be cleared as soon as the end of this week.

In the meantime, though, the injuries handicap an already-underperforming Twins batting lineup. The team extended its win streak to 13 games on Saturday before losing to the Brewers 2-5 on Sunday—a streak that was largely bolstered by its pitching. Minnesota boasts the third-best ERA in the league, at 3.20, but its hitters are just 18th in runs scored.

Losing Correa and Buxton doesn’t help. While Correa was having a disappointing year to that point, hitting .238/.276/.333 over the course of the season, his offense was seemingly ramping up. He recorded multiple hits in two of his last three games going into Thursday. Meanwhile, Buxton has arguably been the Twins’ most valuable hitter, posting .258/.310/.503 splits and contributing his tenth home run of the year just an inning before the collision.

Teammates Ryan Jeffers, Kody Clemens and Trevor Larnach have stepped up to provide the offense necessary to win two of three games since the injuries in fact, Jeffers managed a four-hit game to lift the Twins over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.

Still, Minnesota will be missing Correa and Buxton both on offense and defense for as long as they’re out. With any luck, their absence will be short-lived.

The Minnesota Twins swept the Toronto Blue Jays in two games Tuesday and Wednesday to win the AL Wild Card series. The team will advance to the ALDS for the eighth time in franchise history and play the Houston Astros, winners of last year’s World Series.

By defeating Toronto, the Twins finally ended one of baseball’s more infamous droughts, as the team has not won a playoff series since 2002 despite making nine more appearances since. There are still more ancient barriers to climb, however, as the team has not made it to the ALCS since 2002 either. That season, the Twins lost to the Los Angeles Angels, who went on to win the World Series. In Minnesota’s previous two ALCS appearances in 1987 and 1991, the team went on to win the World Series.

The Twins’ pair of low-scoring wins over the Blue Jays came down to timely hits from returning stars and superior pitching. In Game 1, designated hitter Royce Lewis made his first appearance since September 19 and hit two home runs, accounting for all three of the team’s runs. Starting pitcher Pablo Lopez allowed a run in the sixth inning but the bullpen shut down Toronto batters and carried the team home to a 3-1 victory.

In Game 2, Minnesota’s offense was similarly stagnant for most of the game, but in the top of the fourth inning, shortstop Carlos Correa cashed in with the bases loaded with a single to score the first run of the game. The Twins tacked on another in that inning to take a 2-0 lead, but the second run wasn’t necessary, thanks to starting pitcher Sonny Gray. The Minnesota ace threw five scoreless innings against Toronto and the bullpen came through again, keeping the Blue Jays in check in the late stages and earning a series victory for the team.

With just 87 wins in the regular season, the Twins did not enter the postseason with strong prospects despite winning the AL Central. They will still be heavy underdogs when they take on the Astros, but with several stars hitting their stride immediately upon returning from injury, the team appeared commanding against the Blue Jays and seems prepared for a tougher matchup.

After earning a rare save for the Chicago White Sox in a 6-4 win Wednesday, relief pitcher Keynan Middleton had some choices words for Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa, who he struck out to end the game.

“I knew I was going to face Correa, and I don’t like him. So it was kind of cool,” Middleton told reporters. “I like that. I enjoyed that a lot. … I mean, he’s a cheater.”

Middleton has not earned a save since his days as a Seattle Mariner in 2021, but has maintained a lengthy career in the major leagues dating back to 2017. Like many MLB players, he clearly still holds ill will toward members of the 2017 Houston Astros, who won the World Series before getting exposed for a sign-stealing scandal which allegedly improved their performance at home games dramatically.

Correa was never identified as a key member of the sign stealing scheme, as all Astros players were granted immunity as part of MLB’s investigation. Nevertheless, he was a very prominent player on the team who benefitted from advance knowledge of the pitches being thrown. Opponents in subsequent seasons have found numerous ways to retaliate against 2017 Astros players, but Middleton’s approach was more direct and resulted in a run for the White Sox.

After losing 10 straight games between April 19 and April 29, the team has now won three straight in games against the Rays and Twins. Middleton pitched in back-to-back games on May 2 and 3, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings combined and helping the team win close games against Minnesota.

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said that he didn’t hesitate to give Middleton the save opportunity on no days’ rest. The reliever has gotten more chances late in games recently as Liam Hendriks completes his cancer recovery while Reynaldo Lopez recovers from a minor setback.

“This guy is a gamer,” Grifol said after the game. “He’s been through it before and I felt comfortable with him in that situation.”

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 15: Carlos Correa #1 of the Houston Astros celebrates while rounding the bases after hitting a walk off solo home run to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in Game Five of the American League Championship Series at PETCO Park on October 15, 2020 in San Diego, California.

Carlos Correa has agreed to another multi-hundred million contract with another MLB franchise – this time with his 2022 team, the Minnesota Twins.

It’s been a wild saga surrounding the two-time All-Star shortstop in the past month.

But The Athletic reported on Monday that things started to heat up with the Twins.

Then surely a day later, Correa’s struck a six-year $200 million agreement with the team.

The value could max out to $270 million with four extra years from vesting options, which depends reportedly depends on the number of plate appearances that Correa has.

But how did we get to this point anyways?

First, he was set to become a San Fransisco Giant after agreeing to a $350 million contract.

Then that fell apart over medical concerns and the Mets went ahead and swooped in to pick him up on a 12-year $315 million contract.

But the Mets came away with the same concerns after a physical and failed to devise a resolution.

The issue the teams had appears to be over a fractured right fibula that Correa suffered in 2014.

That allowed the Twins to jump and reach a deal – and fans of the team will hope this one will last because this one is also pending a physical.

However, things are different this time around because the Twins know the player.

And most importantly, it likely has a good idea about Correa’s medicals since it already performed a physical of its own last March.

Last year, the Twins and Correa agreed to a three-year, $105.3 million contract.

However, he decided to use his player opt-out following season one when he slashed .291/.366/.467 (batting average, on-base percentage and slugging).

While the opt-out helped him score a bigger payday, the medical concerns might have winded up costing him up to $150 million.

But all of that, just to sign what could be a team-friendly deal with a ball club he planned on leaving.

Carlos Correa‘s deal with the New York Mets appears to be in jeopardy as tempers flare in talks.

About a month ago, both sides reportedly agreed 12-year $315 million contract just weeks ago after the $350 million deal with San Fransisco Giants fell apart.

However, the Mets found the same issues the Giants did in the physical, which relates to a right fibula that Correa suffered back in 2014.

That has caused the deal to stall and the Mets are reportedly looking for language in the contract that will protect him in case an injury forces him to miss a significant amount of time.

However, MLB Insider Andy Martino reports that the ball club has become “very frustrated” and could possibly walk away.

Other teams have been in contact with Correa.

However, there is still a “strong chance” that both sides reach a deal, according to Martino.

But things could get interesting if the Mets decide back out, which might be difficult to do entirely.

This is because team owner Steve Cohen spoke about the pending agreement deal publicly, meaning an arbitrator could side with Correa.

It’s unclear what kind of trouble the Mets will be in if it can’t finalize a deal with Correa.

In 2022, Correa slashed .291/.366/.467 (batting average, on-base percentage and slugging).

Should the deal happen, Correa would likely be penciled in as the Mets’ everyday third baseman.

But if it doesn’t work out, expect the Mets to be in big for Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani next year, who is eligible for free agency.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Ohtani is “poised” to become the first-ever $500 million player in the MLB.

Cohen has shown that he’s not afraid to spend money if he believes it will help the team win.

Currently, the Mets’ payroll ranks at the top of the league at about $298 million, according to Spotrac.

The next closest team is the New York Yankees, which have more than $230 million allocated towards its players.

It’s been a wild last week for Carlos Correa and his deal with the New York Mets isn’t guaranteed to get done.

First, the San Fransisco Giants had a reported agreement of a 13-year contract worth $350 million.

However, that fell apart when the Giants drew concern over medical results.

That allowed the New York Mets to swoop in and agree to a $315 million contract.

However, the Mets found the same issue in their physical as the Giants did, which relates to a fractured right fibula that Correa suffered back in 2014.

While both sides are trying to work things out, a source cited by New York Post columnist Mike Puma only gives the Mets a 55% chance of signing Correa.

The Mets are looking for “add contract language” that would protect the team financially if Correa’s pre-existing condition forces him to extensive time.

Meanwhile, Puma further reported that Correa isn’t interested in revising the length or the financial terms of the deal with the Mets.

But things could get interesting if the Mets decide to back out of the deal, which might be difficult to do entirely.

This is because team owner Steve Cohen spoke about the pending agreement deal publicly, meaning an arbitrator could side with Correa, according to The Athletic.

Also, three other ball clubs have reached out to Correa’s camp in recent days.

Right now it’s unclear what kind of trouble the Mets will be in if it can’t finalize a deal with Correa, but a contract between the two sides might be in jeopardy.

Should it work out, the right-handed batter would likely play third base for the Mets, with Francisco Lindor locked in as the team’s shortstop.

Last year, Correa slashed .291/.366/.467 (batting average, on-base percentage and slugging).

The New York Yankees might not be done after re-signing Aaron Judge to a mega contract.

In fact, the MLB’s most valuable team could be in on another big hitter and a pitcher to help shore up the starting rotation.

And the Yankees could be having something big brewing with star shortstop Carlos Correa, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.

“The team I’m watching at the moment—the Yankees,” he said of Correa on sports radio station 95.7 The Game in the Bay Area.

“Because I’m definitely picking up a lot of vibes there that yeah they signed Aaron Judge to that $360 million deal, but they’re working on something big.”

While the San Fransisco Giants have been rumored around Correa, Olney noted that there haven’t been deep conversations when it comes to “dollars.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers can’t be ruled out for Correa either, which always seems to make a big move just about every offseason.

According to reports, Correa’s next deal will likely exceed $300 million.

So if the Yankees sign him he would likely be the second $300 million-plus player this offseason for the team.

Judge earlier this week agreed to a nine-year $360 million to remain a Yankee.

But another player the Yankees have been rumored around is starting pitcher Carlos Rodón.

When it comes to Rodón, there has been a lot of mixed reporting but the Yankees are at least interested.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi has said that there’s a chance that the left-hander could land a contract north of $200 million.

Another move the Yankees made this week was making a reunion with bullpen arm Tommy Kahnle, signing him to a two-year, $11.5 million contract.

But the team could look a whole lot different next year by bringing in one of Rodón, Correa, or both.

Also, the Yankees are reportedly shopping infielders including second baseman Gleyber Torres.

The Yankees payroll for 2023 is currently at nearly $208 million, according to Spotrac.

The Chicago Cubs are looking to make a big splash this free agency and potentially sign one of the biggest short stops available.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the ball club has been in contact with the following four names:

  • Carlos Correa
  • Trea Turner
  • Xander Bogaerts
  • Dansby Swanson

Of the four, Correa and Turner are the two biggest names.

Correa, who just opted out of his three-year $105 million contract, hit .364/.412/.603 (batting average, on-base, slugging) in 2022.

The stat line for Turner and Swanson last season was .298/.343/.466 and .277/.329/.447 respectively.

For Correa, The Athletic is projecting an eight-year $260 million contract.

Turner is forecasted to get eight years at $296 million, while Swanson is estimated at seven years for $168 million.

The Cubs interest in a short stop comes after it traded away Javier Baez at the trade deadline last season.

In 2022, Nico Hoerner played shortstop for the cubs, where he hit .281/.327/.410.

But clearly, the Cubs are looking for an upgrade at the position.

Currently, the Cubs have the 14th highest payroll in the MLB, allocating roughly $91.5 million toward its players, according to Spotrac.

Also, Cubs catcher Willson Contreras is now a free agent.

The organization is not expected to re-sign him, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale.

“He’s gone, for sure,” he previously said on NBC’s Sports Sunday.

“They couldn’t get what they wanted to trade down the line, which may scare him a little bit – the fact that nobody was willing to offer any amount to something better than a draft pick the Cubs would get. So he’ll walk and we’ll see where he ends up.”

Jason Heyward, Kyle Hendricks and potentially Marcus Stroman (player option) are scheduled to be free agents after the 2023 season.

The Cubs in 2022 finished with a 74-88 record and third in the NL Central in 2022.

Houston Astros star Zack Greinke silenced the Oakland Athletics’ crowd on Thursday night. Greinke pitched six shutout innings and struck out four batters in an Astros 8-1 win. Michael Brantley and Alex Bregman added to Houston’s scoring with back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning.

However, A’s fans jeered the Astros with boos during the pregame introductions. In addition, fans held up signs with trashcans on them and chanted “cheaters” at the Astros. A’s fans gave a loud cheer when Houston’s Carlos Correa was hit by A’s starter Chris Bassitt‘s fastball in the fourth inning.

The jeering from the crowd was not enough to affect an Astros squad that steamrolled the A’s. Aided by a pair of home runs by Bregman and Brantley, the Astros absolutely dominated Oakland. The other big offensive contributions came from designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, who hit an RBI double and a sacrifice fly, finishing the game with 3 RBI.

“Got to hear some boos, finally. That wasn’t fun to listen to, I didn’t think, but we played good so it didn’t matter,” Greinke said. “Hopefully we’ll keep playing good and it won’t be as big of an issue.”

“That’s fine, this is a veteran team,” Brantley said. “We’ve been in the World Series, we’ve been in the playoffs.” The hitter continued, “They can boo, they can yell, they can do whatever they want. But at the end of the day we have each other’s backs, and that’s all that matters,” Brantley said.

The jeers are not limited to the Athletics. Every other team across Major League Baseball will want to instigate the Astros. This stems from the Houston’s infamous cheating scandal that occurred in the 2017 and 2018 seasons. A league investigation found that Houston used a camera to illegally spy and steal the opposing team’s pitching signals. The team would then relay it to hitters by banging on trash cans. The cheating helped the Astros win the World Series in 2017.

After the investigation, the league suspended Astros manager A.J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow for one year, and they were subsequently fired by Houston. The organization was fined $5 million and forfeited first- and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021.

In 2020, the Houston Astros made the postseason for the fourth consecutive year but fell a win short of another trip to the World Series. The Houston Astros have won one championship in their franchise history. Over those four seasons, Houston went 340-206.

Here is Houston’s projected lineup.

Houston Astros Projected Batting Order:

  1. 2B Jose Altuve
  2. OF Michael Brantley
  3. 3B Alex Bregman
  4. DH Yordan Alvarez
  5. SS Carlos Correa
  6. OF Kyle Tucker
  7. 1B Yulieski Gurriel
  8. C Martin Maldonado
  9. OF Myles Straw

Houston Astros Projected Pitching Staff:

  • SP1 Zack Greinke
  • SP2 Lance McCullers
  • SP3 Jose Urquidy
  • SP4 Framber Valdez
  • SP5 Cristian Javier
  • CL Ryan Pressly

Houston Astros Team Outlook:

The Astros faced drastic losses over this past offseason. The most significant loss was outfielder George Springer, who signed with the Toronto Blue Jays via free agency. The Astros also lost closer Roberto Osuna, reliever Brad Peacock and outfielder Josh Reddick to free agency as well. The only additions the team made were catcher Jason Castro, relievers Pedro Baez, and Steve Cishek, outfielder Steve Souza and Ryne Stanek.

Houston’s starting lineup has the same core of veteran bats and should be successful if designated hitter Yordan Alvarez and outfielder Kyle Tucker are successful. Starting pitcher Justin Verlander is out for the season and as a result, the team is lacking the aces that helped carry them to the postseason in recent years. Greinke is in good standing, but the backend of the rotation has a long way to go.

Regarding the Astros’ bullpen, reliever Ryan Pressly was the closer last year but underperformed, and generally speaking, the team lacks lockdown relievers. Looking toward 2021, the Astros will win games by relying on their offense, but their fate in another postseason lies in the hopes that their pitching staff will improve.

Carlos Correa: Division Series - Kansas City Royals v Houston Astros - Game Four

In the 11th inning last night in Houston, star shortstop Carlos Correa belted a solo shot over the right-field wall to give the Astros the 3-2 in extra innings. With no outs in the inning, Yankees southpaw J.A. Happ served up a cutter that Correa tagged for 394 feet and the ballgame.

From there on, adrenaline carried Correa around the bases. “As soon as I hit it,’’ Correa said, “I knew it was going over the fence. The adrenaline started pumping like crazy. I don’t even know what I did. I’ve got to go watch the video. But I know I was hyped.’’

This Astros win evened up the series at one game apiece after falling to the Bronx Bombers 7-0 in game one. Despite being the favorites coming into the series, the Astros dropped game one after SP Zack Greinke got hit around by the high-powered New York lineup.

In game two, however, the pitching staff of the Astros was instrumental in their victory. After starter Justin Verlander went 6.2 innings allowing just 2 runs while striking out 7, the Houston bullpen combined to toss 4.1 innings, only surrendering one hit and no runs. Reliever Roberto Osuna worked 1.2 innings striking out 2 Yankee batters whilst not surrendering a run nor a hit.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

The Yankees’ bullpen, until the 11th, was equally as dominant: recording 23 straight outs before Correa’s home run.

Correa, however, has struggled so far this postseason with a hitting line of .136/.136/.182 and 10 strikeouts in 22 plate appearances. The bigger concern has been his ongoing back injury which forced him to lay in the aisle of the airplane on the team flight to St. Petersburg during the ALDS.

Astros’ third baseman, Alex Bregman, however, is not concerned: “He was born for October,” Bregman said.

Similarly, Jose Altuve recounts his pregame conversation with Correa, primed for a breakout night. “He told me before the game,’’ the Astros’ second baseman said, “and he was like, “Josey, I think I’m going to do something big tonight.’ He really did.’’

The series heads back to the Bronx on Tuesday afternoon for game three. Luis Severino will toe the rubber for the Yankees, squaring off against arguably the most dominant ace in baseball this year, Gerrit Cole.

With the series tied 1-1, game three is sure to be one you won’t want to miss.

Astros vs. Dodgers World Series Game 7 Score

The Astros raced to a 5-1 victory over the Dodgers in Los Angeles in Game 7 on Wednesday night to capture their first-ever World Series title.

Houston jumped to an early lead, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Lance McCullers started for the visitors, although he lasted only 2 1/3 scoreless innings after hitting four batters, the most in a World Series.

Reliever Charlie Morton sealed the win after allowing one run with four strikeouts in four innings.

Dodgers starter Yu Darvish, meanwhile, left the game after 1 2/3 innings, having allowed five runs (four earned).

George Springer led the game with a double, and Alex Bregman then reached on an error to score Springer, and then Bregman himself scored on a Jose Altuve groundout to first. Springer then added a two-run homer in the second.

The Dodgers went 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position. Cody Bellinger struck out three times, surpassing Aaron Judge’s recently established record for most strikeouts in a single postseason.

Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts was criticized for not starting Clayton Kershaw.

Another big moment came after the contest, when Astros shortstop Carlos Correa proposed to his girlfriend on the field. She said yes. The 23-year-old Puerto Rican said he didn’t have a backup plan regarding his proposal if his team lost the game.

“I’ve been thinking about it for months now, but I was waiting for the perfect opportunity, you know,” said Correa. “I knew we had a great team, we could accomplish this, and I wasn’t wrong.”

His fiancee is none other than 2016 Miss Texas USA Daniella Rodriguez. Correa said he asked one of the clubhouse attends for help late in the game.

“One of the clubbies, I talked to him in the ninth inning, and I’m like, ‘I don’t want to jinx anything, but if we get the three outs, please bring me the ring because I am going to get engaged in the ballpark.'”

Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa was named the American League Rookie of the Year on Monday. Correa received 17 first-place votes and 13 second-place votes for a total of 124 points.

Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor came in second, with 13 firsts, 14 seconds and two thirds for 109 total points. Minnesota Twins designated hitter Miguel Sano was third with 20 points.

Correa, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft, had an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .857, while Lindor’s was .835. Correa was also the majors’ youngest position player: he didn’t turn 21 until Sept. 22. He banged out 22 home runs and 68 runs in 387 at-bats. He had such an influence on the Astros that his fellow teammate Jose Altuve stated that Correa should be considered one of the faces of the game.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Correa stated on a conference call from his house in Puerto Rico, where he said thousands of proud fans were waiting to celebrate with him. “It really means a lot not only for them, but me as well.”

Correa is also the first Astro in team history to win the AL award, and the second to be named rookie of the year. Correa recognized that the metal plate in his right leg caused him pain for a good part of the year. His 2014 season with Class A Lancaster was cut short in June due to a broken right ankle.
