In a normal NBA season, there is a time after the All-Star Break and the trade deadline where a lot of veterans on bad teams asked to get released. Said bad teams usually acquiesce to these demands and there is a flux of useful veteran players released onto waivers and these players almost always sign with the current title contenders in order to chase one last ring. In recent years, the teams that get these players are whatever team that has LeBron James. Although this is not a common practice in the NFL, this is what appears to be happening with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With Tom Brady going to the Bucs in mid-March, there have been many veterans seemingly following him there with Rob Gronkowski signing soon thereafter and on Thursday veteran RB LeSean McCoy signing with the Bucs. It’s a savvy move by McCoy if he wants to either chase a title for his last season or get a better contract since a lot of Brady’s RB’s get inflated touchdown numbers with getting the luxury of punching the ball into the endzone from the one-yard line after a classic Brady drive.

McCoy’s agent Drew Rosenhaus positioned it as the latter. “He’s very excited to play with established vets like [Tom] Brady and Gronk [Rob Gronkowski] in trying to win another championship,” Rosenhaus told ESPN. If this season happens, which is still up in the air, the Bucs offense was already loaded but now they seem to have an embarrassment of riches. Brady, 42, definitely knows that he is close to being done, and with these weapons at his disposal, this season may be his best shot at going out with a Super Bowl.

In losing their perfect season last week to the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers have now one goal in mind: to win the Super Bowl. In winning the NFC South division, being the outright No. 1 seed, and achieving a first-round bye, the only thing the Panthers were playing for was for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. In yesterday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Charlotte, this would be the goal if they were to stay in the city throughout the next couple weeks.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was all passing and rushing yesterday throughout the game, finishing the game with 21 of 26 passes completed for 293 yards and two touchdowns. Newton also rushed for two touchdowns, tying Steve Young’s NFL record of 43 touchdowns. Other notable stat lines was Panthers rookie wide receiver Devin Funchess caught for 120 yards and a touchdown and Cameron Artis-Payne ran for 44 yards and a touchdown as well.

With the season over and Super Bowl hopes high, the Panthers have a desire of stopping any team that comes through Charlotte. “We find our edge playing in front of the home crowd,” Newton said after his sure MVP-type game. “Everything here feels just right. We don’t have travel to a hostile environment. This is our house — and it’s hostile.” The Panthers will have to wait on who will be coming to Charlotte when Wild-Card weekend kicks off next weekend.

In a close battle between division rivals in the NFC South, any noteworthy play could have turned the game either way for the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers matchup yesterday. But the best play of the day had a twisted outcome in that it never counted when the play was ruled dead.

With the Falcons having the ball at the six yard line trying to score a touchdown in the first quarter, quarterback Matt Ryan threw an intended pass to wide receiver Julio Jones, only to have intercepted by Buccaneers linebacker Kwon Alexander. With Alexander breaking through Atlanta’s players, he was on the way to scoring the first touchdown of the game with a 93-yard return. But Jones, who played both wide receiver and defensive end at the University of Alabama, turned on the full throttle to run to catch Alexander and brought him down before he could reach the end zone. The play would eventually be called dead because of an offsides penalty being called against the Bucs and the Falcons keeping the ball. This resulted in Jones in having to sit out a play in order to catch his breath before going back out on the field.

The Falcons went on to lose to the Bucs in a thrilling 23-30 loss.
