MAMARONECK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 20: Bryson DeChambeau of the United States kisses the championship trophy in celebration after winning the 120th U.S. Open Championship on September 20, 2020 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.

Bryson DeChambeau, the reigning U.S. Open champion, will not be representing the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics, an omission that underscores significant flaws in the current Olympic Golf Rankings system.

Despite an impressive year marked by a T6 at the Masters, a second-place finish at the PGA Championship, and a victory at Pinehurst No. 2 DeChambeau’s affiliation with LIV Golf, a circuit that doesn’t award Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) points, has left him ineligible for the Olympics.

The Olympic Golf Rankings, which mirror the OWGR with slight modifications, determine the top 15 eligible players while limiting each nation to a maximum of four players.

This structure ensures that even if DeChambeau is the 10th best golfer globally, he falls behind five other American golfers due to the OWGR’s exclusion of LIV Golf participants. Team USA will field Scottie Scheffler (No. 1), Xander Schauffele (No. 3), Wyndham Clark (No. 5) and Collin Morikawa (No. 7).

DeChambeau’s exclusion highlights the inherent bias against LIV Golf players in international competitions. The OWGR’s refusal to recognize LIV events creates an uneven playing field, penalizing golfers who choose to compete outside the traditional PGA Tour ecosystem.

The United States isn’t the only nation grappling with dramatic roster changes post-U.S. Open. Canada’s lineup remained uncertain until Corey Conners clinched the final spot, joining Nick Taylor for the Paris games.

Meanwhile, other countries like Ireland and Spain saw their rosters finalized, with Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry set to represent Ireland, Jon Rahm and fellow LIV Golf member David Puig representing Spain.

The qualification controversy is not limited to the United States, golfers from Japan, Sweden and Norway, such as Hideki Matsuyama, Ludvig Åberg, and Viktor Hovland, are also slated to compete in the 60-man field.

The restrictive nature of the Olympic selection process, compounded by the OWGR’s exclusionary policies, raises questions about the fairness and inclusivity of the qualification criteria.

The exclusion of a player of DeChambeau’s caliber from the Olympics serves as a poignant reminder that the system needs reevaluation. The current qualification process fails to accommodate the evolving landscape of professional golf, where multiple tours and formats exist.

For the sport to maintain its integrity and global appeal, governing bodies must recognize and adapt to these changes, ensuring that all top performers have an equal opportunity to compete on the world stage.

After winning his first U.S. Open trophy during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bryson DeChambeau sits atop the golf world again.

On Sunday, the American won the U.S. Open competition held at Pinehurst Golf Course in North Carolina for his second major championship.

DeChambeau led the tournament on Sunday afternoon by posting a 67 the day before. However, he lost control early on, shooting +1 on the front nine as the competition closed. After bogeying the 12th and 15 holes, he sat tied at -6 with Rory McIlroy with three holes remaining. Mcllroy, one of the most famous names in golf, has not won a major in ten years and seemed destined to overtake DeChambeau.

However, Mcllroy imploded down the stretch.

After a streak of 492 straight made putts within four feet, the Northern Irishman missed two in a row of that variety on 16 and 18, which opened the door for his American rival.

DeChambeau did not make it easy on himself and found himself in the bunker for his third shot on 18, 55 yards away from the cup, with a hole position high up that could cause most shots to roll off. In an all-time clutch shot, the 30-year-old delicately maneuvered out of the sand, and his ball laid four feet away for an easy par putt that sealed the deal. Even though he went +1 for the round, DeChambeau clinched the title with a -6, while Mcllroy’s drought continued as he lost by one stroke.

Frustrated by his collapse, Mcllroy left the course immediately and did not talk to the media after his round. He later released a statement congratulating DeChambeau on his win.

Meanwhile, DeChambeau took it all in and became one with the crowd. He let as many fans as possible to touch the silver cup as he paraded it around the course. After winning, he went on the Golf Channel to detail his incredible third shot on 18.

Henrik Stenson Wins British Open vs Phil Mickelson

Henrik Stenson has been removed as the European team captain for the Ryder Cup after accepting a $40 million deal with LIV Golf. The 46-year-old golfer is the most recent defector in a long list of established competitors now signed on for the new Saudi Arabian tour.

The Ryder Cup’s statement on Wednesday morning was succinct, stating that Stenson failed to commit to “contractual obligations” he agreed to in March when he was first named captain. The statement made no further clarification about Stenson’s replacement, but said that one would be named “in due course.”

In his response on Twitter, Stenson explained that his decision to sign with LIV was partially motivated by the sizeable contract, but he also stressed that there were other factors at play.

“In closing, clearly a part of my decision to play in LIV golf events has been commercially driven but the format, schedule and caliber of player were also significant factors,” Stenson said. “I am committed to growing the game and using the game as a force for good.”

Rumors of Stenson’s ties to the LIV tour have circulated for months, but the official confirmation of the relationship ultimately triggered the Ryder Cup to act. Officials and golfers with both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, along with multiple human rights organizations like Amnesty International UK, have criticized LIV of “Saudi sportswashing” amid alleged human rights offenses by the tour’s backers.

Stenson may be the most recent LIV defector, but he is far from the most prominent, as he joins a list that includes household names like Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. The Swedish golfer’s decision is notable, however, because of the prominent position he relinquished in doing so. When he was named captain of the European Ryder Cup team earlier this year, Stenson said he was “absolutely thrilled and delighted.”

“I will do everything in my power and leave no stone unturned in the quest to get the Ryder Cup back in European hands,” Stenson said at the time.

In a conflict quickly spreading across the sport, many golfers are choosing to sign large contracts in direct defiance of the mainstream powers that be. All the while, the rift between LIV and the rest of the golfing world only seems to grow larger.

The PGA Tour got a bit stronger over the weekend, as both Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau released statements saying they’re both sticking with the tour and eschewing the much-ballyhooed rival Saudi Arabia-backed Super Golf League (SGL).

“While there has been a lot of speculation surrounding my support for another tour, I want to make it very clear that as long as the best players in the world are playing the PGA Tour, so will I,” DeChambeau wrote. “As of now, I am focused on getting myself healthy and competing again soon. I appreciate all the support.”

The two, as well as golf legend Phil Mickelson, have been rumored to be some top names to potentially join the SGL. The league says it’s willing to pay enormous amounts of guaranteed money to attract some of golf’s biggest names to compete with the PGA Tour.

“Over the past several months, there has been a great deal of speculation about an alternative tour; much of which seems to have included me and my future in professional golf,” Johnson said. “I feel it is now time to put such speculation to rest. I am fully committed to the PGA Tour. I am grateful for the opportunity to play the best tour in the world and for all it has provided me and my family.”

Mickelson recently has been dominating SGL headlines, saying that he’s spearheading the proposed league and noting how he hopes to use the rival league as leverage over the Tour.

The PGA Tour responded by increasing official prize money to $427 million, upping its FedEx Cup bonus money to $75 million, and creating additional programs that will pay millions more. The PGA Tour will pay out more than $838 million in player comprehensive earnings this season.

Aaron Rodgers Throws Controversial TD Pass to Jordy Nelson in Packers' 42-24 Loss to Redskins

Aaron Rodgers still has not given a final answer on whether he will play for the Green Bay Packers again, thus, leaving his future unknown.

Rodgers was playing in the Match, a made-for-TV golf event featuring Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and PGA Tour stars Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau. The charity event was played at the picturesque The Reserve Golf Course at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana.

Rodgers teamed with DeChambeau to take on Mickelson and Brady in a modified alternate-shot format. The two groups traded shots with one another on the course. It was a fun match for both teams as they trash-talked one another and poked fun at each other.

Despite participating in the Match, there is no guarantee that Rodgers will even be playing football in 2021. Rodgers and the Packers had a falling out that stemmed from the organization drafting a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft without notifying Rodgers. The selection of Jordan Love seemed to indicate that Rodgers’ years in Green Bay were numbered. To Rodgers, it was a slap in the face, especially considering all he has done for the franchise.

Following the Packers’ NFC Championship exit last season, Rodgers seemed ready to force an exit from the team as trade rumors ramped up. However, Green Bay was resistant and remains confident that he will return to the team. There have been no official words or statements from the quarterback about his future. It has been silence on his end. Rodgers even skipped the team’s mandatory training camp last month.

After his team’s victory in the Match, commentators asked the quarterback about whether he will play for Green Bay. “Yeah, I don’t know, we’ll see,” said Rodgers. “We’ll see, won’t we?”

The Master’s Tournament begins tomorrow!

While the 2020 edition of the Masters was just played five months ago, much has changed since then. Jordan Spieth is in peak form and Jon Rahm just became a father. Rory Mcllroy is still searching for greatness and Dustin Johnson is attempting to go back-to-back. Bryson DeChambeau is still using his hulk-smash approach and Brooks Koepka is attempting to play after knee surgery. All of these happenings are sure to keep everyone on their toes.

As of Monday morning, The Masters has 88 golfers lined up to start the week. After 36 holes, the top 50 and ties proceed. Historically, anyone within 10 shots of the lead was included but this rule has since been removed with no indication of its return. With that being said, the tournament is more competitive now than ever before.

The Masters will take place at Augusta National, which is one of the most famous courses in the world. The course is par 72 setting up 7,475 yards on the scorecard. There are many routes to success at Augusta National Golf Course and it will set the elite well-rounded golfers apart from the rest. When it comes to turf, the golfers will see overseeded Bermuda from tee-to-green and bentgrass on putting surfaces. All in all, this is an event that golf lovers surely will not want to miss.

Fifteen-time Major champion Tiger Woods, 45, was involved in a car accident on Tuesday morning, which left the golfer with multiple leg injuries. He was hospitalized following the single-vehicle crash in Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Woods was driving at high speeds when his SUV struck a raised median, crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic, and rolled over several times. The car came to a stop in a grassy area that was several hundred feet from where he had been driving. Chris Thomas, a representative of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, told ESPN’s Mark Schlabach that rescue personnel had to extract Woods from the windshield of the SUV.

Immediately after the crash, Woods was said to be awake and alert when firefighters and police arrived on the scene. After firefighters removed Woods from the vehicle by breaking through the car’s windshields, the golfer was quickly transported to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. A prybar and ax were used to remove Woods from the windshield.

Another car, which had stopped on the side of the road to assist Woods shortly after the accident, was also struck by another vehicle coming over the hill. Thomas said the latter incident was a minor traffic incident with no injuries.

Woods reportedly suffered serious leg injuries from the accident. Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, who was first to arrive on the scene, said Woods was calm and able to identify himself.

The 45-year-old underwent emergency surgery on his lower right leg and ankle. Dr. Anish Mahajan, the Chief Medical Officer and Interim CEO at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center released a statement describing the injuries.

“Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia,” Mahajan explained. “Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required the surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”

According to a statement released by Woods, he is “awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room.”

The crash and injuries have hampered the 45-year-old’s plans to make a comeback. It is still too early to know whether a full recovery is possible or not. Considering Woods’s age and his lengthy injury history, the road to recovery will be slow and drawn out. The accident reportedly could have been fatal. Woods was lucky to have had his seatbelt on. It very likely saved his life.

This is not the first time that Woods has been plagued by controversy off of the golf course. He has had a messy relationship with illegal substances and alcohol. in May of 2017, Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He pleaded guilty to charges of reckless driving in October of 2017. Prescription painkillers, a sleep medication, and marijuana were found in his system.

Immediately following this latest crash, many speculated that Woods was under the influence at the time of the accident. However, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the incident was “purely an accident” during a news conference on Wednesday. No criminal charges will be filed, as there were no signs that Woods was impaired.

Later on Wednesday, Villanueva told CNN that, when questioned at the hospital, Woods had “no recollection” of the crash occurring.

According to Golf Digest, Woods was in California for a two-day content shoot with Golf Digest/GOLFTV after serving as a host for the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational over the weekend. He briefly appeared on CBS’s broadcast of the Genesis Invitational, marking his last public appearance before Tuesday’s accident. Woods told CBS’s Jim Nantz that it was unclear when he would return to action after needing his fifth back surgery this past December.

The sports world was severely shaken up by the news of Woods’s accident. Justin Thomas, a close friend of Woods’s on the PGA Tour, addressed the accident on Tuesday saying he was “sick to my stomach.”

Speaking at a press conference, Thomas said that “It hurts to see one of your closest friends gets in an accident.”

“Man, I just hope he’s all right,” he added. “I’m just worried for his kids, I’m sure they’re struggling.”

Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner, said in a statement on Tuesday that he was aware of the crash. “We are awaiting further information when he comes out of surgery,” Monahan said. “On behalf of the PGA Tour and our players, Tiger is in our prayers and will have our full support as he recovers.”

The one golfer whom Woods trails in the sport’s Major championship count, Jack Nicklaus, said in a tweet that “We want to offer him our heartfelt support and prayers at this difficult time. Please join us in wishing Tiger a successful surgery and all the best for a full recovery.”

Bryson DeChambeau, who has been a frequent practice partner of Woods, also took to Twitter. “Heartbroken and shocked to hear about Tiger Woods accident today. My thoughts and prayers are with him for a full recovery.”

Others from the golf world, including Rickie Fowler, Ian Poulter and Adam Scott, also voiced their support for Woods.

News of Woods’s crash, though, extended far beyond the golf world as athletes from all across the sports world show their support for Woods in his recovery.

Bryson DeChambeau: Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented By MasterCard - Final Round

Bryson DeChambeau, 22, will begin his professional career this week at the RBC Heritage. Although announced Tuesday, the deal was likely completed a while ago.

Bryson DeChambeau Turns Pro, Does Amazing Carl Spackler Impression

In 2015, DeChambeau became the fifth golfer in history to win both the NCAA Division I Championship and the U.S. Amateur in the same year. He is also the most recent athlete to sponsor the Cobra and Puma brands, with whom he signed a long-term endorsement deal for clubs and apparel. He will also play at RBC Heritage using a Bridgestone golf ball and use that company’s gloves.

DeChambeau tied for 21st at the Masters last weekend, and has since drawn much attention as he prepares to play at least seven PGA Tour events this year.

“These past six months were preparing me for this week and my future,” DeChambeau said. “This transition should be fairly easy. I wouldn’t say it’s going to be that easy, obviously, because there’s obstacles thrown in your way. But we’re trying to make it as seamless and easy as possible.”

DeChambeau recently did a great impression of Bill Murray’s character Carl Spackler from the movie Caddyshack.

The youngster will play next week’s Valero Texas Open, the AT&T Byron Nelson, Colonial, Memorial, Quicken Loans National and the Travelers Championship in an attempt to earn enough FedEx Cup points to secure Tour status.

“There’s a lot of talk when you turn pro and there’s a lot of pressure on yourself as well,” said Colt Knost, who turned pro after a similarly solid amateur career that included victories at the 2007 U.S. Amateur and U.S. Amateur Public Links. “He’s got seven starts or whatever to come out here and get a job or he’ll have to go to Q-School and spend a year on the Web.com Tour.”

Bryson DeChambeau: Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented By MasterCard - Final Round

Bryson DeChambeau, the 22-year-old reigning U.S. Amateur champion and NCAA champion, is playing in his first Masters this week, and is set to turn pro just in time for the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head next week. DeChambeau appears to soon become golf’s next superstar.

PGA Tour Rising Star Bryson DeChambeau

One of DeChambeau’s most distinguishing traits is the fact that he has a name for each of his irons, each one having either historical or personal relevance. He plays with a unique set of clubs that are all cut the exact same length and weight — 37.5 inches, 280 grams — and each is built with a 6-iron shaft.

DeChambeau is very determined to win, especially at this week’s Masters, so that he can channel his inner Bobby Jones, the iconic amateur who founded the Masters.

In fact, DeChambeau is so obsessed with winning the Masters that he met with CBS commentator Jim Nantz so that he could pick his brain about the Masters.

“Bryson is obsessed with this idea of trying to win the Masters as an amateur,’’ Nantz said. “That was Bobby Jones’ all-time dream — that one day an amateur would one day win his tournament. So Bryson came over to my house and for two hours he peppered me with questions about everything and all things Augusta National and the Masters Tournament.”

Nantz then added, “It was fascinating. I dispensed everything I knew about the amateurs who had competed and who had contended at Augusta. He was taking it all in. He was collecting more data for that incredible mind of his. I’m anxious to see him.’’

DeChambeau also partnered with golf great Phil Mickelson to beat Dustin Johnson and Keegan Bradley in a friendly practice-round match on Tuesday. Mickelson spoke highly of DeChambeau, stating, “I really enjoy spending time with Bryson because he comes at the game from such a different point of view and has such well thought‑out opinions as to why and how it should be played a certain way, a different way, the way that he plays it,’’

Mickelson said. “I think he’s going to have a steady climb in his career. He’s got an incredible amount of talent right now.’’

With regards to his view of Bobby Jones, DeChambeau simply stated, “I tried to learn as much as possible about Mr. Jones,’’ he said. “His spirit is still here, and it’s quite an honor to get to experience that here.’’

When asked whether he believes golf is a science or an art, the young Modesto, California native said, “It’s a mesh of the two. If you can beautifully mesh the art and science of it to enhance your game, there’s no downside to it.’’

One of the first things DeChambeau did on his first visit to Augusta National earlier in the year, after he had qualified for the Masters field by virtue of his U.S. Amateur win, was look at Jones’ clubs in the clubhouse trophy room.

“It was a pretty special moment, because we’d always heard that story, never verified it,’’ he said. “But when I actually got to go up to that case and I looked in … it inspired me even more. It was gratifying to our journey.’’

On Thursday, DeChambeau has a 9:48 tee time at the Masters alongside Paul Casey and defending champion Jordan Spieth.
