The Detroit Lions have made a surprise move and released Breshad Perriman just five months after signing the veteran wide receiver. Perriman signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with Detroit in March and was expected to team with fellow newcomer Tyrell Williams to stabilize a completely overhauled Lions receiving corps. Perriman has dealt with a hip injury this summer, and Lions coach Dan Campbell indicated his roster spot could be in jeopardy last week when he told reporters “there just hasn’t been enough out there” from the six-year veteran. “I don’t want to beat a dead horse. I appreciate Breshad,” Campbell said Monday. “Unfortunately, he had that hip that took him out a little over a week, or around a week, and we got him back and we just didn’t feel like there was enough there relative of who was left, who we were trying to keep, who could possibly be out there. It just felt like we needed to go another direction.”

With Perriman and Bolden off the roster, the Lions’ receiving corps is expected to include Williams, Quintez Cephus and rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown, with Allison, Kennedy and Kalif Raymond contending for the other roster spots. The Lions on Monday also waived cornerback Mike Ford, one of the team’s top special teams players. Other players waived Monday were defensive tackle Miles Brown, safety Alijah Holder, guard Evan Heim and wide receiver Damion Ratley. Offensive tackles Dan Skipper and Tyrell Crosby were waived/injured and will move to the injured reserve list if they go unclaimed on waivers. Backup quarterback Tim Boyle is also having surgery on his broken right thumb with no timetable set for his return. “We’re a lot more hopeful than that, but I can’t rule that out right now,” Campbell said, when asked if Boyle’s injury is season-ending.

The Lions made headlines this offseason when they made the surprising move of trading longtime quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Rams for Jared Goff and two first-round picks. Detroit signed Dan Campbell as their new head coach and hired Brad Holmes as their general manager and executive vice president. Clearly, the Lions are moving in a completely new direction.

After losing their top wideout in Kenny Golladay to the Giants in free agency, Detroit signed veteran wide receivers Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman. The Lions signed running back Jamaal Williams to backup second-year stud D’Andre Swift.

Last season, the Lions had one of the worst defenses in the league. Detroit allowed the most passing and rushing touchdowns in the league. The Lions hired new defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to hopefully improve the defense.

NFC North: The Lions do not have a shot at winning the division even if Aaron Rodgers were to leave the Packers. They would still have to overcome the Bears and Vikings, and both of those teams have better all-around rosters than the Lions. The Lions might be decent on offense if Goff can hold his own, but the defense is not talented enough to compete in the division.

Matchups: The Lions will have to overcome formidable opponents this season. There will be no easy matchups for Detroit. They have a particularly rough stretch in the second half of the season after their Week 9 bye. Between Week 10 and Week 18, the Lions will have to face several playoff contenders such as the Steelers, Browns, Cardinals, Seahawks and Packers.

Overall: The Lions have made offseason moves that demonstrate that this team is moving in a very new direction. This includes hiring a new head coach, general manager and defensive coordinator. The Lions traded away their franchise quarterback in Stafford for a downgrade in Goff. Detroit will not make any big impact this season. They won’t even come close to making the postseason and may finish with one of the worst records in the NFC.

Prediction: The Lions will finish in last place in the division with a 4-13 record.

The New York Jets signed former Buccaneers‘ receiver Breshad Perriman to a one-year deal worth $8 million shortly after losing slot receiver Robbie Anderson in free agency to the Panthers on Tuesday. According to ESPN, the deal includes $6 million guaranteed.

The 26-year-old recorded 36 receptions for 645 yards, 17.9 yards per catch and six touchdowns in 2019, all career-highs. Perriman also appeared in 14 games, the most since his rookie season.

SLIDESHOW: 50 GREAT SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2019

Originally a first round pick in the 2015 draft, Perriman has battled knee problems over the years including an injury that kept him sidelined his entire rookie season. In 2016, he played every game and compiled 33 receptions for 499 yards, 15.1 yards per catch and three touchdowns. The following season he appeared in just 11 games and finished with a measly ten receptions for 77 yards. He was subsequently released by Baltimore and signed with Cleveland where his numbers slightly increased as Perriman finished with 16 receptions for 340 yards, a career-high 21.3 yards per catch and two touchdowns in 10 games.

The Jets, however, may regret not re-signing Anderson who was the most productive receiver on the team the last three seasons. In 2019, Anderson finished with 52 receptions for 779 yards, 15.0 yards per catch and five touchdowns. Anderson is definitely the better player, but had two four-game stretches without a touchdown during the season and ultimately decided to sign a two-year, $20 million deal with Carolina, a price tag too expensive for New York. The organization is hopeful Perriman will take the next step in his development and be a comparable replacement for Anderson.
