The Baltimore Orioles were flying high heading into the 2025 season. Baltimore came off a 91-71 2024 campaign, which saw them get swept in the Wild Card series by the Kansas City Royals.

The Orioles were one of many teams plagued by the injury bug in 2025, with 29 players on the injured list. Catcher Adley Rutschman missed some time due to two oblique strains, and shortstop Gunnar Henderson played through a left shoulder injury. Baltimore ended the season 75-87.

Despite his injury, Henderson led the Orioles in hits (158), home runs (17), RBIs (68) and batting average (.274).

Sitting at 15-28, the Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde after leading them to two consecutive playoff seasons and a division title in 2023. Third base coach Tony Mansolino was named interim manager for the remainder of the season. Baltimore hired Craig Albernaz as their manager on October 27.

Outfielder Cedric Mullins was traded to the New York Mets at the trade deadline for three minor league pitchers.

Baltimore was 24th in the MLB in batting average last season — the offense hit .235. The offense also combined for 1,273 hits, 191 home runs and 643 RBIs. Pitching wasn’t pretty as the staff had a 4.60 ERA, placing them near the bottom of the league. Dean Kremer had a 4.19 ERA and struck out 142 batters in over 171 innings, leading the team in these statistics. Jackson Holliday contributed 142 hits while maintaining a .242 batting average.

Pete Alonso signed a five-year contract to headline Baltimore’s offseason. The Orioles sent Grayson Rodriguez to the Angels in exchange for outfielder Taylor Ward, while reliever Ryan Helsley signed with the team last December. Ex-Mets pitcher Chris Bassitt joined the Orioles on February 13, 2026, on a one-year deal.

The Orioles are hoping to bounce back this season. Alonso will bolster a young offensive lineup with his power-hitting. With the Mets, Alonso won a Silver Slugger award in 2025 and averaged 38 home runs a season during his tenure in Queens. Alonso also won the Rookie of the Year award in 2019, where he surpassed Aaron Judge’s rookie home run record. Prospect Samuel Basallo is eyeing an improved season since he’s expected to play a bigger role on the offense.

The AL East is known as a tough division because the Yankees, Blue Jays and Red Sox field teams ready to make playoff runs. The Rays can’t be forgotten, as they are known for making more out of less. Aside from this, the Orioles have potential, but they need to put in the work to flip the script. Alonso needs to prove himself as the soul of the offense, and the pitching staff must remain healthy and consistent.

The Baltimore Orioles are in last place in the AL East, and nine games outside of a Wild Card spot.

Baltimore finished the 2024 season with a 91-71 record, which was good enough for second place in the AL East. Unfortunately for the Orioles, the Kansas City Royals defeated them in two games in the wild-card round.

During free agency, Baltimore added veteran pitchers Kyle Gibson and Charlie Morton. The team also signed Tomoyuki Sugano from the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Professional Baseball League in Japan.

>GET DEALS BALTIMORE ORIOLES TICKETS NOW

Even with a successful 2024 season and adding multiple veteran pitchers, Baltimore got off to a rocky start. Through 43 games, the Orioles were 15-28, which led to the firing of manager Brandon Hyde.

Hyde wasn’t the only member of the Orioles who was let go, as Gibson was released one day after Hyde. Gibson only pitched in four games during the 2025 season, with a record of 0-3 and a 16.78 ERA.

Overall, pitching has not been a strength for Baltimore this season.

Baltimore is in the bottom two for batting average against and home runs allowed. It’s also in the bottom five for ERA, walks, and hits per inning pitched (WHIP).

The Orioles have also struggled offensively this season.

Ryan O’Hearn, Gunnar Henderson, Ramon Laureano and Jackson Holliday have been bright spots, but overall, Baltimore hasn’t been able to put it all together at the plate during its 2025 campaign.

Baltimore is in the bottom 10 for batting average, on-base percentage, strikeouts and runs.

Injuries have plagued the Orioles this season. Henderson started the season on the injured list, which prompted a slow start.

Star catcher Adley Rutschman, first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, and backup catcher Gary Sanchez are currently on the injured list. Pitchers Kyle Bradish, Felix Bautista, Tyler Wells and Grayson Rodriguez are also on the injured list.

The Orioles have already shown signs of selling, as reliever Gregory Soto was traded to the New York Mets for two prospects.

Baltimore is nine games outside of the last Wild Card spot, so it will be an interesting team to monitor, as the team could look to move on from more veteran players.

A routine fly ball from the Baltimore Orioles’ Cedric Mullins on Thursday became a terrifying moment when Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa and outfielder Byron Buxton both went for it. With their eyes trained upward, the pair didn’t see each other until they clacked heads.

Buxton managed to hang onto the ball, but both men lay dazed on the ground for a long moment after the play. Correa left the game immediately, while Buxton played out the inning before departing.

The Twins have officially placed both players on the seven-day concussion injured list, but have not set forth return timelines yet. Correa and Buxton were reportedly participating in concussion protocol exercises on Monday and are eligible to be cleared as soon as the end of this week.

In the meantime, though, the injuries handicap an already-underperforming Twins batting lineup. The team extended its win streak to 13 games on Saturday before losing to the Brewers 2-5 on Sunday—a streak that was largely bolstered by its pitching. Minnesota boasts the third-best ERA in the league, at 3.20, but its hitters are just 18th in runs scored.

Losing Correa and Buxton doesn’t help. While Correa was having a disappointing year to that point, hitting .238/.276/.333 over the course of the season, his offense was seemingly ramping up. He recorded multiple hits in two of his last three games going into Thursday. Meanwhile, Buxton has arguably been the Twins’ most valuable hitter, posting .258/.310/.503 splits and contributing his tenth home run of the year just an inning before the collision.

Teammates Ryan Jeffers, Kody Clemens and Trevor Larnach have stepped up to provide the offense necessary to win two of three games since the injuries in fact, Jeffers managed a four-hit game to lift the Twins over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.

Still, Minnesota will be missing Correa and Buxton both on offense and defense for as long as they’re out. With any luck, their absence will be short-lived.

Baltimore Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson and Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll have been named the 2023 Jackie Tobisnon Rookies of the Year.

This is the first time since 2017 that a rookie won the award unanimously when it went to Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger.

Henderson, who earned the NL Rookie of the Year honors, won over Cleveland Guardians Tanner Bibbe and Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas.

Carroll won the AL Rookie of the Year over New York Mets’ Kodai Senga and Los Angeles Dodgers James Outman.

Carroll received first-place honors after hitting .285/.362/.506 with 25 home runs and 54 stolen bases, which was the second most in MLB.

Henderson helped the Orioles to an AL East Title.

The Orioles and Diamondbacks will receive an additional first-round pick in 2024 in part due to the Prospect Promotion Incentive that the players’ union pushed for in collective bargaining negotiations. Henderson and Carroll will receive $750,000 for winning the award as part of the pre-arbitration bonus pool in the CBA.

After missing three games with a lower back injury, Baltimore Orioles right fielder Anthony Santander was asked Wednesday how he felt in his return game against the Blue Jays.

“Not 100 percent, but I feel much better today,” Santander said, smiling.

In his first game back with the team, Santander went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in a 7-0 Orioles victory. The 28-year-old is in the midst of one of the best seasons in his career, as he is currently batting .250 with 23 home runs and 67 RBIs. He has been a reliable presence in the young lineup, which has propelled the team to a 78-48 record in 2023.

“Nice to have him back in the lineup,” manager Brandon Hyde said after the game. “[His back] is probably something that I’m going to have to monitor, and as you can tell, he makes a huge impact on our lineup when he’s in there.”

Santander hit the first home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, sending the ball 393 feet to right field to extend the Orioles’ lead to two runs. He said after the game that he was expecting a pitch high in the zone but adjusted well.

“I guess I’m a good low-pitch hitter,” Santander said. “I was able to stay back on my leg and pull a good swing.”

The outfielder’s second home run in the bottom of the eighth inning put the Orioles in front 3-0 and kickstarted a five-run rally that sealed the game for Baltimore. Santander pulled this one over the right field wall as well.

As the Orioles begin to look ahead to the postseason, a near certainty for them regardless of whether they take the AL East over the Rays, experience will be especially important for the upstart contenders. None of the team’s everyday starters, Santander included, have ever appeared in the postseason. But Santander, having joined the team in 2017, is one of Baltimore’s longest-tenured members and could provide leadership when the time comes.

Currently boasting the second-best record in the MLB, the Baltimore Orioles sit at the top of AL East over the Tampa Bay Rays, who have been slumping as of late.

Prior to Thursday’s kickoff game for the series against the Rays, the Orioles were already ranked ahead of Tampa Bay, as this was the first time after the All-Star break since August 15, 2016.

Starting July off six and a half games back, Baltimore has the lead over the Rays, who are now two back, after winning Friday’s matchup (3-0) but losing on Saturday against the Orioles (6-5). This is an incredible turnaround for a team that is now only behind the Atlanta Braves from the NL East at 63-34.

“It’s just July, that’s kind of where I’m at right now,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “This team [the Rays] is so good and so hard to play, especially here. We’ve been on the other side of those types of games I can’t tell you how many times.”

Their win 4-3 against the Rays ended in the tenth inning on a sacrifice fly hit by Baltimore rookie outfielder Colton Cowser, who recapped the win Thursday night.

“I think tonight was a great team win,” Cowser said as he wrapped up his 11th major league game.

Center fielder Aaron Hicks started the tenth inning on second base as the automatic runner, advancing on second baseman and pinch hitter Adam Frazier‘s sacrifice bunt. On Cowser’s fly to left against Rays relief pitcher Robert Stephenson (1-4), Hicks was able to get home.

Hyde commented on his relief pitcher Felix Bautista (5-1) after the win, as he had a perfect ninth inning and stayed on for the following 10th inning for the Orioles.

“How about Felix Bautista?” Hyde said. “I’m so lucky to have him. The reason why he pitched the tenth is because he had such an efficient ninth. … He’s amazing.”

Rays first baseman Luke Raley was hit by a pitch from the Orioles pitcher, for Bautista to then strike out Rays left outfielder Randy Arozarena. Second baseman Brandon Lowe‘s ground ball for Tampa Bay resulted in a game-ending double play that led to the Baltimore win.

In the eighth inning, the game was tied 3-3, as Orioles third baseman Ramon Urias when made a diving stop on Rays designated hitter Harold Ramirez‘s grounder with two on and threw him out at first. Tampa Bay was trailing 3-1 before rallying back in the seventh inning, with Ray’s third baseman Taylor Walls singling and Christian Bethancourt, Tampa Bay’s catcher, following up by ending the Orioles starting pitcher Kyle Gibson‘s night with a bunt.

This then led to a two-run double from Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz on Orioles relief pitcher Yennier Cano. But Baltimore had a three-score flurry in the fourth inning, thanks to rookie third baseman Gunnar Henderson. Due to his foot speed paired with intelligent base running, Henderson got to third base after hitting a lead-off triple when Arozarena fielded the hit down the left-field line, resulting in a lobbed throw toward the infield after.

“It was tough to see,” Arozarena said through a translator. “I think it was more my fault throwing the ball really soft.”

Rays starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow followed up with a pitch, as the Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Baltimore first baseman Ryan O’Hearn.

This then led to a charged error for Rays catcher Francisco Mejia after the ball got loose on a tag attempt for Orioles right fielder Anthony Santander, which ultimately resulted in Baltimore’s lead 3-1 after Hick’s single.

The Rays had scoring opportunities, as they had at least one runner in position to score for each inning for the first five, but only scored one thanks to Mejia’s second-inning RBI single. Unfortunately for Meija, on Friday it was announced he will likely be out for 3-6 weeks with the left MCL sprain that sent him to the injured list.

“Ugly, yeah,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said of the inning. Tampa Bay previously was on a five-game losing streak before winning on Saturday, on par with the Pittsburgh Pirates in losing record going 4-14 in July.

Following Thursday night’s win and their Friday/Saturday matchups in the rearview for the Orioles, Baltimore ended up winning the series 3-1 over Tampa Bay. Their most recent win over the Rays on Sunday (5-3) further showcases their case as the top team in the American League at 61 wins and 38 losses.

Both teams from the AL East will be looking to contend in the playoffs by the time early October rolls around. There are still two months of the regular season left, so the division leader is not set yet.

The Baltimore Orioles acquired rookie pitcher Shintaro Fujinami Wednesday in a deal with the Oakland Athletics. Oakland received minor league pitching prospect Easton Lucas in return. The trade was one of the first significant deals to be made ahead of the August 1 deadline.

Fujinami has been used in unorthodox ways in his first season with the Athletics, beginning his MLB career as a starter before moving to the bullpen. He also played several games as an opener or pitcher who starts but only appears for one or two innings.

In 34 appearances and 49.1 innings this season, Fujinami has compiled a 5-8 record with an 8.73 ERA. The poor results are partially to blame on a shaky start to the season, as well as the Athletics’ horrendous performance overall in 2023, but Fujinami has settled into his role as a reliever well in recent months.

Baltimore will acquire the 28-year-old upstart at an opportune time, as the team just took first place in the AL East and seem poised to make a serious playoff push. Far removed from the doldrums of the American League, the Orioles are now a young, dangerous organization in MLB’s most competitive division. Fujinami, who boasts triple-digit fastball velocity despite struggles with control, could prove to be an asset for the team as it looks to maintain momentum in the second half of the season.

It will be interesting to see Fujinami adjust from playing for the Athletics, a bottom-feeder on the West Coast, to the Orioles, a bonafide playoff contender, in the span of a few days. The Japanese rookie has already learned a lot in his short time in the league and there may be even more for him to grow accustomed to in the coming months.

The Athletics, meanwhile, likely decided to part with Fujinami because he was a luxury they couldn’t afford. Though the team has essentially been eliminated from playoff contention since May (or even April), the team must now assume a forward-looking vision as it looks to build a more formidable roster ahead of an impending move to Las Vegas. Lucas, a 26-year-old lefthander with a 2.93 ERA in the minors this season, could be of use to the team at some point in the future.

Star college pitcher Tanner Witt announced Wednesday that he will return to the University of Texas for the 2024 college baseball season. Witt was selected in the 18th round of the MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles but will not sign with the team.

Witt entered the 2023 draft as Baseball America’s no. 56 overall prospect, but injury concerns were likely to blame for his fall to the 18th round. After a stellar rookie season for Texas in 2021, in which he earned a 3.16 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 57 innings, Witt had to undergo Tommy John surgery in his sophomore season. He appeared in just six games in 2023 and compiled a 10.97 ERA.

Once considered a first-round talent, Witt will now return to Texas and complete his fourth season with the team. The redshirt junior took to Twitter to announce his decision, simply saying, “Unfinished business” and quoting a passage from the Book of Psalms. The verse, “The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever,” is often used to refer to faith in the face of adversity.

Witt is one of many players who have not signed with teams despite getting drafted. This is because of a unique quirk in the MLB Draft which allows selected players to return to college if they have eligibility remaining. Countless MLB stars, among them Aaron Judge, Max Scherzer, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, all declined initial draft offers before getting signed later on in their careers. It is common among high school and college players alike who are taken late in the draft and believe they can improve their standing with more time.

With another year to recover from surgery, Witt could regain some of the notoriety which made him a top prospect early in his college career. Texas will likely be a national contender after retaining much of its talent from last season, when the team advanced all the way to the Super Regional before losing to Stanford in three games.

Pete Stendel, a YES Network cameraman, had to be carted off after suffering an orbital fracture due to an errant throw that hit his head, the network announced last week. The game was delayed for about 20 minutes, as Stendel was hospitalized and was “conscious undergoing tests” before he was cleared to be sent home to rest.

In their 6-3 win, Orioles rookie shortstop Gunnar Henderson attempted to throw a ball to first base to get the Yankees’ Anthony Volpe out in the fifth inning, but the ball flew over first baseman Ryan O’Hearn’s head and sailed to hit Stendel. Medical personnel then attended to the cameraman, as the crowd chanted “MVP” while he was carted off the field, giving a peace sign to the crowd as he received a standing ovation at Yankee Stadium.

“Definitely praying for him. It was good to see him obviously coherent and obviously raising his hand going off,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game.

“But I saw it pretty well right away, and it was very scary. I didn’t see how he fell back, but I knew what could’ve been possible falling back, on top of the impact from the velocity of the ball hitting him … Obviously, a difficult scene there, and just hoped he was OK.”

“Every time that a ball goes over the first baseman or even a foul ball from the hitter, you don’t want to see it going towards a fan. It just happened to be in the wrong spot, and I hope he’s doing all right,” Henderson said after the Orioles beat the Yankees 6-3.

“My prayers go out to him. I’m just thankful for the guys that rushed over there to him to help him.”

The YES Network tweeted said this about Stendel: “Pete suffered an orbital fracture and is home resting. He and his family appreciate everyone’s support.”

The Orioles have been on a tear recently, and rookie Gunnar Henderson is the main reason why.

After sweeping the Kansas City Royals in the series 3-2, 6-1, and 11-3, the Baltimore Orioles are in their stride at the right time. Baltimore is 42-24 and ranked second in the AL East, only behind the Tampa Bay Rays by four games.

The Toronto Blue Jays are next on the list for the Orioles, as Baltimore already won their first match in the series 11-6 and are on the hunt for another sweep. The 21-year-old Henderson has ten homers already this season and is on a three-game streak, not to mention one home run that was 462 feet in the air and was recorded as the longest home run in the 31-year history of Eutaw Street in Camden Park.

Two days after, the Orioles shortstop and third baseman hit his first career grand slam against the Blue Jays, as they recently had their pitcher Anthony Bass DFA’d and replaced after sharing an Anti-LGBTQ post. Baltimore plays their final two games of the series against Toronto this upcoming weekend.

Henderson was selected by Baltimore in the second round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft with the 42nd overall pick. In the summer of 2022, he was picked up by the Orioles to the major leagues after playing in the minors for three seasons.

This is just the start of Henderson’s major league career as an Oriole, as the last three games, he’s had five at-bats in each contest, with four runs, eight hits, and eight RBIs. It is insane that his home runs in those games are the same amount as his strikeouts total of three.

Either way, nothing has seemed to slow down the hottest and youngest hitter in baseball right now, as Gunnar is closer to a shot at the warehouse than ever before.

Something no one has ever done in MLB history in a live game, as this home run has been compared to Ken Griffey Jr.‘s hit at the warehouse, estimated at around 465 feet. But that was done during a home run derby in 1993.

Henderson was just a few feet away from shattering another record.

In the fifth century A.D., Saint Augustine argued that miracles aren’t contrary to nature, but only contrary to what people know about nature. Fans of the Baltimore Orioles oughta check him out. These fans are in the midst of an experience as fantastical and story-like as it is inexplicable and, in some ways, miraculous. Augustine might not define the Orioles’ radical improvement as a miracle himself, but Augustine didn’t see the team play last season either.

Since 2018, the Orioles have lived in the darkest corner of the lowest cellar of Major League Baseball. That year, the team went 47-115, making them one of the worst teams in the history of the sport. In 2019, Baltimore went 54-108, and the shortened pandemic season did nothing to dig them out of the chasm, as they returned in 2021 and went 52-110.

Barring the pandemic season, the Orioles have had a combined record of 153-333 across their last three full seasons of play, making them one of the worst three-season teams in MLB history, right there with the 1925-27 Red Sox and… the Baltimore Orioles, who went 144-316 from 1937 to 1939.

Going into the 2022 season, it would be an understatement to say that very little was expected of the Orioles. In ESPN’s preseason power rankings, the Orioles ranked 30th and last in the league with a projected record of 54-104 and a 0.2% chance of making the playoffs. The publication recognized the team’s young talent but considered it unreasonable to expect more than 70 wins. At the time, virtually no one questioned the take.

As of Wednesday morning on Aug. 10, the Orioles have a 58-52 record. They’re a half-game out of a playoff spot.

This Baltimore team isn’t close to being a World Series contender, but they’ve made themselves the undeniable story of the 2022 season. Young players like center fielder Cedric Mullins and rookie catcher Adley Rutschman have electrified the batting order and the team’s bullpen has the third best ERA in the league. But in spite all of the improvements that the Orioles have made in the span of a single year, it’s impossible to argue that they could have reached this point without first baseman Trey Mancini.

Unlike Rutschman or even Mullins, who has only been around for Baltimore’s more recent struggles, Mancini was an Oriole for all of it, debuting with the team in 2016. He saw very little action in that first year, in which Baltimore finished second in the AL East and lost on a walkoff home run against the Toronto Blue Jays in the Wild Card game. From 2017 to 2019, Mancini became a solid contributor for the team as it tumbled violently down the standings.

In 2020, the first baseman had to miss the entire season after receiving treatment for stage 3 colon cancer. He came back fairly strong in 2021, hitting .255 with 21 home runs on a team that was completely hapless at every point in the season. He was honored as the 2021 AL Comeback Player of the Year.

For a while, the 2022 season appeared to be a continuation of the trend for Baltimore. Mancini and a handful of his teammates were playing well, but by the end of May, the team was 21-30 and showed no signs of improving. June was a step in the right direction though, as the team alternated between strong stretches and setbacks. There seemed to be a pattern: they won one big, they lost one by just as much. They won four in a row from June 22 to June 25 and lost four in a row from June 28 to July 2. It wasn’t much, but it was mediocrity and it felt better.

Then all hell broke loose. Alternatively — nature took over.

On July 3, the Orioles defeated the Twins 3-1 and didn’t lose again until July 13. The 10-game winning streak came just before the Boston Red Sox began a disastrous skid, in which they went 3-10 from July 5 to July 17.

Boston’s backslide worsened after the All Star break while Baltimore continued to play solidly against division rivals in New York and Tampa Bay. By the end of July, the Orioles were 51-51, a half-game ahead of the Red Sox for fourth place in the division. With 60 games remaining in the season, the team had nearly as many wins as ESPN projected for them in the entire year.

With the trade deadline approaching, Orioles fans could hardly focus on midseason transactions. Their euphoria rose above backroom deals and mad dashes for prospects; the magic was right there on the field. The team was functional for the first time in forever, and the playoffs were a reality.

Then Mancini got traded. He was batting .268 with 10 home runs and then he was gone.

In addition to trading away closer Jorge Lopez, on Aug. 2, the Orioles agreed to a three-way deal with the Astros and Rays that sent Mancini to Houston in exchange for a pair of pitching prospects. Many complained that the trade effectively ended the Orioles’ magical 2022 run, but more than that, it simply felt wrong for the team to give away its heart, its longest-tenured, longest-suffering player in the midst of said run. As Sports Illustrated writer Nick Selbe pointed out, it was a cruel sign that Baltimore wasn’t done rebuilding.

But has Mancini’s departure really killed the magic? Have more sensible forces reassumed control of the Baltimore Orioles’ destiny? Those making those arguments clearly haven’t informed the Orioles; since losing Mancini on Aug. 2, the team has won six of seven games against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers and Blue Jays. With a 58-52 record, they’re only a half-game behind the Seattle Mariners for the last Wild Card spot.

The road ahead is long and arduous for Baltimore, as the team will have to play well against the Yankees, Blue Jays and Rays in late-season matchups to have any hope of a postseason berth. It’s unclear if they could’ve pulled it off with Mancini, and proceeding without him is that much more difficult.

All that being said, any argument against the Orioles at this point in the season is driven by logic, baseball knowledge and reasoning. They’re the same immutable laws of the game that led everyone to believe the team would be a laughing stock before the season, and they’re the same immutable laws that were emphatically defied when the Orioles found new life.

At the end of the day, they’re either going to win or lose and we’ll never fully understand why, but understanding might not be the point anyway. Maybe the point is that we’re all tuning in to watch regardless.

Indeed he did, and now the Dark Knight is in for some dark nights.

MLB has doled out its discipline—a 60-game suspension sans pay, retroactive to April 29—against Baltimore Orioles pitcher Matt Harvey after he was implicated in drug use and distribution in the Eric Kay trial following the death of Tyler Skaggs.

The league’s statement:

“The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Baltimore Orioles pitcher Matt Harvey has received a 60-game suspension without pay for participating in the distribution of a prohibited Drug of Abuse in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The start date of Harvey’s 60-game suspension is retroactive to April 29, 2022.”

It stems from Harvey’s testimony at the former Los Angeles Angels employee Kay’s trial for his role in the death of Angels pitcher Skaggs. A federal jury found Kay guilty on two felony counts after it was determined that he distributed the fentanyl that caused the death of Skaggs. Kay won’t be sentenced until June 28, though he faces a minimum of 20 years in prison.

During his testimony, Harvey, 33, admitted that he would provide Skaggs with Percocet pills, and that painkiller usage was common among MLB players at the time (2019). Harvey also copped to using cocaine and that he gave oxycodone to Skaggs in addition to receiving it from him.

On July 1, 2019, Skaggs was found unresponsive in his hotel room on a road trip and pronounced dead. His death was deemed to be the result of choking on his own vomit due to an accidental overdose—exacerbated by alcohol consumption—of oxycodone and fentanyl.

Once a star player for the New York Mets, Harvey has bounced around from the Reds, Angels, Royals, and, of course, Orioles.

When you finished tied for dead last in the standings and had the worst run differential by -75 runs, there’s always the promise of next year. Well, it’s next year for the Baltimore Orioles, who will try to vanquish any memories of last year’s abysmal campaign.

> GET DEALS ON ORIOLES TICKETS HERE!

However, fans seem to always be waiting—and vanquishing memories—in Baltimore: Since the O’s last made the playoffs in 2016, they lost 87 games in 2017; 115 (!!!) in 2018; 108 in 2019, finished 25-35 in the shortened 2020 season; and 110 last year.

Patience is clearly wearing thin. But perhaps 2022 is their year, as the team moved the left-field fence back 26.5 feet.

Truth be told, it will likely be a long summer in Baltimore, regardless of left field’s distance. But everyone’s record will be 0-0 on Opening Day—hope does indeed spring eternal.

The Orioles will open their season on April 8 for three games against division-rival Tampa. They’ll then head back home for three against the Brewers and three against the Yankees. Baltimore will also close out the first half of the season in Tampa.

They’ll open the second half at home for three against the Yankees and then four against who else? The Rays. Their regular season will conclude with four games in Boston, three in New York and three at home against the Blue Jays.

Get yourself someone who has your back like Orioles CF Cedric Mullins has teammate Trey Mancini’s.

Last month, Mullins, 27, announced his breakout 2021 campaign came on the heels of having about a dozen centimeters of his intestine removed due to Crohn’s Disease.

Why did he wait so long to come clean? You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.

“My situation wasn’t life or death,” Mullins said. “It was something I knew I’d be able to come back from, and Trey was coming back from his chemotherapy [from stage 3 colon cancer], and for me, all the support needed to go to him. For him to do what he did, come back and play a full season, regardless of how tired he was, he showed up every single day and he performed really well. I thought that was important for him to get that recognition.

“His accomplishment, it really outweighs mine, in my opinion. That was his moment.”

Holy cow.

The 29-year-old OF/1B earned AL Comeback Player of the Year as he played 147 games after missing the 2020 season.

After chalking up early-season stomach issues to food poisoning, Mullins was diagnosed, finished the 2020 season on antibiotics, and underwent surgery in the offseason. He reached out to Mancini for advice prior to the season.

“I told him you have a lot of time to catch up and don’t rush into anything,” Mancini said. “You’ve got a lot of time to get back and be yourself, and we all saw what did. He did just fine, so I think he ramped up the proper amount.”

Indeed, Mullins heeded the advice and did better than fine: He became the team’s first player to record 30 home runs with 30 steals; was an All-Star and Silver Slugger; and was the first player since 1965 to finish in top 10 MVP voting while playing for a 100-loss team.

“My recovery time in between games was a lot better,” Mullins said. “Able to get better sleep, able to eat better. I think that was the biggest thing, feeling natural energy coming back without having to force it.”

Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde described Mullins as the “ultimate teammate,” though that seems like an understatement.

“You never saw him let it bother him one time throughout the year,” Hyde said. “He never talked about it. He’s just such a positive guy that I think when it came out and he talked about it, a next level of appreciation came from everybody of what this guy was battling, what he went through and then to have the year he had just says how quality of a guy he is.”

A highly touted prospect headed into 2008, Travis Snider was at one point seen as the future of the Blue Jays franchise.

The 33-year-old outfielder was the team’s top prospect and the 15th best throughout baseball. Fifteen seasons and 630 MLB games with three teams later, Snider announced his retirement from professional baseball on Thursday.

“I have contemplated this day for a while but the time has finally come for me to hang up the spikes,” Snider said on Instagram.

The 14th overall pick in the 2006 Amateur Draft posted an .803 OPS in 24 games for the Blue Jays in 2008. Snider played parts of five seasons for the Jays, then was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Brad Lincoln at the 2012 deadline.

Snider would go on to play in eight different MLB organizations—only in the majors for the Blue Jays, Pirates and Orioles though—thanking them all in his retirement post. He racked up 4.3 WAR across 1,783 MLB at-bats, with 54 homers, a .244 average, and a .709 OPS.

“It is a beautiful struggle sharing a clubhouse with 30 other dudes going to battle 100+ times a year,” Snider said in the post. “I will miss that the most. But I am looking forward to being a more present husband, father, family member, and friend.”

Snider played 63 games with the Triple-A Gwinnett Braves last season.

Orioles Bullpen Struggles in 10-7 Home Loss to Padres

For the first time in 20 years, iconic Oriole Park and Camden Yards will change its dimensions prior to the 2022 MLB season.

With its opening in 1992 triggering a retro trend for MLB stadiums, Camden Yards will see its left field wall heightened from seven feet to around 12 from the foul pole to the bullpens in left-center field and moved back about 30 feet from its 333 distance down the line.

The move is an attempt to thwart the ballpark’s reputation for being home-run-friendly. In fact, Camden Yards saw the most dingers in 2021:

  1. Camden Yards, 277
  2. Great American Ball Park (Reds), 250
  3. Wrigley Field (Cubs), 242
  4. Target Field (Twins), 233
  5. Dodger Stadium (Dodgers), 231

The Atlanta Braves handed the Baltimore Orioles their 18th straight loss on Sunday. It was the longest losing streak since the Kansas City Royals lost 19 times in a row in 2005.

The loss on Sunday was the closest game that Baltimore has played recently. The 3-1 loss marked the third time that Baltimore had lost by two runs or fewer. Baltimore is three losses away from matching a franchise and American League record of 21 straight losses set in 1988.

Baltimore starting pitcher John Means pitched for six-plus innings and allowed three runs and four hits.

“I thought today was going to be the day,” Means said. “Felt good, felt like things were going in our favor, and it just didn’t happen.”

The Braves were the opposite of the Orioles as they won eight straight games heading into their Sunday win. However, despite Baltimore’s struggles, Braves manager Brian Snitker did not take them too lightly.

“These teams, they’re in a tough situation sometimes,” Snitker said. “It’s real easy to go into that situation and get swept before you know what the heck happened.”

This sentiment was echoed by Braves right-hand pitcher Touki Toussaint.

“We just take every win for what it is, and then [move] on to the next one,” Toussaint said. “We know how hard this game is.”

Atlanta took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Jorge Soler hit a solo home run to give Atlanta a 1-0 lead. Later in the same inning, Adam Duvall’s double made it 3-0. At the bottom of the fourth inning, Ramon Urias hit an RBI double with two outs for the only Baltimore run. The Orioles went 1 for 9 with men in scoring position.

“I have no problem with effort,” O’s manager Brandon Hyde said. “We’re not winning games. We’re not executing. We’re very inexperienced. We got beat this series by good pitching.”

Atlanta has now won nine straight games and won 16 of their last 18 games. They have also won a franchise-record of 13 consecutive road games.

Pete Alonso was seemingly cooked in the home run derby, with Orioles slugger Trey Mancini tallying 22 home runs in his final round of swings that needed to be bested by the Mets’ power hitter. Instead of a loss, Alonso cranked out just enough home runs (including six in extra time) to become the third back-to-back Home Run Derby champion, joining Ken Griffey Jr. and Yoenis Cespedes.

In total, Alonso scorched 74 home runs, winning a bejeweled necklace and a cash prize of $1 million. “Being able to showcase that, and really putting on a fun display for fans, I just think it’s a dream come true for me because when I was young, my parents let me stay up past my bedtime to watch this. That was one of the few nights per year I actually got to stay up past my bedtime, just watch incredible feats that you don’t see in a regular baseball game,” Alonso said.

Alonso was up against a host of strong hitters, who were also helped by a well-known hitter-friendly ballpark in Coors Field.

Many had hoped Mancini would win, as his comeback story from stage 3 colon cancer (diagnosed in the spring of 2020 – the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic) was a winner with fans. With every big fly, the underdog gained continually louder cheers from those at the event. “I’m still going through a battle, and there’s so many people going through battles still, but you can go back to where you were before. I feel great about my health and where I am and what the future holds, but you definitely don’t wanna take any day for granted,” Mancini said.

Sadly, the crowd favorite Mancini fell to Alonso in the final round. Overall, there were 208 homers belted in the derby, one of which traveled 520 feet – besting Aaron Judge’s 2018 record of 513 feet. Mammoth blasts were struck by Shohei OhtaniMatt OlsonJuan SotoTrevor Story, Salvador Perez and Joey Gallo.

“It’s just truly a blessing,” Alonso said of his incredible victory.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are having a historic season – historically bad, that is.

The franchise currently sits at a season record of 20-50, but 23 of those 50 losses have come on the road; the inability to win a game as the visitor this many consecutive times places them first with the longest losing streak of this type. They overtake the 1943 Athletics and 1963 Mets with the most consecutive road losses in MLB history.

The Diamondbacks are an abysmal 9-31 when playing away from home. Their losing streak dates back to May 4, which was a loss against the Miami Marlins. They have a six-game homestand for now before playing another away matchup that could snap their losing streak.

If they can turn around their losing ways on the road the next time they suit up as the visitors, their record might be quickly broken by the Baltimore Orioles, who have now lost 19 straight away from home.

New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole showed his worth in a dominating game against the Baltimore Orioles. The star pitcher helped the Yankees to a 7-2 win over Baltimore.

On Tuesday night, Cole pitched an absolute gem against the visiting Orioles. Cole threw seven innings and only allowed four hits while striking out 13 batters. It was an impressive game as Cole virtually held Baltimore scoreless.

“He just never had that lull,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters, “He was on the attack all night.”

The 13 strikeouts are the most for a pitcher so far this season. Cole generated 27 misses on 53 swings for a 51 percent whiff rate. So far, no other pitcher has generated 22 swings and misses in a game in 2021. In 2020, Cole and five other pitchers were able to record 27 swings and misses. Of those six pitchers, only Jacob deGrom did it three times.

The starting pitcher was paired with catcher Kyle Higashioka. Both are familiar with one another as they were paired together late last season. The two were pairs when Cole had an impressive 1.00 ERA in his final four outings to close out the 2020 regular season.

After the dominating performance, Boone was asked whether he would continue to pair Cole and Higashioka moving forward. “I’ll pair them up, I’m sure, a fair amount,” Boone told reporters, “But I also felt like Opening Day, Gary Sanchez and Gerrit were really good together.”

The Yankees’ manager then went on to complement the pair. “[Higashioka and Cole] have a good thing going, yin and yang and the details they go through between starts. I’m not going to go all-in on that by any means because he works well with Gary … but if it lines up that way, so be it,” Boone said of the pair.
