Former Colts star Andrew Luck will return to Stanford Football as its first general manager, the university announced Saturday.

Luck graduated from Stanford in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in architectural design, having broken school records in wins, total yards and touchdown passes, as well as winning the Maxwell, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and Walter Camp Player of the Year awards in his senior year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2022 and the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.

Personnel departments and general managers are still a fairly new concept for college sports, but are increasingly indispensable for recruitment. Schools like Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State have had personnel departments for years, and have consequently dominated the top recruiting classes.

Now, hoping to return the Cardinal to relevance, so will Stanford.

The hire comes amid the Cardinal’s fourth 3-9 season in a row, now under second-year head coach Troy Taylor. As general manager, Luck will work with Taylor in recruiting and roster management, fundraising, alumni relations, and more. “I imagine this being very hands on,” Luck said.

“I could not think of a person better qualified to guide our football program through a continuously evolving landscape, and I am thrilled that Andrew has agreed to join our team,” announced Jaquish and Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir. “This change represents a very different way of operating our program and competing in an evolving college football landscape.”

“I think Stanford is taking an assertive and innovative step,” Luck agreed in an ESPN interview. The novelty of his role lies in its expansion – while the typical college football general manager focuses primarily on recruitment, his responsibilities extend to the business side, particularly areas where Stanford has lagged behind, such as NIL and sponsorships.

Since his retirement from the NFL in 2019, Luck and his wife, former Stanford gymnast Nicole Pechanec, have moved back to Palo Alto, California, and become deeply involved in the community. Besides financially supporting Stanford Athletics and its NIL collective, Luck has returned to school to pursue a master’s in education.

The university hopes that Luck’s name, expertise, and commitment can turn the ship around and make Stanford Football exciting once more.

“It’s the most successful athletic department in the country,” Luck told Pat McAfee in a brief College Gameday appearance. “We’re excited for football to do its part at the Home of Champions.”

Former Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck is a now officially a Hall of Famer—a college football Hall of Famer, that is.

Luck was announced as part of a 21-member class Monday by the National Football Foundation, prior to the College Football National Championship Playoff Game.

While at Stanford, he ran into some bad “luck” as he twice finished as runner-up in Heisman Trophy voting. Luck departed Stanford with a 31-7 record as starter, passing for 9,430 yards and 82 touchdowns. In 2011, he took home the Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards.

“He was the best of his generation and is still a measuring stick for all quarterbacks who have come after him,” said Stanford head football coach David Shaw.

“I’m so honored to be a member of the Class of 2022 College Football Hall of Fame,” Luck said. “I have to say a big thank you to everyone at Stanford, especially my coaches, teammates, and wife.”

Luck was drafted first overall by the Colts in the 2012 NFL Draft and threw for 23,671 yards and 171 touchdowns to 83 picks in seven seasons with the Colts, despite missing half of 2015 and all of 2017 with injuries.

He returned with a vengeance in 2018, passing for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns to earn NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors. He then abruptly retired a couple of weeks prior to the 2019 season.

The College Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for December 6, 2022.

Andrew Luck went on his early retirement six weeks ago in early, shocking and widely debatable fashion. But apparently he can’t stay away from the team.

Luck was seen at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis posing for pictures with his replacement Jacoby Brissett and actor/comedian Mike Epps. For his part, Luck states that Indianapolis is their home to stay.

“My wife and I are so proud when people ask us where we’re from and we say Indianapolis,” Luck said. “It’s our home; we’ve made lifelong friends. This has been an incredible place to make a home and grow off the field and … Riley camps around the state. Going to the hospital. Getting a chance to talk with parents … reading to kids at schools … hanging out … children’s museum, the wonderful things they do there. A big thank you to this city. It’ll always hold a special place in my heart.”

Why Luck hasn’t taken a job with the team as a coach or adviser is a mystery. Apparently he texts and eats with Brissett since his departure. Many coaches and players had stated publicly that they keep in contact with Luck as well.

Anthony Castonzo and T.Y. Hilton as well as Eric Ebron have all said he keeps in contact. Sometimes about football, sometimes not. “When we text, it’s usually like, ‘Hey, good game,’ or I just see what he’s up to,” Ebron said recently. “I try not to talk football. It’s obvious he didn’t want to be around it, so there’s no point in bringing it up.”

For his part, Hilton stated that what made Luck walk away from football is still there and he does not see him returning. “No, he didn’t need football, but he loved the game,” Hilton said. “Whatever he did, he loved doing it. He always put his heart into what he was doing.”

The Colts have won against some NFL heavyweights, most recently beating heavy favorites Kansas City Chiefs. They play a good team in the Houston Texans this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

They’re going to need all the Luck they can…oh, wait! Never mind.

The Indianapolis Colts are gradually sliding out of the “sleeper team” category, and hopping into the “Super Bowl contenders” category. Sports Illustrated has Andrew Luck winning the MVP, head coach Frank Reich has built a squad of youth and experience on both sides of the ball, and the Colts defense is set to turn heads this season.

After all, this Colts defense has given up the fewest points in the last 10 weeks they were playing, led by the league’s leading tackler and Defensive Rookie of the Year Darius Leonard.

Leonard’s plans are laid out as, “to be defensive MVP every year, to be a Super Bowl champion every year and to be the leading tackler every year,” Leonard said to Bleacher Report. “I just want to be at the top. It’s who I am. I want to see my name at the top.” He also wants to win 11 Super Bowl rings.

“We kind of want to run our patterns against the offense, which is kind of a little weird to say cause the offense normally dictates what the defense does,” middle linebacker Anthony Walker said, according to Goshen News. “But we want to be able to dictate that. It’s gonna be fun (this year). It’s gonna be a lot of different things that offenses haven’t seen us do yet. So it’s gonna be fun.”

IN MEMORIAM SLIDESHOW: SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2019

Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus led this Colts defense for the first time last season. He has a different style of defense compared to most schemes in the NFL, as he likes to run zone coverage in the back end instead of man-to-man coverage. This cuts off passing lanes for opposing quarterbacks, while allowing the new signing Justin Houston and rookie Ben Banogu to rush around the edge. In this nickel zone defense, Kenny Moore as the slot cornerback has proven that he’s a vital piece to this Colts defense. He can cover downfield, and surprisingly, is a great pass rusher, recording four sacks last season.

For Luck, he returns for the first full preseason training camp since 2016. He battled a serious shoulder injury, and eventually had to have surgery and recovered in Germany. NFL analysts started to predict whether or not he would ever play in the NFL again. Nevertheless, here he is. The 29-year-old is entering his prime years in the NFL, and is one of the most comfortable players in the pocket with his solid offensive line sitting in front of him. Reich’s scheme is built off of rub routes with receivers that he can utilize this year with TY Hilton, new signing Devin Funchess, and Ohio State rookie Parris Campbell. The Colts also arguably have the strongest tight end core in the NFL, with Pro-Bowler Eric Ebron, Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox.

To sum up the Colts this offseason, they feel disrespected. “I think they’re hatin’ on the Colts,” Leonard says, according to Bleacher Report. “I’ll say that.” While Hilton says, “this team is special,” according to ESPN.

Andrew Luck Gets Huge Contract Extension

Andrew Luck’s 2017 season wasn’t. Just a year after signing a six-year, $140 million dollar contract and becoming the league’s highest-paid player, he missed the entire season. Some said his shoulder was shot. More controversy came when Josh McDaniels ditched the head coaching job at Lucas Oil Stadium. Was Luck’s shoulder really that bad? Was his career over?

But in his first game in 616 days, Luck threw for a career-high 39 completions. Through 15 games this season, Luck has thrown for 4308 yards, 36 touchdowns, and led three game-winning drives. At just 29, he looks to be a likely Comeback Player of the Year candidate. His last game this season, one in which a playoff berth rests on, is against the Tennessee Titans. Luck is undefeated in 10 games against the Titans. The Colts have also won eight of their last nine. This is all by a player who wasn’t able to throw a regulation size football until Memorial Day this year.

That’s not to say that Luck isn’t without his competition. DeShaun Watson, the second year quarterback out of Clemson, had the Houston Texans positioned in the no. 2 seed and headed for a first-round bye until his defense choked this weekend. Watson was one of the most electric players in his seven games last season. He bought into Houston and the city quickly fell in line behind him. Then, he tore his ACL for the second time. Houston’s season crashed there. Coach Bill O’Brien got a pass for that season but almost didn’t make it through this one as the team started out 0-3. A nine-game win streak followed. Now, they sit at 10-5 with one game left against the horrific Jacksonville Jaguars and a playoff berth clinched. Watson has 26 touchdowns by air and four by land.

Watson’s teammate J.J. Watt is also in the mix. At an age where players normally fall off a cliff, nevermind ones with his injury history, Watt is going through a renaissance. His 12.5 sacks are third in the league. That’s coming after playing in only eight games over the last two seasons. He’s there every week, recording a sack in all but two games since week three. Defensive Player of the Year will likely go to LA Ram Aaron Donald but if it wasn’t for his monster of a season, Watt would be the favorite for DPOY. All three are likely to play in January. But come February only one will have the trophy and it’s likely to be Luck.

Saints' Alvin Kamara suffers concussion

The NFL season is waning. Teams are playing on Saturday, the Lions are out of playoff contention, and it’s week 16. Of course, that means that the Pro Bowl selections are released.

2019 Pro Bowl Rosters Released

Drew Brees and Patrick Mahomes will lead their conferences at quarterback. The Los Angeles Chargers have the most players on the rosters with six. The Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints all follow with five selections each. Somehow, the 11-3 Los Angeles Rams only have four selections, one of which is a special teamer. The Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers had no players selected. Tom Brady nabbed his 14th selection, tied for most all time.

That’s not to say the selections were perfect. Oakland, tied with Arizona for the worst record in the league, (3-11) traded away likely defensive player of the year Khalil Mack to the Bears.  Alvin Kamara was snubbed due to a stacked NFC running back position. He even took to Twitter to vent minutes after the announcement.

Running backs Nick Chubb and Christian McAffrey were also snubbed. McAffery could very well get to 2,000 all-purpose yards without playing in the game. Chubb has 860 yards despite only having seven starts. Another notable snub was Indianapolis QB Andrew Luck. Luck is a likely favorite for comeback player of the year.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

With 3,951 yards and 34 touchdowns, Luck probably should’ve beat out Brady for a spot on the roster. Star kicker Justin Tucker was similar to Kamara, taking to Twitter in confusion after his snub. The kicker has made 28 of 30 field goal attempts this season, with both of his misses coming because of blocks.

Here’s a link to the full list of NFL rosters. Fans, coaches and players all have an equally weighted say in the selections, with each section of voting counting for one-third of the vote. This year’s Pro Bowl will be held at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on January 27 at 3 p.m. EST.

Andrew Luck Gets Huge Contract Extension

Andrew Luck visibly struggled in the Indianapolis Colts’ preseason matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night, and ESPN’s “First Take” hosts appeared divided over whether or not the quarterback is cause for concern.

Andrew Luck Struggles In Colts’ Preseason Loss

The Ravens beat the Colts 20-19 and Luck finished 6-of-13 in passing for 50 yards and one interception. The 28-year-old QB was also sacked twice in his first appearance in a game in over a year.

One of Luck’s sacks came at the hands of Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggsand the Colts QB later admitted to ESPN that he wasn’t completely upset with the tackle, partly because of how he landed on the field.

“I’m sort of happy to get sacked by Suggs, a legit sack,” Luck said after the game, according to ESPN. “I landed on my right elbow sort of reminiscent of how I injured my shoulder a couple of years ago [in Week 3 of the 2015 season]. I didn’t feel anything. Didn’t give it a second thought. That’s a big deal for me, being able to lose that thought bubble.”

SLIDESHOW: 30 Best Sports Instagrams!

ESPN “First Take” analysts Will Cain and Max Kellerman seemed split on Luck’s performance in Monday night’s matchup. Cain explained that although he likes the quarterback and wants to root for him, his passing and general playing against the Ravens was abysmal.

“I saw rustiness, I saw a guy that’s not ready, I saw a guy that needs to play more football,” Cain said of Luck. “He completed less than 50 percent of his passes, and he wasn’t event throwing them downfield! Only two of his attempts went further than 15 yards.”

He continued: “I like Andrew Luck. I like his introspection and self-awareness and that he works hard. I’m going to root for him but the truth of the matter is if you’re looking for positives from last night, they’re hard to find. You have to peer, you have to try hard.

Kellerman agreed with Cain’s assessment that Luck was “rusty” in his first game back from injury in 19 months. However, Kellerman also argued that Luck struggled mostly because he was put in difficult situations due to the lack of coordination and poor strategy of the Colts’ offense. Kellerman noted that the team’s offense is likely still facing issues this preseason because first-year head coach Frank Reich hasn’t completely devised an effective plan for every game situation.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

“First of all, there are only so many times you can get smoked by Terrell Suggs on your throwing shoulder in your life, so I would save those times for the regular season,” said Kellerman. “Yes Luck looked rusty, but mainly because he held the ball a little long at times. But I am not concerned about him.”

Kellerman continued: “Let me tell you what I am worried about. There a bunch of things on the Colts [starting with] the offensive line.”

He went on to specify that Indianapolis’s running game and play-calling were poor, which resulted in Luck finding himself in tough spots like ending up on third-down-and-long. Kellerman added that although the Cols have certainly improved in these areas over the last few years, he believes there is still a lot of work to be done. He also acknowledged that Reich’s play-calling could evolve throughout the preseason as the regular season approaches.

Given the highlights of Monday’s game, it seems that both Cain and Kellerman made valid points about Luck. The seventh-year QB still needs more practice on the strength and precision of his passing, but the Colts also must work to strategize their offensive game as well. Much of the latter will be the responsibility not just of the players and Reich but of offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni, who is also in his first year in the position.

Perhaps an adjustment period of a few weeks will thus be necessary for Indianapolis, as offensive coaches and players find their chemistry. How long will this learning curve take? Only time will tell.

Andrew Luck’s Thanksgiving did not go so well this year, as his team lost and he sat out with a concussion.

Andrew Luck Throws For 4 TDs, Colts Destroy Jets 41-10

However, he made up for it very nicely Monday night by throwing for four touchdowns to lead the Indianapolis Colts to a 41-10 road rout of the New York Jets.

“To get back out there and do some decent things, that’s fun,” said Luck, who tossed three of his touchdowns to Dwayne Allen. “Sitting out is no fun.”

The Colts (6-6) have won three of their last four games, while the helpless Jets (3-9) have dropped four straight. The hosts were booed by a very-empty MetLife Stadium almost from the outset.

After missing last weeks’ loss to Pittsburgh and clearing the NFL’s concussion protocol this weekend, he lifted Indianapolis to a tie for the lead in the AFC South with Tennessee and Houston. The Jets, meanwhile, remain fourth in the AFC East.

“The quarterback was outstanding,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said of Luck. “It’s always great to have your starting quarterback under center.”

Allen and T.Y. Hilton were Luck’s main targets as he went 22 of 28 for 278 yards, and they received little opposition from the Jets.

“It was a great night for everyone,” Allen said. “You hope that every night you go to play, it’s a night like that. It’s not realistic in the National Football League.

The win cam easy for the Colts. New York’s Jeremy Ross reached only his 11-yard line with the opening kickoff return. A three-and-out gave Luck the ball, and seven plays later, he hit a wide-open Allen for a 7-0 edge.

Indianapolis only needed four plays on its next drive, with Allen even more open for a 21-yard catch to make it 14-0. By then the Colts had gained 120 yards, the Jets 6.

The Colts ended up beating the Jets in yards 421 to 250. Indianapolis scored its most points since Week 13 of 2014; the Jets allowed their most since Week 8 of that season.

New York finally improved after Pat McAfee’s punt was downed at their 3. Matt Forte turned a short pass into a 40-yard gain with a dirty move on Rashaan Melvin, although that drive stalled and Nick Folk made a 38-yard field goal.

Allen set a career best with his third TD reception on a perfect 23-yard throw from Luck, and then the thrashing began.

Donte Moncrief added a 3-yard touchdown, the sixth straight game he has caught one. Hilton continually victimized cornerback Darrelle Revis and other Jets DBs, making nine catches for 146 yards. Hilton went over 1,000 yards for the fourth time in his five pro seasons.

The Jets are now 1-5 at home. Many fans are now calling for the firing of coach Todd Bowles, who led the Jets to a 10-6 record a year ago in his first season in charge.

“I thought for the first time this year, we got our (butt) handed to us,” Bowles said.

The Jets next visit the San Francisco 49ers (1-11) on Sunday, while the Colts will host Houston in a first-place division showdown that same day. “We know how big that game is,” Luck said.

Colts QB Andrew Luck Remains In Concussion Protocol

Quarterback Andrew Luck remains in the concussion protocol, head coach Chuck Pagano told reporters Tuesday.

Luck, who did not participate in Tuesday’s practice, suffered a concussion during the Colts’ 24-17 victory over Tennessee on Sunday. Indianapolis is set to host Pittsburgh on Thanksgiving.

The Colts (5-5) sit one game behind the Houston Texans in the tight AFC South, so the timing of Luck’s injury is terrible to say the least.

The Steelers routed the Colts the last two times they played.

Scott Tolzien will likely replace Luck as QB. Tolzien joined Indianapolis this year, and has been in the NFL as a backup for six seasons, and in his six appearances with the Green Bay Packers, produced a 1-5 TD-to-INT ratio and 67.1 passer rating.

Last year, when Luck was sidelined for nine games by injuries (shoulder, lacerated kidney), the Colts went 6-3. However, that was with since-retired veteran Matt Hasselbeck leading the offense.

In other NFL injury news as we head into Week 12, the Cincinnati Bengals placed running back Giovani Bernard on injured reserve with a torn ACL.

San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid was placed on IR with a torn biceps Tuesday. Reid posted a picture on Instagram saying he was out of surgery and that the procedure had gone well.

Second-year Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs missed practice Tuesday. The Vikings will visit the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving.

Andrew Luck Gets Huge Contract Extension

Colt’s QB Andrew Luck just finished his fourth NFL season. That means the 26 year-old Stanford product is eligible for his first big contract extension this coming offseason.

Colts owner Jim Irsay told WISH-TV, “Andrew is going to be here,” Irsay said. “I don’t know when that might be, but it’s just a matter of time before we talk about this new contract and agreed to. It’s going to be a big number. It’s going to be a shocking number, nine figures and probably a 20 (million) starting point per year, but again we will find the right number to get to.”

Luck has been widely projected to make the leap from good quarterback to franchise, All-Pro quarterback; unfortunately for Luck and the Colts, not to mention some fantasy owners, Luck only played in 7 games this year, throwing 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Around the NFL’s Conor Orr noted that there are several other quarterbacks who have gotten a nine figure deal:  Joe Flacco, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Tony Romo, Colin Kaepernick and Jay Cutler.  Those haven’t exactly panned out for those teams besides Rodgers and Newton, a lot of those guys have seen either injuries or play level diminish.

Luck had a very solid third year with 40 touchdown passes, but he still averaged an interception a game with 16, this was a big year for the Colts to see how Luck would perform before his contract extension.  Apparently the Colts have seen enough and they like what they see in their franchise quarterback.

Ryan Tannehill

The Miami Dolphins have officially signed Ryan Tannehill to a contract extension through the 2020 season, worth $96 million with $45 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Now, this is interesting on two fronts. First, Miami coach Joe Philbin publicly called out Tannehill last year for poor play, which resulted in the QB finishing the 2014 season strong. By the end, he threw for 4,045 yards with a completion percentage of 66.4, 27 touchdowns, only 12 interceptions and had a 92.8 passer rating.

Great numbers, but is he worth $100 million – especially with the team’s inability to get over the playoff slump – only one appearance in the last 13 seasons? This question is going to plague Miami, but they must have enough confidence in the eighth overall pick to give him this type of cash.

“We are thrilled that we were able to sign Ryan to an extension,” Dolphins vice president Mike Tannenbaum said in a press release. “He is an ascending talent, a team leader and checks all of the boxes you are looking for at the position.”

Furthermore, after over-spending on Ndamukong Suh and now Tannehill, GM Dennis Hickey has obviously not been shy about doling out the cash this offseason.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7K41FW6gDk

Secondly, this signing sets a precedent for the 2012 QB draft class. Out of all the guys taken that year, who could have really expected that Tannehill would be the first to get a contract extension? And what does this mean for arguably the best QB in league Andrew Luck, Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson and the injury prone Robert Griffin III?

Well, it certainly means that they will be paid more: if Tannehill got $96 million, then Luck’s figures just skyrocketed. Obviously, each case will be decided by cap space and how the money will impact the team, but it definitely raises the pay line for the quarterbacks in that class and in general. Heck, even Nick Foles could make more money because of this deal.

Lets just hope Tannehill lives up to the deal and is not the next Ryan Fitzpatrick.

During the offseason, longtime Texan Andre Johnson made the transition to division rival Indianapolis Colts. Overnight, he went from the worst QB situation to arguably the best, but you would not know that by his comments.

“He throws a great ball,” Johnson told ESPN. “Probably the best quarterback I’ve ever played with. I’m excited about the opportunity. I just can’t wait to continue to keep working with him and keep learning.”

The keyword in that phrase is probably. Now, the media, us included, tends to blow things out of proportion. Johnson has always been a very low-key guy and has only caught a few passes from Andrew Luck since joining the team. However, Luck is without a doubt the greatest QB the WR has ever played with, which makes me excited for Johnson’s bounce-back possibilities.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLk41LfHUpg

Lets just take a look at the revolving door of QBs during Johnson’s tenure in Houston. Since 2003, he has caught passes from eleven different starters: David CarrTony BanksDave RagoneMatt SchaubSage RosenfelsT.J. YatesMatt LeinartCase KeenumRyan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Mallett. And this does not even include Tom SavageRex Grossman and Jake Delhomme, who did not start but saw playing time.

Just look at this ragtag bunch: I honestly thought there would never be another situation where I would type the names Sage Rosnefels, Tony Banks or Dave Ragone. Meanwhile, he was still able to get 1,012 receptions, 13,597 yards and 64 touchdowns. That is a hall of fame feat alone.

So the normally mellow Johnson probably should have been a bit more ecstatic about actually having a set QB. Still, he called the Colts organization “a breath of fresh air,” as his move was more about winning a ring. And he believes that joining Indianapolis puts him in the best opportunity to do so.

Bad Lip Reading is back with their NFL 2015 edition: for those who do not know, this group takes things like sporting events and dubs in what it looks like the players or coaches are saying, hence the title.

This time they take footage from the 2014 NFL season, with the likes of Cam NewtonTony Romo and Matthew Stafford suffering from the wrath of these YouTubers: a personal favorite is Andrew Luck asking for a high five while saying “holla, we gon’ ball.” Between the voices and the absurd dialogue, this could put a smile on absolutely anyone’s face: including Bill Belichick.
