On Wednesday, the number one overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Zion Williamson, made a statement in the most highly anticipated debut since LeBron James’ first game in 2003. The Pelicans had previously held him out after the former Duke star suffered a torn meniscus in his knee during a November preseason game.

Listed at 6’6”, 284 pounds, Williamson was named a starter in Wednesday’s matchup with San Antonio and proceeded to play sporadically until he entered the game in the fourth quarter for a historic stretch.  With the Pelicans down nine, he caught a pass from Lonzo Ball and hit his first career three pointer from the top of the arc. He wasn’t done yet. In just three minutes of action, Williamson scored 17 straight points and went 4-4 from three point range becoming the first player to accomplish this feat in an NBA debut.

He was looking unstoppable but sat the final five minutes of the game due to a minutes restriction coach Alvin Gentry and vice president of baskeball operations David Griffin decided on prior to the game. The Spurs ended up winning 121-117.

“It’s not something that I think the coaching staff was overly comfortable with, just conceptually, but I also don’t really care,” Griffin said on Adrian Wojnarowski’s podcast. “We spent 14 weeks putting him position to have a sustainable future and we’re going to be very mindful of that moving forward.“

The day after his first game Gentry told the media,”He is fine, really. Practiced today and everything, so there was no soreness, and he said he was fine.”

Williamson will take the court again on Friday when the Pelicans host the Nuggets.

“There’s really no comparison to me. I try to add every level to my game,” Williamson told Wojnarowski. “My body is just built different. Some people try to look at it as a weakness, but I look at it as a blessing.People aren’t used to guarding this kind of size and I’m able to add a little finesse to my game so it has flavor and I’m a playmaker so I can create for my teammates and when I have to finish I’m gonna finish.”

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - JANUARY 06: Brandon Ingram #14 of the New Orleans Pelicans attempts a game-tying shot as Rudy Gobert #27 of the Utah Jazz defends during the second half at the Smoothie King Center on January 06, 2020 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Alvin Gentry was not pleased at all on Monday night after a no-call from the referees as time expired led to his New Orleans Pelicans sustaining a 128-126 loss to the Utah Jazz in regulation.

In the final seconds of the game, New Orleans forward Brandon Ingram snagged a rebound from an attempted 3-pointer from Bojan Bogdanovic and three Pelicans immediately called for a timeout: Gentry and guards Lonzo Ball and JJ Reddick. The officials did not grant a timeout and Ingram raced down the court to face Jazz center Rudy Gobert.

Gobert — the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year — jumped up and his left arm touched Ingram’s right arm. A foul call would have forced overtime, but instead, the referees signaled that the contest was over after they reviewed the clock due to a potential malfunction. The officials — who reportedly claimed they weren’t allowed to retroactively call a foul per NBA rules — were heavily booed by Pelicans fans at Smoothie King Center, and Gentry expressed in no uncertain terms after the game how upset he was with the no-call.

“All we did was exactly what we were supposed to do — took the ball, drove it hard at the basket — and then they determined it wasn’t a foul,” Gentry said, per ESPN. “End of game.”

Ingram told reporters after the game that he didn’t believe Gobert’s contact made any difference on the final outcome.

“I don’t really think it matters what I saw,” Ingram said. “The referee seen something different.”

New Orleans faced a similar situation last month in a 108-101 overtime loss against the Brooklyn Nets. The Pelicans might have won that game in regulation after Brooklyn committed a shot-clock violation with less than 3 seconds left that the officials didn’t penalize.

The Pelicans (12-25), who are second-to-last in the Western Conference, next host the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.

LeBron talks about Lakers trading for Anthony Davis

The Anthony Davis saga continues. Though he wasn’t able to join Lebron James out in Los Angeles and get the Lakers their seventeenth championship, the drama hasn’t stopped. First, Rich Paul of Klutch sports tried to maneuver a trade for Davis to the Lakers, leveraging the Boston Celtics‘ lack of salary cap flexibility until in June, the start of the new league year. But the New Orleans Pelicans management held on strong and Davis remained with the team as general manager Dell Demps wasn’t very intrigued by the Lakers young core. Then, the NBA stepped in and said that the Pelicans couldn’t rest Davis because it would hurt the sanctity of the game, also known as tanking. But drama for the Pels’ hasn’t stopped.

Most recently, the team parted ways with Demps. But more importantly, they’ve finally gotten a reason to sit Davis and preserve their biggest trade asset. On Thursday night, an MRI on Davis’ left shoulder revealed a muscle contusion.

During a Thursday night 131-122 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, Davis was injured in a collision at the end of the first half. He wasn’t seen on the bench after and reportedly left the arena with his agent, Paul.

Davis will still head to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the NBA All-Star game festivities but his participation is in doubt. He’ll seek treatment on his shoulder there in Charlotte and will see how he feels before deciding whether he can play on Sunday.

As for the rest of New Orleans, they’ve grown agitated with the Drama surrounding their star. New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters on Tuesday that he was done discussing trade rumors about Davis and that he wanted to focus on the players who have had to handle the last few chaotic weeks.

“I’m happy for all of them,” Gentry said. “Because to tell you the truth, this whole thing has been a dumpster fire…. We want guys to be professional and we want them to do this, but it’s hard for guys to go through what they’ve been through. And to be able to come out and beat a team of that quality, I’m happy for all the guys. I just thought they did a great job.”
