Norway emerged the winner of the 2018 Winter Olympics after taking 39 medals in Pyeongchang, and set a record while doing it.

2018 Winter Olympics final medal count

The Scandinavian country surpassed the record 37 medals USA racked up in Vancouver in 2010. Norway’s Marit Bjorgen became the most decorated Winter Olympian of all time after winning her fifth medal of the Games in the final event, the women’s cross-country skiing mass start.

Norway also won the most gold medals (14) at the Games in South Korea.

The Americans finished fourth with 23 medals, 9 of them gold for a weaker finish compared to previous Olympics. The U.S. Men’s curling team and the women’s hockey team were among the big winners in the final days of the Olympics. Germany was second with 31 medals, (14 gold) and Canada finished third with 29 (11 gold).

The Netherlands were fifth with 20 medals (8 gold), South Korea finished sixth with 17 (5 gold), and the Olympic Athletes from Russia were seventh with seventh with 17 (2 gold). Switzerland (15), France (15) and Sweden (14) rounded out the top ten nations.

Norway have now finished top of the medal table at eight Winter Games, but this is the first time since 2002. This year, they did it with a team of 109 athletes — 133 fewer than USA sent to Pyeongchang and 45 fewer than Germany.

Germany and Norway’s 14 golds match the record set by Canada in Vancouver in 2010.

Russian figure skater Alina Zagitova won her scandal-plagued country’s first gold medal at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Friday, and drew mixed reactions from viewers.

Alina Zagitova wins Russia’s first 2018 Olympics gold

The 15-year-old star — the second-youngest Olympic gold medalist in women’s figure skating — beat 18-year-old compatriot Evgenia Medvedeva for the top spot.

“I can’t believe I’m the champion,” said Zagitova. Tara Lipinski is the youngest female figure skater to win an Olympic title after she took gold in Japan in 1998 at age 15, 28 days younger than Zagitova.

As Zagitova stood on the podium, the Olympic anthem played instead of the Russian anthem, since the country has had several athletes banned from competing due to a long-running state-sponsored doping program. Its athletes are competing as the “Olympic Athletes from Russia” and carried the Olympic flag at the opening ceremony instead of its own flag.

Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond won bronze in the event.

Zagitova — who earned a total score of 239.57 — performed a jump-filled routine to “Don Quixote.” Some people praised her routine, while others noted that it was backloaded with several major jumps and other big moves, which allowed her to conserve her energy for the second half of the competition.

Some believed Medvedeva was the better skater and should have won gold:

Some defended Zagitova from the criticism about her backloaded jumps by citing competition rules:

Others felt this year’s figure skating event competitors didn’t find a good balance between athleticism and artistry when performing their routines.

Overall, there were also many people who voiced how impressive it was that both Russian skaters finished so well despite their young age.

The Americans finished ninth, 10th and 11th in the singles event, their worst finish since World War II. Mirai Nagasu became the first American woman to land a triple axel at any Olympics, and helped Team USA take bronze in the team event.

Winter Olympics 2018 Opening Ceremony

The last full day of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang (Saturday) will feature several exciting finals, as well as the closing ceremonies on Sunday.

2018 Winter Olympics Final weekend schedule

The men’s and women’s mass start speed skating finals, the men’s hockey final — which will pit Germany against the Olympic Athletes from Russia — are among the title events to watch.

The closing ceremony will begin Sunday at 6am local time, which means it will air at 8 pm EST on NBC. Jessie Diggins, who along with Kikkan Randall won the U.S.’s first ever Olympic gold in women’s cross-country skiing, will be Team USA’s flag-bearer for the ceremony.

The ceremony will last until around 10:30pm EST, and first daughter Ivanka Trump is set to lead the American delegation at the event. There has already been some backlash for choosing Ivanka for this role, just as there was severe criticism from some athletes about selecting Vice President Mike Pence to lead the delegation when the Olympics began two weeks ago.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will also reportedly attend the closing ceremony.

There could also be some celebrity appearances, including artists performing songs, as there have been in previous Olympic closing ceremonies.

The Olympic torch will also, per tradition, be handed off to Beijing, China which will host the next Winter Olympics in 2022.

2014 Paralympic Winter Games - Closing Ceremony

The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang have been filled with excitement, and the standings continue to change just two days before the Games end.

2018 Winter Olympics medal count Day 14

Norway still leads the medals race with 37, two more (both silver) than they had on Thursday. Canada has jumped to second with 27 medals (three more than Thursday, one of each kind) to pass Germany, who dropped to third after winning just one medal Friday (a bronze) to bring their total to 26.

Team USA is still fourth with 21 after gaining no hardware on Friday (Pyeongchang time). Canada won gold and silver in women’s ski cross on Friday.

The Netherlands are fifth with 18 (one more than Thursday, a gold) and France are sixth with 15, same as Thursday.

The Olympic Athletes from Russia jumped from eighth to seventh after winning their first gold in figure skating on Thursday, to bring their total to 14. (The Russians also won a silver and lost two bronze after two curlers were caught doping).

Host nation South Korea won a bronze to bring their total to 12, but fell from ninth to tenth.

Here is the full medal count of the competition in South Korea entering Friday (U.S. Time):

The U.S. Women’s Hockey Team have long held a fierce rivalry with Canada, and now they have made Olympic history with a title victory in Pyeongchang.

U.S. Women’s Hockey vs. Canada score Olympics 2018 Final

The American ladies defeated their Northern rivals 3-2 in a shootout to capture the team’s first gold medal in 20 years. Team USA had lost to Canada in women’s hockey in the previous two Olympic finals in Sochi (2014) and Vancouver (2010), but this year it was a goal from Jocelyne Lamoueux-Davidson and a save from goalie Maddie Rooney in the sixth round of the shootout that helped secure the win for the Americans.

“It’s going to be part of our legacy,” said captain Hilary Knight, who scored the first goal on Wednesday evening. “The things we have gone through together on and off the ice, the characters, the group of women we have in this room, it’s quite incredible.”

Lamoureux-Davidson deftly maneuvered the puck to trick Canada goalie Shannon Szabados on the game-winning goal, and later revealed how much the title meant to her.

“It’s been a dream come true to do this,” said Lamoureux-Davidson. “We have pushed each other since we were little and our brothers have kicked our butts along the way. To contribute the way we did today, we have prepared for this and what we have gone through the last month.”

Her twin sister, Monique Lamoureux-Morando, also played a major role in the win by scoring the Americans’ second goal of the evening that tied it up 2-2 and forced overtime. Lamoureux-Morando sped down the ice on a breakaway after Rooney stopped a 2-on-1 rush with just over six minutes remaining, and fired a shot into the upper-right corner of the net.

The U.S. women’s loss to Canada in the 2014 Olympic title game was particularly heartbreaking, as the Americans blew a two-goal lead in the final minutes and lost in sudden-death overtime.

Knight’s goal on Wednesday night came late in the first period, when she deflected Sidney Morin’s shot on the power play to giver her team a 1-0 lead.

Marie-Philip Poulin and Haley Irwin each scored goals for Canada. Meghan Agosta and Melodie Daoust scored in the shootout, though Agosta missed on her second attempt in the shootout, Canada’s final shot of the game.

Canada was seeking its fifth straight Olympic title.

Rooney, 20, who was less than a year old when the American hockey women last won Olympic gold in 1998, put on a stellar performance on Wednesday, stopping 29 shots in regulation and saving four more in the shootout.

Shortly after the victory, somebody briefly altered Rooney’s — a Minnesota-Duluth player — Wikipedia page by changing her position from goalkeeper to “United States Secretary of Defense.” Sounds like a fitting title for the youngster.

Team USA has broken its deadlock at fifth place in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and climbed to fourth.

Winter Olympics 2018 medal count

The U.S. won five medals Wednesday, including two gold — one of them was the women’s hockey team, who defeated Canada in the final — to bring their total to 21. The Americans now have 8 gold medals, and surpassed the Netherlands, who are fifth after winning just one medal (a gold) to increase their total hardware to 17.

Norway still leads the race with 35 (13 gold), two more (one silver, one bronze) than Tuesday. Germany (25) and Canada (24) are second and third, respectively.

American cross-country skiers Jessica Diggins and Kikkan Randall have made Olympic history for Team USA after winning the women’s team event in Pyeongchang on Wednesday.

Team USA wins gold women’s cross-country skiing

The pair secured the U.S.’s first gold medal in the sport. Diggins, 26, passed Norway’s Marit Bjoergen — the most decorated Winter Olympian of all time — on the final lap and out-sprinted Sweden’s Stina Nilsson to cross the finish line.

As second-time Olympian Diggins fell to the ground, 35-year-old Randall jumped on her and their teammates loudly cheered from behind the wall guarding the entrance to the course.

Team USA had actually never won any type of medal in women’s cross-country skiing prior to Wednesday’s race.

The only American to previously win an Olympic medal in the sport was Bill Koch, who earned silver in the 30km race during the 1976 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria.

Sweden won silver and Norway took bronze in the women’s competition Wednesday. Bjoergen’s record 14th Olympic medal broke her tie with Norwegian biathlete Ole Einar Bjourndalen for the most all-time medals at the Winter Games.

“In that last corner, I don’t know what I was thinking, except, ‘Go! Go! Go!,’” said Diggins, a Minnesota native. “You’re going to have to dig really deep. I was in a lot of pain, for sure. But when your team is counting on you, you’ve got to give it everything you have.’’

With Diggins skiing the anchor leg, she and Utah native Randall completed the six-lap race in 15 minutes, 56.47 seconds, 0.19 of a second ahead of Nilsson.

“If there’s anybody I’d have 100 percent faith in coming down that finishing stretch as fast as possible, it’s Jessie,’’ Randall said. “It was just a wonderful feeling to take it all in and watch it happen.’’

Randall finished ninth in the Olympic Sprint at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, the best Olympic result ever in cross-country skiing by an American woman.

Lindsey Vonn Ends Season After Knee Fractures

Lindsey Vonn won bronze on Wednesday in Pyeongchang in her final downhill race, and both her and many other people’s emotions were running high in the event’s aftermath.

Lindsey Vonn 2018 Winter Olympics downhill final

The 33-year-old veteran Olympian was asked a question about how her late grandfather — who died last fall and whose initials Vonn added to her helmet — inspired her, and couldn’t avoid shedding tears during the interview with NBC’s Heather Cox.

“It’s been really hard for me not to get emotional for so many reasons, especially because of my grandfather,” said Vonn. “I wanted to win so much because of him. [Cries,] But I still think I made him proud. Our family never gives up and I never gave up. I kept working hard. I’m really proud of this medal and I know he is too.”

Vonn of course added that she wished she had won gold, although one person was more explicit in his disappointment: her father.

“It’s great skiing, but it reminds me of something that Buddy Werner used to say,” the athlete’s father Alan Kildow told USA Today Sports, referring to a skier from the 1950s. “He said there’s two places in the race, first and last, and I only want one of them.”

Kildow added he believed his daughter should have been more aggressive.

“Just little spots, little spots,” he said. “Just not quite risking enough. Not straightening the line out, just the ski was little… not quite caving in some places like it should have. But a great result.”

Vonn is not finished in Pyeongchang, however: she will compete in the alpine combined on Wednesday night (Thursday in South Korea).

“It’s been a fun ride and I hope tomorrow I can pull something out of the hat,” she said. “It’s sad, it’s my last downhill. I wish I could keep going, you know. I have so much fun and I love what I do, but my body probably can’t take another four years,” she added.

The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang no longer seem to be a tight race among the top-ranking nations.

2018 Winter Olympics medals race

Norway still comfortably leads the Games with 33 total medals (13 gold), while second-place Germany has 24 medals (12 gold). Canada is third with 21 (9 gold).

Team USA is still fifth behind the fourth-place Netherlands after winning four medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) on Tuesday. Both countries have the same number of total medals (16) and gold (6).

France is sixth with 14 medals, and the Olympic Athletes from Russia are seventh with 13. Japan (11), Austria (10) and host country South Korea (9) round out the top ten.

Here is the full medal count entering Wednesday (which is now Thursday in Pyeongchang due to the 14-hour time difference), Day 12 of the Olympics:

Team USA Beats Russia 4-3 in World Junior Hockey Semifinals

The U.S. Men’s Hockey Team have reached the Olympic quarterfinals after defeating Slovakia 5-1, and their next opponent won’t be easy.

U.S. Men’s Hockey vs. Slovakia score 2018 Olympics

The Americans will face the Czech Republic on Wednesday. The Czechs won their first three games, including a shootout victory over Canada. The U.S., meanwhile, only claimed one of their three preliminary games, also against Slovakia and scored four goals in those matches.

Coach Tony Granato’s squad also lost to Slovenia (3-2 in overtime) and to the Olympic Athletes from Russia (4-0).

Harvard forward and Boston Bruins prospect Ryan Donato has been a standout in Pyeongchang: the 21-year-old scored both of Team USA’s goals in their 2-1 first-round victory over Slovakia. His four total goals are tied for the tournament lead.

Donato is one of many college-aged players on the U.S. men’s roster whom Granato may rely on for the quarterfinal matchup. University of Denver forward Troy Terry, an Anaheim Ducks prospect, had three assists against Slovenia, and Boston University’s Jordan Greenway has also played well.

In the third period on Tuesday, Donato took a shoulder to the jaw from 6-foot-4 Slovakian defenseman Michal Cajkovski, (who was ejected), and didn’t miss a shift despite a bloody nose that he believed might be broken. On the subsequent play, Donato set the screen on James Wisniewski’s 5-on-3 power-play goal.

Donato also opened the scoring 1:36 into the middle period and netted his own power-play goal. Terry had three assists and Mark Arcobello and Garrett Roe scored the U.S.’s other two goals. Goalie Ryan Zapolski recorded 22 saves in his second Olympic victory.

The team’s quarterfinal against the Czech Republic will begin at 10:10pm EST on Tuesday, and will air on CNBC. The game can also be streamed on NBCOlympics.com.

Ziga Jeglic, a Slovenian hockey player, was suspended from the Olympics for doping in the big controversy of the day. The 29-year-old missed his team’s 2-1 loss to Norway in the qualifying round. Jeglic’s teammates said they were “shocked” by the news.”

The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang have proved a thrilling race that is tight among certain nations, and here is the medal count entering Tuesday.

Winter Olympics 2018 Medal Count Day 11

Norway still leads with 29 medals (11 gold), and Germany (23 total, 11 gold) and Canada (19 total, 8 gold) follow in second and third, respectively.

Team USA is still sixth like it was Monday, although it has two more medals (bronze) to raise their total to 12 (5 gold). American Brita Sigourney finished third in the women’s ski halfpipe, and siblings Alex and Maia Shibutani won bronze in the ice dance free skate final Tuesday.

France has jumped to fifth from eighth with 13 medals (5 gold), winning three medals Tuesday: a gold and two silvers. Martin Fourcade edged Germany’s Simon Schempp to win the men’s 15-kilometer mass biathlon by a tiny margin.

The Olympic Athletes from Russia, who were fifth on Monday, are now seventh after winning no medals Tuesday.

Canadian ice dancing pair Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are known for creating magic nearly every time they skate, and now they have set a new Olympic record in Pyeongchang.

Scott Moir, Tessa Virtue 2018 Winter Olympics record score

Virtue and Moir scored 83.67 points Monday for their dazzling Latin-themed routine to break their own previous record of 82.68. They edged out France’s Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, a dynamic duo the Canadians lost to at the Nagoya Grand Prix Final last December and who danced to an Ed Sheeran set on Monday that had the audience in South Korea clapping.

“It feels great but even better than the world record is the feeling we had when we ended the program,” said Virtue. “We’re really pleased with that performance. On the world’s biggest stage when the pressure is mounting, it’s nice to be able to deliver like that.”

Papadakis and Cizeron scored 81.93 points to win silver.

Moir and Virtue have two individual Olympic medals, gold from Vancouver in 2010 and silver from Sochi in 2014, as well as a 2014 team silver to accompany last week’s team gold.

“We’ve marked them as our rivals for a long time, from the start of this comeback,” Moir said of Papadakis and Cizeron, who share the same coaches as him and Virtue. “We watched their worlds when we weren’t there and we have nothing but respect for these two.”

Americans Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue finished third with a 77.75 score that was just enough to put them above compatriots Maia and Alex Shibutani by 0.02 points.

The free skate takes place Tuesday before the women’s event starts a day later.

Virtue, 28, and Moir, 30, have been competing together for 20 years. They are not romantically tied (many fans wish they were), although they have said they have a great friendship and working relationship. Moir recently joked that he and Virtue used to date — when he was 10 and the pair had just begun skating together.

“It was romantic in the beginning,” Moir said. He and Virtue were Canada’s flag-bearers at this year’s Olympics.

One of the Canadian pair’s dance choreographies was deemed to sexually suggestive to be permitted to use during the 2018 Olympics.

Virtue recently posted this adorable throwback of the duo skating as young children:

The International Olympic Committee has stated American Women hockey goalies playing at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang will not need to remove the Statue of Liberty from their masks, despite what some may have been led to believe.

U.S. Women’s hockey goalies Olympic masks news

Reports began surfacing early Tuesday that the goalkeepers would be forced to get rid of the U.S. emblem, but the IOC quickly dismissed those claims in a tweet Tuesday morning:

The IOC has rules that dictate teams should not include any sort of political symbols — including national anthem lyrics or other political statements or slogans related to national identity — on their uniforms. However, it is clear some emblems are permissible, and all the details regarding which drawings or statements are deemed illicit and which are allowed are not known.

Thus, U.S. women’s hockey’s two goalies, Nicole Hensley and Alex Rigsby, can keep Lady Liberty on their masks while competing in South Korea.

The IOC has sanctioned hockey goalie masks at previous Olympics, however. At the Sochi Games in 2014, USA goalkeeper Jessie Vetter had to remove a reference to the U.S. Constitution from the backplate of her helmet. Canadian-born South Korean goalie Matt Dalton was forced to erase a drawing of legendary Korean naval commander Admiral Yi Sun-shin ahead of this year’s Pyeongchang Games.

Before the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, the IOC asked USA goalie Ryan Miller to remove the words “Matt Man” from his helmet. The phrase referred to Miller’s cousin Matt, who had died of cancer at age 18. The committee also has a rule against the promotion of individuals.

The U.S. hockey women routed the Olympic Athletes from Russia 5-0 in Tuesday’s preliminary round game. The American ladies defeated Finland 3-1 in their first preliminary round game on Sunday. They next face Canada on Thursday at 10:10 pm EST.

Given the heavily politically charged world climate, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that some teams may have wished to add a statement to their uniforms but were ultimately prohibited by the IOC.

A lot of pressure was placed on Chloe Kim ahead of the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics, but the teenage American snowboarder powered though it to impress.

Chloe Kim Winter Olympics snowboard halfpipe performance

Kim, a 17-year-old from Southern California, scored a 93.75 on her first run after landing a backside air, frontside 1080, cab 270, frontside 900, McTwist and frontside inverted 720.

That run gave her a giant lead over the rest of the field. Then on her victory lap, Kim stomped both of her 1080s, then landed the rest of her run. She ended up with a final score of 98.25. Kim said she tried not getting too emotional, but ultimately couldn’t help herself.

“I was like tearing up and wanted to cry, but I just knew I wasn’t going to be happy, even if I went home with the gold, if I knew I could do better,” Kim said of her decision to attempt the back-to-back 1080s. “So that third run was really just to prove to myself that I deserved it and did everything I could. I’m so happy.”

Kim has been at the top of world snowboarding for a while. She was too young to compete at Sochi in 2014, but at age 15 she became the first female snowboarder ever to land back-to-back 1080-degree spins. The combo gave her a perfect score of 100, a feat only matched by snowboarding great Shaun White.

Kim drew some confusion and funny reactions when she tweeted early Monday morning (US EST time) that she had a craving for ice cream.

“Aren’t you competing right now?” replied one user.

China’s Liu Jiayu, a three-time Olympian, won silver in the women’s snowboard halfpipe event. Arielle Gold of Team USA won bronze with an 85.75 on the strength of a final run that included the frontside 1080.

Kim also took the time to celebrate with her parents, who emigrated to the US from South Korea in 1982 with just $800 cash and a burning desire to achieve the “American dream.” Kim’s father Jong Jin Kim appeared on NBC’s Today Show on Monday.

He explained that to him, Chloe Kim is the American dream.

Chloe has said she is grateful for her family’s love and support. After winning the gold, the youngster admitted she was unable to fathom “leaving your life behind and chasing this dream with your kid.”

Watch Kim finish her final run and take the podium:

Snowboarder Jamie Anderson wins gold at 2018 Winter Olympics

Jamie Anderson of Team USA is the gold medallist in the women’s slope-style snowboarding competition for the second consecutive Winter Olympics, after putting on an impressive performance in Pyeongchang on Monday morning.

Jamie Anderson Winter Olympics 2018 performance news

The 27-year-old Californian is now the first female snowboarder to win two Olympic golds, after she won in Sochi in 2014, and scored an 83.00 during the first of her two runs.

Sunday’s qualifying round of the event in South Korea was canceled due to high winds, although all 26 riders eventually advanced to the final round. There was a roughly 75-minute delay before the finals began.

“I took it one feature at a time and adapted with the weather,” said Anderson. “I felt strong wind as soon as I dropped in, but I knew I had to go with it. It’s not always going to be perfect.”

Laurie Blouin of Canada won silver, and Finland’s Enni Rukajarvi finished third.

U.S. snowboarding head coach Mike Jankowski praised Anderson for her performance despite the brutal conditions.

“Watching your competitors struggle in the wind can make it more difficult to be in the moment and confident,” he said. “This was a challenging day, but Jamie accepted that this was what was happening, kept her head in the game and put one down.”

Among Anderson’s impressive moves was adapting a cab 900 to a cab 540 while in midair. Jankowski is an avid windsurfer who has spent much time on the water and in the mountains. On Monday, he used visual cues like trees and then timed the wind gusts to determine how long it would take for them to travel from those spots to the jumps on the course.

“The other coaches held the riders in the start and waited for me to communicate that there was a lull in the wind before they dropped them,” Jankowski said. “For every big gust of wind, there’s a lull behind it. There’s a backside to the gusts. So we were timing the start so we would hit the lulls, and we were able to do that with quite a few of the riders. It’s not a perfect science, but that was huge for us.”

Anderson’s gold medal victory followed that of 17-year-old fellow slope-style snowboarder Red Gerard, who took home Team USA’s first gold medal in the men’s event on Sunday. Gerard made headlines when he cursed in awe following his big win.

“Holy f—!” yelled Gerard as he embraced his friends. NBC was unable to censor the young American in time.
