Suspended Raiders LB Aldon Smith Named Suspect In Domestic Violence Incident

San Francisco police have named Aldon Smith of the Oakland Raiders a suspect in a domestic violence case involving his ex-girlfriend.

The 28-year-old linebacker is currently suspended from the NFL due to several offenses of the league’s substance abuse problem. Smith has faced several other off-the-field issues in recent years: a hit-and-run, possession of illegal assault weapons.

According to several reports, Smith got involved in altercation on Sunday and fled the scene before police arrived and identified him. The victim in the case did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

TMZ.com reported that Smith checked himself into rehab following the incident upon his own request, something the linebacker’s fiancee told the website. Smith’s fiancee also allegedly said she is concerned for his well-being.

Smith was selected by the San Francisco 49ers as a first-round pick in 2011, and recorded 44 sacks in 50 games with the team. However, he was released after his third DUI arrest in 2015. He was later signed by Oakland but hasn’t played since 2015.

The player’s reinstatement to the NFL will likely be contingent on good behavior and adherence to the league’s substance abuse policy.

Smith also posted this strange photo of a pavement on Instagram Sunday night as police were searching for him:
