Super Bowl LIII Coaches Sean McVay And Bill Belichick Texted Throughout 2018 Season

Knowing Sean McVay is the hottest resume item in the NFL. For the last eight months, the Rams’ quarterback coach was probably considered for some head coaching jobs just because he knew McVay.

Belichick & McVay talked during season

But Bill Belichick certainly doesn’t need the boost. That’s why it’s odd that the coaching legend texted the Rams coach throughout the season. The two will face off at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta on Sunday.

McVay announced that he chatted with Belichick during last year’s Combine and the two had a texting relationship during the season. “This is wild: This season, he has basically texted me after every one of our games. After we beat Minnesota in September, he texted, ‘Man, you guys are really explosive and impressive and fun to watch. Congratulations—keep it rolling.’ For him to even take the time to say congrats, it’s pretty cool”, McVay said.

It’s hard to imagine the two texting. The New England coach is twice McVay’s age and seems to hate technology. He’s routinely throwing the Microsoft Surface tablets that the NFL loves as a sponsor. But it seems that there’s mutual respect between the two.

“I’ve gotten to know Bill — we talked at the combine last year — so that’s been cool,” McVay said. “He was really great in the conversation we had, really enlightening.”

Maybe this is Belichick playing the long-con with McVay. He routinely compliments the teams he’s facing but has never done so throughout an entire season.

Last week Belichick said: “I have a ton of respect for Sean. I think he’s done a great job in the two years he’s been with the Rams. His teams have performed at an extremely high level. They’re very consistent. They’re well-coached. He has a great scheme. The players execute it on a consistent basis at a very high level,” he said.

Belichick continued: “He’s got a great coaching staff. Offense, defense, special teams — they’re good in every area. Coach Fassel, Coach Phillips, a great staff. Coach Fisch I know is also an important part of that staff. The coaching, the playing, the consistency — Coach McVay’s done a tremendous job out there. He’s got a great team. They’ll be very hard to beat, but we’re going to compete against them and do the best that we can to be ready to go a week from Sunday. I think he’s done an outstanding job. I have a ton of respect for the way his team has played and how well they play and what he’s accomplished out there, and in his entire career, but as a head coach in the last two years.”

Belichick also talked about his admiration for Rams punter Johnny Hekker. It’s hard to imagine that Belichick’s resume reads “1) knows Sean McVay 2) 7 Super Bowl rings, 12 Super Bowl appearances” but he’s known to talk to coaches throughout the league. Though don’t expect their relationship to get in between either coach and winning the game.
