The game was tied 2-2 through regulation and overtime. During double OT, the teams were playing four-on-four. Dorgan scored on a breakaway. Even Portsmouth’s athletic director admitted it was an emotional moment.

“It was just really emotional,” Michael Lunney said. “And I think the whole state needed that after what happened last month.”

Blackstone Valley Schools is a co-op of several different schools. Rhode Island is a small state. This means that many high schools do not have enough players to form a team in most sports outside of the major ones like football and basketball. Blackstone Valley Schools comprises students from St. Raphael Academy, North Providence High School, Johnston High School, and Providence Country Day School. They play their home games in Lynch Arena in Pawtucket.

This game advanced Blackstone Valley Schools to the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division II boys ice hockey championship. They will play Lincoln High School on March 18. The game will be played in the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence. Amica Mutual Pavilion opened as the Providence Civic Center in 1972. They rebranded as the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in 2001, then changed to their current name in 2022. The Providence Friars, a Division I college team, and the American Hockey League team, the Providence Bruins, also play there.
