Simone Biles claimed her seventh national all-around gymnastics title in Fort Worth, TX this past weekend. This accomplishment for Biles ties the record for most titles by any American in the event. The five-time Olympic medalist earned a score of 119.650 with her routine set to a song from “Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift,” and within this routine, she completed a move that has yet to be seen before, ‘The Biles’. This routine put Biles ahead of the runner-up, Sunisa Lee by five points.
With this title win, Biles passes Clara Schroth Lomady‘s previous record of six and ties the record held by Alfred Jochim for most titles by an American. The magnitude of the win did not seem to overwhelm Biles. “I feel like I did try to enjoy it because it could be one of the last championships that I’ll attend,” she said. “But it’s also the road to Tokyo, and after this we have trials, so we just have to really embrace the moment.”
Biles is hinting at the fast-approaching Summer Olympics in Tokyo, less than 50 days away. Biles was named to the Olympic team trials taking place from June 24-27 in St. Louis, MO. The top two finishers in this three-day event will automatically qualify for the Summer Olympics, with two more gymnasts being added and a fifth member qualifying as an individual. Both Biles and Lee are favorites after their outstanding recent performances. Biles’ training partner Jordan Chiles is also a favorite to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
The impressive list of accolades for Biles continues to grow and shows no signs of slowing down. Biles could become the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic championships in more than 50 years at the upcoming Summer Olympics.
