Shayne Gostisbehere Helps Flyers Edge Hurricanes In Overtime

Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere made it to the NHL at the right time. In the inaugural season of three-on-three overtime, the rookie has already scored three goals in the extra session; his latest tally on Tuesday night gave Philadelphia a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ghost, as the defenseman is known, scored the winner emphatically on his forehand shot; he was assisted by a silky backhand pass from Jacob Voracek. The Czech winger finished the night with a goal and two assists.

“Three-on-three is built for [Gostisbehere]” Voracek said. “He’s a great skater with a great shot. He’s smart as well and knows when to jump in.”

The rookie also scored an overtime winner the first time the teams met in November. “It’s definitely fun, for sure,” he said. “It’s the guys around me. [Voracek] with the pass — he’s one of the best in the NHL for a reason.”

Flyers coach Dave Hakstol succinctly agreed with both players, noting that Gostisbehere has “been effective in OT, no question” and that the overtime assist was “a hell of a play” by Voracek.

On the Carolina side, Jeff Skinner scored his second hat trick of the past three games in the loss.
