Sha’Carri Richardson Apologizes After Testing Positive For Marijuana

Sha’Carri Richardson is out of the Tokyo Olympics after she confirmed a positive test for marijuana. Richardson is a star runner for the United States and was a critical piece in securing gold for the U.S in the 100-meter race for the first time since 1996. She expressed deep regret about her positive test, appearing on the Today Show on NBC.

“As much as I’m disappointed I know that when I step on the track I represent not only myself, I represent a community that has shown great support, great love,” Richardson said. “I apologize for the fact that I didn’t know how to control my emotions or deal with my emotions during that time.”

The suspension will last for one month, according to the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Richardson admitted that her use of the drug was due to the passing of her biological mother.

“Who are you? Who am I to tell you how to cope when you’re dealing with a pain or you’re dealing with a struggle that you’ve never experienced before or that you never thought you’d have to deal with? Who am I to tell you how to cope? Who am I to tell you you’re wrong for hurting?”

Based on the backdating method used to determine the 30-day ban, Richardson is technically eligible for the 4×100 race in the Olympics, should the U.S. Track and Field Association select her for the event.

Richardson is still staying optimistic despite the unwelcomed news.

“This is just one Games. I’m 21, I’m very young,” she said. “I have plenty of Games left in me to compete in and I have plenty of talent that backs me up, because everything I do comes from me naturally. No steroid, no anything.”
