Norway coach Ståle Solbakken has defended his decision to pull star striker Erling Haaland during extra time of Saturday’s World Cup quarterfinal, a substitution that left fans stunned as his team chased a late equalizer against England in Miami.

England won the match 2-1 in extra time, with Andreas Schjelderup opening the scoring for Norway in the 36th minute before Jude Bellingham leveled the score just ahead of halftime and then netted the winner three minutes into extra time. Haaland was withdrawn late in extra time with the match still hanging in the balance, replaced by Crystal Palace forward Jørgen Strand Larsen, who was unable to match his teammate’s scoring threat as Norway’s push for an equalizer came up short.

Speaking after the match, Solbakken said the call was straightforward because Haaland had nothing left to give, adding that, in hindsight, he probably should have made the change 10 minutes earlier. The coach pointed to a mix of fatigue and a second-half “dead leg” injury, compounded by brutal playing conditions — the heat index in South Florida topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the match.

Haaland himself acknowledged afterward that his energy had drained away as the game wore on.

It was an uncharacteristically quiet outing for the Manchester City forward, who managed just two shots, only one on target, and largely went silent after the first half. That marked a sharp contrast to the rest of his tournament, in which he had scored seven goals across his first four appearances and established himself as one of the competition’s most dangerous attackers.

Despite the disappointing finish, Solbakken praised Haaland’s overall World Cup, calling it a fantastic showing that helped carry Norway to its best tournament run in years. Haaland lingered on the field after the final whistle to salute Norwegian supporters and shared an embrace with Bellingham, his former Borussia Dortmund teammate, before making his way off the pitch for the final time this tournament.

Norway’s quarterfinal appearance still marked a milestone for a program that has struggled to make deep tournament runs in recent decades. England, meanwhile, advances to the semifinals under manager Thomas Tuchel, where the Three Lions will face the winner of the Argentina-Switzerland quarterfinal for a place in the final.

What a 48 hours in Madrid.

Two days after winning their 15th Champions League with a win over Borussia Dortmund and finishing first in La Liga, the years-long saga with Kylian Mbappe ended. Los Blancos officially welcomed the French star by announcing his arrival across social media. The 25-year-old Frenchman moves to Madrid after seven years with Paris Saint-Germain.

In 2022, Mbappe almost left for Spain for the first time, but PSG convinced him to stay. According to Fabrizio Romano, he signed a two-year contract extension with a player option in the 2024-2025 season. At the beginning of this past season, the striker told PSG representatives he would not extend his contract and leave the club as a free agent next summer.

Furious, the club benched him to begin the year, but he worked his way back into the squad. After the Paris season ended in the middle of May, Mbappe and Madrid ironed out the details of his contract, making his departure official on Monday. He signed a five-year deal earning just over $16 million per season and a $163 million signing bonus spread over the deal’s life.

Mbappe looks to be the missing piece in a Madrid team teeming with young talent. Four of their ten outfield players in the Champions League final are 25 years old or younger, including the striker partnership of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, who will move to the wings next season with Mbappe joining them.

Meanwhile, PSG is left to pick up the pieces. At the end of the 2023 season, the club had one of the best-attacking trios the world has ever seen, with Neymar, Leo Messi and Mbappe. All three are gone one year later, and little money is being recouped for their departures. The club finished first in Ligue 1 and was knocked out in the Champions League Semi-finals by Dortmund.

For the first time since 2012, Chelsea will hoist the trophy as winners of the Champions League.

The team defeated Manchester City by a score of 1-0 on Saturday, marking their third victory over Man City this year. The team was led by a new coach, Thomas Tuchel, who took over the position of manager in January, beginning his tenure with a 14-game winning streak. Tuchel had previously been the manager of Paris Saint-Germain, where he finished runner-up in the 2019-2020 Champions League.

The decisive goal in the match was scored by Kai Havertz in the 42nd minute, his first ever goal in the Champions League. Chelsea signed Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen last summer for £88 million. On the flip side, the most dominant offense in the premier league, Man City, was befuddled by Chelsea’s defensive strategies, getting only one shot on goal the entire match. City manager Pep Guardiola chose a more attack-heavy starting 11, benching some of his defensive midfielders at the beginning of the match.

Also of note in the match was the presence of Christian Pulisic on Chelsea, who entered the game in the second half as a sub. Pulisic became only the the second male U.S. international, after Borussia Dortmund forward Jovan Kirovski in 1997, to be on a team that won the Champions League. This marks Chelsea’s second ever Champions League trophy, which required defeated both perennial contender Real Madrid in the semifinals as well as defending Premier League champions Manchester City in the title match.

The European Super League faced backlash shortly after the announcement of its formation on Monday. Football governing bodies and figures condemned the emerging competition.

Twelve clubs are currently members of the competition. The participating clubs are Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Juventus, A.C. Milan, Atletico Madrid, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. The chairman of the competition is Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez and the vice-chairmen are Liverpool director John W. Henry, Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke, Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli and Manchester United co chairman Joel Glazer. 

German and French clubs that include FC Bayern Munchen, Paris Saint Germain and Borussia Dortmund all announced that they will not participate in the The Super League. 

Manchester United legend Gary Neville condemned the competition. “The proposal will get kicked out because the fans will hate it, the governments will hate it, FIFA will hate, UEFA will hate it, the Premier League have come out already and say they hate it, you’ll hate it, I’ll hate it. And they are so disconnected from reality to think they could put this forward at any time, let alone now,” Neville said. “Honesty, I’d say I’ve got no words for them but I’ve had a lot of words.”

Neville claimed that the clubs who signed up for the Super League competition “should be deducted points” as a consequence. Neville also mentioned his former club Manchester United should be one of the clubs who should be deducted points for joining. 

UEFA president Aleksandr Ceferin stated, “I cannot stress more strongly UEFA and the footballing world are united against the disgraceful, self-serving, proposals we have seen, fueled purely by greed. These are so-called big clubs, it is clear that the big clubs of today were not always big clubs. Juventus were in Serie B, Man United before Sir Alex Ferguson was I don’t know where.”

Ceferin added that the participating clubs will face sanctions and players could be banned from playing the European Championship and World Cup. 

The 2020-21 UEFA Champions League last 16 draw was announced on Dec. 14 in Nyon, Switzerland. 

The winning 16 teams from the group stages were separated into two pots. One-pot included the teams that finished on the top of their group, which are Bayern Munich, Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Liverpool, Paris Saint Germain, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund. The other pot included the teams that finished in second place, which are Atletico Madrid, S.S.C Lazio, Atalanta, FC Barcelona, Borussia Monchengladbach, Porto, Sevilla and RB Leipzig.

Teams from the first pot were drawn against teams in the second pot. The exceptions are that teams from the same group stage or league cannot be drawn against one another. 

Bundesliga club R.B. Leipzig will face current Premier League champions, Liverpool. Paris Saint Germain will face FC Barcelona, a game that will see former FC Barcelona superstar Neymar Jr. play against his former team. 

Portuguese club Porto will face current Serie A champions Juventus. Reigning Europa League champions Sevilla will face Borussia Dortmund. Serie A club S.S.C Lazio will face current Champions League champions Bayern Munich. La Liga club Atletico Madrid will face Premier League club Chelsea F.C. 

Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach will face Manchester City. Current La Liga champions Real Madrid will face Serie A club Atalanta. The Galacticos are up against the Serie A’s most exciting attacking line. 

Each game will have two legs, which means that each team is scheduled to play at home and away. The first legs will be held on Feb. 16-17 and Feb. 23-24, 2021. The second legs will be held on March 9-10 and March 16-17, 2021. 

The Champions League round of 16 games look exciting as always. Among the most challenging games are the Atletico Madrid vs. Chelsea FC game and FC Barcelona vs. PSG game. The other games will also be challenging as the competition is always full of surprises and unexpected results. The winning teams will play in the quarterfinals.

S.S. Lazio joined Group F winner Borussia Dortmund to advance to the Champions League round of 16. 

Lazio advanced to the next round after a draw against Club Brugge, 2-2. In the first half, Lazio’s Joaquin Correa scored the first goal followed by the equalizer from Club Brugge’s Ruud Vormer. Before the end of the first half, Lazio was awarded a penalty scored by Ciro Immobile. In the second half, Club Brugge’s Eduard Sobol was sent off following a second yellow card. Afterward, Club Brugge’s Hans Vanaken scored the equalizer. 

Manchester United crashed out of the competition after suffering a defeat against RB Leipzig, 3-2. In the first half, RB Leipzig’s Angelino scored an early goal followed by a goal from A. Haidara. In the second half, RB Leipzig substitute J. Kluviert scored the third goal. Manchester United was awarded a late penalty scored by Bruno Fernandes. Shortly after, Manchester United substitute Paul Pogba scored the second. 

Juventus defeated FC Barcelona, 3-0 to top Group G. In the first half, Juventus was awarded a penalty scored by Cristiano Ronaldo. Afterward, young star Weston McKennie scored the second goal. In the second half, Juventus was awarded a second penalty, scored again by Cristiano Ronaldo. FC Barcelona had some chances to score but the players were not clinical enough. 

Borussia Dortmund defeated Zenit St. Petersberg, 2-1. In the first half, Zenit’s Sebastian Driussi scored his side’s only goal in the game. In the second half, Dortmund’s Lukasz Piszczek scored the equalizer followed by the winner from Axel Witsel.

Chelsea’s game against Krasnodar ended with a draw, 1-1. In the first half, Krasnodar’s Remy Cabella scored the first goal. Shortly after, the Blue was awarded a penalty scored by Jorginho. 

Sevilla defeated Rennes, 3-1. In the first half, Sevilla defender Jules Kounde scored the first goal followed by a goal from Youssef En Nesyri. In the second half, En Nesyri scored the third goal and his second in the game. Shortly after, Rennes was awarded a late penalty scored by Georginio Rutter.  

The real drama of the night occurred during the PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir fixture. The game was called off following a racist incident that involved an official and Istanbul Basaksehir’s assistant coach, Pierre Webo. One of the match officials reportedly used a racial slur to call Basaksehir’s assistant coach. The fixture is postponed to Dec. 9. 

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund booked its spot in the UEFA Champions League last 16 after a draw against SS Lazio. 

Before the end of the first half, Borussia Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro scored the game’s first goal. In the second half, Lazio was awarded a penalty which Ciro Immobile scored. After this draw, Lazio will have to compete with Club Brugge to qualify for the round of 16. 

Club Brugge defeated Zenit St. Petersburg, 3-0. Club Brugge’s Charles De Ketelaere scored a goal in the first half. In the second half, the Belgian club was awarded a penalty scored by Hans Vanaken followed by the third goal from Noa Lang. 

Manchester United, PSG and RB Leipzig are all fighting for the top spot in Group H. PSG defeated Manchester United, 3-1. PSG’s Neymar scored an early goal followed by the equalizer from United’s Marcus Rashford. In the second half, PSG’s Marquinhos scored to give his side an upper hand in the game. Shortly after, United player Fred was sent off after a second yellow card, creating further difficulties for his team. In the added time, Neymar scored the third goal. 

RB Leipzig defeated Istanbul Basaksehir, 4-3. Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen scored the first goal followed by a goal from Nordi Mukiele. Before halftime, Başakşehir Irfan Kahveci scored a goal. In the second half, Leipzig’s Dani Olmo scored his side’s third goal followed by two more goals from Kahveci. In the added time, Leipzig’s Alexander Sorloth scored to hand side a victory against the Turkish club.

Goal hero Olivier Giroud scored four goals to help Chelsea defeat Sevilla 4-0. Giroud is the oldest player to score a hat trick in the competition.

Speaking of goals, Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 750th career goal in Juventus’ 3-0 win against Dynamo Kyiv. Juventus players Federico Chiesa and Alvaro Morata also scored.

Messi less FC Barcelona managed to defeat Ferencvaros, 3-0. Antoine Griezmann scored the first goal followed by a goal from Martin Braithwaite. Afterward, FC Barcelona was awarded a penalty which Ousmane Dembele scored. 

Russian club Krasnodar received its first win in the competition after defeating Ligue 1 club Rennes,1-0. Krasnodar’s Marcus Berg scored the only goal in the game.

In Tuesday’s Champions League action, Juventus, Chelsea, Sevilla and FC Barcelona all won their games to book a spot in the next round of the competition.

Despite Messi’s absence, FC Barcelona defeated Dynamo Kyiv, 4-0. The Catalan club were very quiet in the first half. In the second half, all the goals were produced. Serginho Dest, arguably the best player on the pitch during the match, scored the first goal. Martin Braithwaite scored two goals including one penalty. Substitute Antoine Griezmann scored the fourth goal. 

Juventus defeated the Hungarian club Ferencvaros, 2-1. Ferencvaros’ Myrto Uzuni scored an early goal, followed by an equalizer from Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo. The game was a draw until the 90th minute, but Juventus’ Alvaro Morata scored a header in the added minutes.

Chelsea defeated Rennes, 2-1. Chelsea’s Callum Hudson Odoi scored the game’s first goal, then Rennes’ Serhou Guirassy scored a late equalizer. Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud scored the winner in the added time. 

Sevilla defeated Krasnodar, 2-1. Sevilla’s Ivan Rakitic scored an early goal followed by an equalizer from Krasnodar’s Wamberto. Sevilla’s Munir El Haddadi scored the winner in the added time. 

Manchester United defeated Istanbul Basaksehir, 4-1. United’s Bruno Fernandes scored two early goals. Then, United was awarded a penalty scored by Marcus Rashford. Basaksehir’s Deniz Turuc scored a goal in the second half followed by a goal from United’s Daniel James.

PSG defeated RB Leipzig, 1-0 after PSG were awarded an early penalty, which Neymar Jr. scored. 

Lazio defeated Zenit St. Petersberg, 3-1. Lazio’s Ciro Immobile scored an early goal followed by a goal from Marco Parolo. Afterward, Zenit’s Artem Dzyuba scored a goal. In the second half, Lazio was awarded a penalty which Immobile scored. 

Borussia Dortmund defeated Club Brugge, 3-0. Dortmund’s Erling Haaland scored the first goal followed by a goal from Jadon Sancho before half time. In the second half, Haaland scored his side’s third goal.

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit back at Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos after Kroos criticized his goal celebration. 

During the Einfach mal Luppen podcast, Kroos discussed preplanned goal celebrations and claimed, “I find it very silly. Even worse is if there are any objects hidden in their socks. Aubameyang once celebrated and took out a mask. That’s where it ends with me. I don’t think that’s a good role model, either. What nonsense.”

Aubameyang previously celebrated his goals by wearing a superhero mask both at his current club Arsenal and former club Borussia Dortmund. During Arsenal’s game against Rennes, he scored and celebrated by wearing a Black Panther mask. 

After Kroos’ criticism, Aubameyang responded with a Twitter post saying, “By the way, does this @ToniKroos have kids? Just to remember I did it for my son few times and I will do it again,” he posted on Twitter, quoting the below tweet. I wish you have kids one day and make them happy like this junior school pupils talk and don’t forget #maskon #staysafe”

Current Arsenal and former Germany international player Mesut Ozil also weighed in on the issue and posted the Aubameyang mask celebration on Twitter, saying, “The best goal celebration.” 

Kroos responded to Aubameyang’s post on Twitter and wrote, “THIS Toni Kroos has 3 kids.” 

Many players including Aubameyang have celebrated their goals with choreographed celebrations. Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann previously celebrated his goals with Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ dance and Fortnite’s Take the L celebration. 

In addition, Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland celebrated several of his goals with a Zen celebration. Juventus’ Paulo Dybala does a famous ‘Dybalamask’ celebration whenever he scores. Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry celebrated many of his goals with a famous cooking celebration. Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo has a famous celebration which he spins in the air and screams “Siiii.” 

In Wednesday’s Champions League fixtures, the thrilling events and surprising events continued.

Manchester United’s winning streak in the competition did not last after a defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir. The Turkish club stunned Manchester United and won 2-1. Istanbul Basaksehir’s Demba Ba scored the first goal followed by a goal from Edin Visca. Manchester United’s Anthony Martial scored before halftime, but the Reds were unable to complete a comeback. 

The Zenit St.Petersburg and Lazio fixture ended with a draw. Zenit’s Aleksandr Yerokhin scored the first goal. Then, Lazio’s Felipe Caicedo equalized the score with a late goal. 

FC Barcelona narrowly defeated Dynamo Kyiv, 2-1. FC Barcelona was awarded an early penalty, which Lionel Messi scored. In the second half, FC Barcelona’s Gerard Pique scored a header. Shortly afterward, Dynamo Kyiv’s Viktor Tsyhankov scored. FC Barcelona looked nervous and shaky. The Catalan club does not look like potential winners of the competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the Champions League as Juventus defeated Ferencvaros, 4-1. Juventus dominated the game as Alvaro Morata scored two goals and then Paulo Dybala scored one. Ferencvaros’ Lasha Dvali scored an own goal, to keep Juventus 4-0. Franck Boli scored Ferencvaros’ only goal. 

Borussia Dortmund defeated Club Brugge, 3-0. Dortmund’s Thorgan Hazard scored one goal and Erling Haaland scored two. This win is Dortmund’s second win in the competition after a win against Zenit St. Petersberg.

Europa League champions Sevilla defeated Krasnodar, 3-2 in a 5 goal thriller. Krasnodar’s Magomed Suleymanov scored the first goal. Krasnodar was awarded a penalty, scored by Marcus Berg. Sevilla started bouncing back after Ivan Rakitic scored before the end of the first half, but afterward Jesus Navas was sent off, which was a big blow to the club. However, in the second half, Sevilla completed a comeback with Youssef En Nesyri scoring two goals.

Chelsea cruised past Rennes, winning 3-0. Chelsea was awarded two penalties, which Timo Werner scored after replacing Jorginho as the club’s penalty taker. Rennes’ Dalbert Estevao was sent off in the second half, giving Chelsea an advantage. Tammy Abraham scored Chelsea’s third goal in the second half. 

RB Leipzig defeated PSG, 2-1 as the French side suffered their second defeat in the competition. PSG’s Angel Di Maria scored an early goal, Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku scored the equalizer. Leipzig was awarded a penalty in the second half, which Emil Forsberg scored. PSG’s Idrissa Gueye and Presnel Kimpembe were both sent off. With the absence of Neymar and Mbappe, PSG did not look as strong as it usually is.

The competitiveness and enthusiasm of the Champions League continued during Wednesday’s fixtures. 

After last week’s draw with Sevilla, Chelsea FC defeated Krasnodar, 4-0. Callum Hudson Odoi, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic all scored. 

In a pulse-racing atmosphere, PSG managed to defeat Istanbul Basaksehir, 2-0. PSG’s new loan signing Moise Kean scored both goals. PSG was lucky not to concede any goals after a shaky performance. 

The Ferencvaros and Dynamo Kyiv fixture ended with a draw, 2-2. Dynamo Kyiv’s Victor Tsyhankov scored a penalty followed by a goal from Carlos de Pena. Ferencvaros’ Tokmac Nguen scored a goal in the second half. In the last minutes, Dynamo Kyiv’s Serhiy Sydorchuk was sent off and short afterward Ferencvaros’ Franck Boli scored the equalizer for his side. 

FC Barcelona defeated Juventus, 2-0. FC Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele scored a deflected goal in the first half. Juventus’ Alvaro Morata scored three goals but were all ruled out for offside. Juventus defender Merih Demiral was sent in the last minutes of the game. In the added time, FC Barcelona was awarded a penalty, which Lionel Messi scored. FC Barcelona missed a lot of opportunities to score during the game, while Juventus looked unorganized and inexperienced with the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Lazio and Club Brugge fixture ended with a draw. Lazio’s Joaquin Correa scored in the first half of the game and then Club Brugge’s Hans Vanaken scored a penalty in the second half.

Manchester United beat RB Leipzig, 5-0. Mason Greenwood scored the first goal then Marcus Rashford scored three. Anthony Martial then scored a penalty in the last minutes of the game. So far, Manchester United won all their Champions League group stage games.

Borussia Dortmund defeated Zenit St. Petersburg, 2-0. Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho scored a penalty in the last minutes, followed by a goal from Erling Haaland. 

Sevilla managed to clinch a narrow win against Rennes after Luuk de Jong scored a goal in the second half. 

The UEFA Champions League group stage fixtures are always a joy to watch. It is always exciting to see the best teams in Europe competing against one another.

Club Brugge defeated FC Zenit Saint Petersburg, 2-1. Club Brugge’s Emmanuel Bonaventure scored first, followed by an own goal from Brugge’s Ethan Horvath. In the dying minutes of the game, Brugge’s Charles De Ketelaere scored the winning goal for his side.

Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence, Juventus defeated Dynamo Kyiv, 2-0. Juventus forward Alvaro Morata scored both goals during the second half.

Bundesliga club RB Leipzig defeated Istanbul Basaksehir, 2-0. Angelino scored both goals for his side during the first half of the game.

The Rennes and Krasnodar fixture ended with a draw. In the second half, Rennes’ Serhou Guirassy scored a penalty, shortly followed by the equalizer from Krasnodar’s Cristian Ramirez.

SS Lazio defeated Borussia Dortmund, 3-1. Lazio’s Ciro Immobile scored a goal in the early minutes of the game, followed by an own goal from Dortmund’s Marwin Hitz. In the second half, Dortmund’s Erling Haaland scored. Shortly after, Lazio’s Jean-Daniel Akpro scored the third goal for his side.

The Chelsea and Sevilla fixture ended with a goalless draw. Neither side managed to score despite having opportunities to.

FC Barcelona thrashed Ferencvaros, 5-1. Lionel Messi, Ansu Fati, Philippe Coutinho, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele all scored for FC Barcelona. There was a bit of drama when FC Barcelona Gerard Pique was sent off and Ferencvaros were awarded a penalty. Ferencvaros’ Kharatin scored the penalty. Because of the red card, Pique is set to miss the upcoming Champions League fixture.
The PSG and Manchester United fixture was by far the most exciting. Manchester United defeated the French club, 2-1. Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes scored an early penalty, followed by an own goal from United’s Anthony Martial. United’s Marcus Rashford scored the winning goal for his side in the last minutes.

In the past few years, North American talents began to become more prominent in European football. Top clubs in Europe like FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have signed some of these talents.

USMNT​ player Christian Pulisic signed with Premier League side Chelsea in 2019. Pulisic had an impressive first season at Chelsea and was even nominated for the Premier League Young Player of the Year award.

Despite being only 19 years old, Canadian star Alphonso Davies is now considered among the top left-backs in the world. His past season with Bayern Munich was incredible. Davies won five trophies with Bayern including the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup.

USMNT ​player Weston McKennie is currently playing for Serie A club Juventus on loan from Bundesliga side Schalke. The talented midfielder quickly gained his spot in the starting XI of his current club after impressing head coach Andrea Pirlo. McKennie has the potential and talent to become a world class midfielder one day.

FC Barcelona recently signed USMNT right-back Sergino Dest from AFC Ajax. Dest is a highly rated right-back who was also wanted by Bayern Munich, but the player decided to join FC Barcelona instead.

USMNT star Tyler Adams currently plays for Bundesliga club R.B. Leipzig. Last season, Adams scored a late goal against La Liga club Atletico Madrid in the Champions League to let his side progress to the competition’s semi final. He is Borussia Dortmund and USMNT teen midfielder Giovanni Reyna made history with his club after creating three assists during a Bundesgliga game. Reyna is already attracting interest from elite European clubs like La Liga side Real Madrid.

Young North American talents are clearly having a great impact on European football and their presence will open the door for other talents from the region as well. In fact, recent reports claim that elite clubs like FC Barcelona are scouting players from the region.

Uruguay international’s Edinson Cavani is expected to join Premier League side Manchester United in a two-year deal.

Cavani previously played for Italian sides Palermo, Napoli F.C. and most recently French side Paris Saint Germain. He spent seven years at PSG and his contract with the club ended in June. Several European clubs including Atletico Madrid and Juventus were interested in signing the forward.

He won many titles with his club and country throughout his career including the Copa America, Italian Cup, Ligue 1 six times, French League Cup five times and French Super Cup seven times. Individually, he was the Serie A top scorer and Ligue 1 top scorer twice.

The forward was a key player for PSG and the first to score 200 goals for the club. He would certainly add experience and quality to Manchester United’s squad. Also, Cavani can add to Manchester United’s chances of winning a title this season.

Former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs praised Cavani and stated that he would be a good fit for the club. Giggs said, “​with his work rate, you expect him to make it.” Manchester United’s current coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has previously expressed his admiration for the Uruguayan forward. “Cavani is like a viking,” he said.

Manchester United have previously made some not so successful signings in the past like Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez and Radamel Falcao. Signing Cavani would still be a gamble for the club.

The club has also recently signed Dutch star Donny Van de Beek from Ajax and has been linked with several players including FC Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele, Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Porto’s Alex Telles.

Cavani would join United’s forwards Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, Van de Beek and Odion Ighalo. Head coach Solskjaer would then have many options up front.

In Switzerland , the UEFA awards for the 2019/20 season and the Champions League 2020/21 campaign draw took place.

Bayern Munich dominated the awards with striker Robert Lewandowski winning the Men’s Player of the Year and Forward of the UEFA Champions League season, Joshua Kimmich winning Defender of the UEFA Champions League season, Manuel Neuer winning Goalkeeper of the UEFA Champions League season and Hansi Flick winning Men’s Coach of the Year.

Belgium international footballers also scooped some awards. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne won Midfielder of the Season and Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku won the Europa League Player of the Season.

Chelsea’s Pernille Harder was awarded the Women’s Player of the Year and Lyon’s Jean-Luc Vasseur was awarded the Women’s Coach of the Year.

During the Champions League 2020/21 draw, 32 teams were divided among eight groups. Group A contains ​Bayern Munich, Atlético Madrid, Salzburg, Lokomotiv Moskva. Group B contains Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Group C contains Porto, Manchester City, Olympiacos and Marseille.

Group D contains Liverpool, Atalanta, Ajax and Midtjylland. Group E contains Chelsea, Sevilla, Krasnodar and Rennes. Group F contains Zenit Saint Petersburg , Borussia Dortmund, Lazio and Club Brugge. Group G contains Barcelona, Juventus, Ferencváros and Dynamo Kyiv. Lastly, Group H contains PSG, Leipzig, Manchester United and İstanbul Başakşehir.

In each group, each of the four teams will face one another. From each group, the two teams who have the highest points will advance to the next round.

After the group stage matches are completed, another draw will be held to announce which teams will face one another in the next round of the competition.

According to the draws, there are many exciting group stage matches like FC Barcelona vs. Juventus, PSG vs. Manchester United, Liverpool vs. Atalanta and Atletico Madrid vs. Bayern Munich.

In Wednesday’s German Super Cup final, Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich scored the winning goal against Borussia Dortmund to help his club win the cup.

The match was full of unexpected events. In the early minutes of the game, Bayern Munich’s Corentin Tolisso scored the game’s first goal. Shortly after, Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller scored a second goal assisted by Alphonso Davies.

Minutes before the first half ended, Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt grasped one goal assisted by Erling Haland. The first half ended with Bayern Munich winning 2-1.

In the beginning of the second half, Borussia Dortmund’s Haaland scored a goal assisted by Thomas Delaney to equalize the score. Borussia Dortmund’s comeback in the game lasted until Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich scored in the last minutes of the game to seal a victory for his side.

This is not the first time Kimmich stars in a match. The German right-back has proven to be among the best players in the world. He is a key player for both his club and country.

After the game, Kimmich received praise from many viewers and football professionals. His teammate Manuel Neuer said, “That was will and talent at the same time.”

Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick told reporters, “​As long as I’ve known him, his mentality has been very special. He is well on his way to being one of those players who shapes this team and this club.”

By winning the German Super Cup, Bayern Munich have now won their fifth trophy of the season. Individually, Kimmich has recently won the UEFA Defender of the Season award.

This season, Bayern Munich are favorites to retain the Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup. They are also among the favorites to win the UEFA Champions League.
In the upcoming Bundesliga match, the Bavarian club will face Hertha BSC at the Allianz Arena.

Germany’s Bundesliga has been back for a little over a week, and it seems so far so good. There have been no fans in the stands but the action on the pitch has not seemed to miss a beat and the players look as if they hadn’t had multiple weeks off. On Tuesday, the top two teams in the Bundesliga standings, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, squared off in what was an entertaining match.

Entering Tuesday’s game, Bayern Munich held a four point lead of Dortmund in the standings. With a 1-0 win, Bayern’s lead grew to seven points. Joshua Kimmich had the first and only goal of the game to give Bayern their lead just before the halftime break. Bayern’s win also extends their streak of 14 straight games without a loss, during which time they have won 13 of those games.

The loss for Dortmund was their first in their last six matches. Although they were on the losing end, Dortmund had their chances to win, having possession of the ball for 51% of the game, they had the advantage in shots 8-7 (although Bayern had the shots on target advantage 6-5).

Both clubs have six games left in their season, so there will be an opportunity for Dortmund to make a run at the title, but they will have to be near perfect. That all starts on Sunday when Dortmund hosts SC Paderborn 07 (Paderborn is also last in the Bundesliga standings). Bayern’s next game will be on the road against Fortuna Düsseldorf (who is third to last in the standings).

After calling out the video assistant referee as a “disgrace” during a recent game against Manchester United, the Court of Arbitration for Sport suspended Paris Saint-Germain’s 27-year-old superstar Neymar for three UEFA games.

The call came during the game that eliminated PSG from the round of 16. Manchester United was awarded a penalty that resulted in them capturing a 3-1 win.

In June, PSG and Neymar filed an appeal in regard to his suspension and a decision recently returned from CAS reduced the suspension from three games to two. This decision will not allow Neymar to return in time to face either Real Madrid or Galatasaray. However, it does mean he will be available for PSG’s match against Club Brugge in late October. Along with Neymar, the club will be missing injured players Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani as they look to grab momentum early on in group play with a win against Real Madrid.

Neymar certainly made his impact felt in his first game back with PSG amidst boos from the home crowd, as he was angry after his botched transfer attempt to Barcelona. However, they were forced to cheer when Neymar buried the ball in the back of the net to give PSG a victory over Strasbourg.

Neymar was voted the Ligue 1 Player of the Year in his first season in France, as his impact on the field cannot be understated. The deft forward has amassed 157 goals during his tenure and will be crucial in leading the attack for PSG during Champions League play.

Lionel Messi  announced that he would miss the beginning of FC Barcelona’s preseason training due to injury.

Barca released a statement, saying, “Messi withdrew from the session due to discomfort in his right leg. Tests carried out have diagnosed a grade one calf strain for the Argentine. Messi will remain in Barcelona and will now not travel to the USA for the club’s tour. His availability to come back to action will be dictated by his recovery from the injury,” the statement said, according to ESPN.

Messi is also currently serving a three-month suspension from his international team after his comments about the officiating that took place in this summer’s Copa America tournament, where the host nation Brazil won.

He addressed his disappointment on Instagram, saying, “I was looking forward to getting started but unfortunately I have had a setback in my first training session that’s going to rule me out for a short while. I wanted to be with the team and the fans that follow us in the U.S. This time it’s not to be but we will see each other soon.”

Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez will prove to be more than suitable replacements for the upcoming start of the season. Barcelona have one of the best depth charts in world soccer after their new signings this summer. According to BBC, Real Madrid released a statement regarding Asensio’s status, saying, “he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and the external meniscus of his left knee. The player will be surgically operated in the next few days.”

Asensio suffered the injury later after scoring in the 59th minute to bring the game back to 2-2 after Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in the first half and gave them the lead. Real Madrid later won the game in penalties.
