The New Orleans Saints have released veteran cornerback Janoris Jenkins in the team’s latest efforts to cut salary costs.
Jenkins was scheduled to earn $11.2 million and $1.2 million in guaranteed bonuses. New Orleans will save at least $7 million against the salary cap. The team could save an additional $3 million if they designate the release as a post-June 1 release.
The veteran cornerback played for both the St. Louis Rams and the New York Giants before joining the Saints in 2019. Jenkins was selected to his only Pro Bowl in 2016 as a member of the Giants. The 32-year-old has a career total of 26 interceptions in his nine-year career. Jenkins joined the Saints after being waived by the Giants in the 2019 season.
The Saints were over the salary cap by over $100 million at the start of the offseason. That number was reduced by 8% to $182.5 million for 2021 due to revenue loss because of the coronavirus pandemic.
