The Colorado Rockies decided to celebrate Pi Day (March 14) on Tuesday in a very particular way in a nod to math nerds everywhere.
The team’s players took a photo of themselves lined up (presumably on Coors Field) with their backs to the camera and their jersey numbers showing, in an attempt to reproduce the first 20 or 30-something decimals of the infinite mathematical number Pi, which begins with 3.14.
The Rockies then tweeted the photo with the caption “What are the chances!? #PiDay,” although they later confessed that the image was actually altered via Photoshop.

Die-hard Rockies fans may have probably realized it was a fake photo given details like the fact that no member of the team has ever won the No. 89, for example. The photo does look cool, and it is accurate, since the first 30 digits of Pi are 3.14159265358979323846264338327, although now that we know it was altered, it takes some excitement out of the team’s photo-op.
Dozens of other major sports teams, leagues and organizations like the U.S. Olympic team, the UFC, the Washington Wizards and U.S. Soccer decided to also nerd out on Tuesday to honor the math holiday:
Clearly, even in the sports world Pi Day is a pretty big deal.
