Ravens Deny Owner Steven Bisciotti Is Against Colin Kaepernick Signing

The Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday denied an ESPN report that claimed owner Steve Bisciotti is opposed to signing free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Ravens Colin Kaepernick signing

“We are going through a process, and we have not made a decision,” Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said in a statement. “Steve Bisciotti has not told us we cannot sign Colin Kaepernick, nor has he blocked the move. Whoever is making those claims is wrong.”

ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported the updated situation Wednesday as the Ravens consider adding another veteran quarterback to their roster with starter Joe Flacco suffering from a back injury.

Bisciotti was asked during a fan forum on Sunday about the possible damage signing Kaepernick could do to Baltimore’s “brand” given the fact that the QB is among the most shunned NFL players because of his national anthem protest last offseason.

“I hope we do what is best for the team and balance that with what is best for our fans,” Bisciotti responded, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.. “Your opinions matter to us. … We’re very sensitive to it, and we’re monitoring it, and we’re trying to figure out what’s the right tact. So pray for us.”

Bisciotti also mentioned free-agent passer Robert Griffin III as a potential option, saying the former Washington Redskins QB could get a workout with the team.

Veteran Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs told ESPN he would like to see Kaepernick join the team.

“Hell yeah, if he’s going to help us win,” said Suggs. “We have no issues. Not in the locker room. Hell yeah, we want him.”

Kaepernick became a free agent after he opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March. He threw 16 touchdowns and four interceptions across 12 games (11 starts) with the 49ers last season.

The Ravens currently have three backup quarterbacks: Ryan Mallett and long-shot candidates Dustin Vaughan and Josh Woodrum, as well as former Stanford and Clemson QB David Olson, whom the team signed on Friday.
