Just three weeks before the start of the NFL’s regular-season, the Baltimore Ravens have cut Pro-Bowl talent Earl Thomas for “personal conduct that has adversely affected” the team. Multiple reports said that Thomas punched fellow starting safety Chuck Clark during Friday’s practice. Now, with teams getting their rosters set for the season, there is a pro-bowl talent on the market and a lot of confusion about where he could go.
The Dallas Cowboys seem to be the early favorites to sign Thomas, who has expressed interest in going there before, but the cap numbers may be a little tricky for them. The Patriots and Raiders are always likely to sniff around a true blue-chip talent, but they may be a little cautious since Thomas seems to have run himself out of town everywhere he has been and the 31-year-old’s skills may be on the decline. But Bill Belichik is known for buying low on top tier talent that has been run out of town somewhere else, so I’d keep one eye on the Pats.
This is a major blow to the Ravens defense, who struggled to generate and elite pass rush last seas, relied on their fantastic secondary to be the engine of their elite defense and relied on Thomas to be the engine of that secondary. This is not the only piece of unsettling news coming out of Ravens’ camp when the team announced on that star quarterback Lamar Jackson was sidelined with a soft tissue groin injury. It seems like the Ravens are just being cautious, but after Thomas’ release it’s becoming clear that the Ravens may be a worse Jackson groin injury to falling off a cliff.
