Rangers Announcer Sam Rosen To Receive Foster Hewitt Memorial Award

New York Rangers play-by-play announcer Sam Rosen will receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for hockey broadcasting.

Rangers Announcer Sam Rose To Receive Foster Hewitt Memorial Award

He will be honored during the Hockey Hall of Fame’s induction weekend in Toronto this November alongside Chicago Blackhawks team historian Bob Verdi, who will receive the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for excellence in hockey journalism.

Rosen has been the voice of the Rangers since 1984 and is best known for his call of New York’s Stanley Cup victory in 1994.

“The waiting is over! The New York Rangers are the Stanley Cup champions! And this one will last a lifetime!” was the definitive call in what is still the highest-rated game in MSG Network history.

Verdi wrote about the Blackhawks for the Chicago Tribune for 30 years before being hired by the team in 2010. He will receive the award per the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.

“I am so happy for Sam and his family on this well-deserved honor,” his longest-serving analyst, John Davidson, said in a comment provided by the network. “Working together for so long, the thing that stands out most is his passion for the game. He’s a great person, an outstanding broadcaster and as the voice of the Rangers, he is a New York treasure.”

Although born in Germany, Rosen moved to the United States at the age of two and grew up admiring legendary Yankees sportscaster Mel Allen.

The Foster Hewitt is determined by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association and the Elmer Ferguson by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. The award is named for the late Canadian hockey announcer Foster Hewitt and first was presented in 1984.

“Sam has distinguished himself for over thirty years with his unique style and passion for the game of hockey,” Chuck Kaiton, president of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association, said of Rosen in a statement. “He is a very deserving winner of this honor and the NHL Broadcasters’ Association is proud to have him represent us.”
