Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics: Norway Leads Final Medal Count With 39, Team USA Finishes Fourth

Norway emerged the winner of the 2018 Winter Olympics after taking 39 medals in Pyeongchang, and set a record while doing it.

2018 Winter Olympics final medal count

The Scandinavian country surpassed the record 37 medals USA racked up in Vancouver in 2010. Norway’s Marit Bjorgen became the most decorated Winter Olympian of all time after winning her fifth medal of the Games in the final event, the women’s cross-country skiing mass start.

Norway also won the most gold medals (14) at the Games in South Korea.

The Americans finished fourth with 23 medals, 9 of them gold for a weaker finish compared to previous Olympics. The U.S. Men’s curling team and the women’s hockey team were among the big winners in the final days of the Olympics. Germany was second with 31 medals, (14 gold) and Canada finished third with 29 (11 gold).

Norway have now finished top of the medal table at eight Winter Games, but this is the first time since 2002. This year, they did it with a team of 109 athletes — 133 fewer than USA sent to Pyeongchang and 45 fewer than Germany.

Germany and Norway’s 14 golds match the record set by Canada in Vancouver in 2010.
