Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has been accused of taking the banned substance human growth hormone (HGH) while he was out for the 2011 season with the Indianapolis Colts.
According to a report first published by Al Jazeera, it was reported that Manning went to the anti-aging clinic, The Guyer Institute, to receive the hormone, which is banned in the NFL according to the 2011 collective bargaining agreement. In an interview with ESPN yesterday, Manning denied these claims. “Disgusted is how I feel, sickened,” he said. “In 2011, when I more or less had a broken neck, four neck surgeries, I busted my butt to get healthy. I saw a lot of doctors.” He did acknowledge though that he visited the clinic in order to use a hyperbaric chamber and get other treatments, under the authorization of the Colts at that time. Both the Colts and the Broncos have stated that they support Manning 100 percent and are calling these claims false.
The clinic themselves denied the report and the initial accuser, Charles Sly, also recanted the claims made in the report. “The statements on any recordings or communications that Al-Jazeera plans to air are absolutely false and incorrect,” Sly said. “To be clear, I am recanting any such statements and there is no truth to any statement of mine that Al-Jazeera plans to air.” NFL players have been tested for HGH since 2014 and no players have been accused of taking the substance since initial testing was put into practice.
Manning is currently still not active as he is healing from a left foot injury and will not play in the tonight’s primetime game against the Cincinnati Bengals, a crucial game for the Broncos if they are to keep their postseason hopes alive.
