Bill Belichick is known by his faithful Patriots fans as being a coach that will do almost anything to win. So why not give his hardest-working assistant coaches cash? This could be the secret to his six Super Bowl rings.
A book written by Seth Wickersham, It’s Better To Be Feared, chronicles the New England Patriots and deep dives into their success-driven culture. According to the book, Bellichick incentivizes his coaching staff with stacks of cash. Around the Patriot practice field, the stacks are called “green balls.” When his coaches have exceeded his expectations, he will give them money from his pocket. “Green balls” can be thousands of dollars in the regular season and – if your that hardworking, result-driven worker – up to six figures in the post-season.
The 69-year-old knows how to win and knows how to motivate his people. He has won the Super Bowl six times in his 21 years with the Patriots and is highly regarded for drafting all-time great QB Tom Brady in the 6th round (199th pick) and molding him to greatness.
Last season, Bellichick and TB12 parted ways after 20 years. This year was the first Super Bowl that Brady won without Belichick calling the shots. Does this mean that Brady is a better QB than Belichick is a coach? I’m not sure. We do know for sure that his competitiveness in the next couple of seasons will be frightening after trading Brady and then watching Tampa Bay win a Super Bowl.
