Novak Djokovic Ties Roger Federer’s Record For Most Weeks As Number 1

Novak Djokovic has equaled Roger Federer’s all-time record for most weeks as ATP world number one on Monday, after remaining on top for 310 consecutive weeks. In addition, Djokovic’s recent ninth Australia Open title win guaranteed that he would surpass Federer’s record on March 8.

This allowed the Serbian tennis player to add another milestone to his long illustrious career. Most importantly, it allowed Djokovic to equal his fellow rival Federer. Djokovic and Federer along with Rafael Nadal make up what is known as the “big three” because of their dominance in professional tennis. The three have dominated the Grand Slams for the past 20 years. Federer and Nadal have each won 20 Grand Slam titles while Djokovic has won 18.

The Serbian tennis player seeks to change that and said that he would look to make overhauling Federer and Nadal’s joint-record of 20 Grand Slam titles his top priority. The 33-year-old said, “Now, after achieving the historic number one for the longest weeks at number one, it’s going to be a relief for me because I’m going to focus all my attention on Slams mostly.”

The Serbian has earned his fifth stint atop the world rankings. The 33-year-old recently reclaimed the top spot from fellow rival Nadal last year. Additionally, the tennis player finished as the year-end number one for the sixth time, tying Pete Sampras’ record.
