The NFL was in shock yesterday after the Cleveland Browns traded superstar pass rusher Miles Garrett, one of the best players in the game, if not the best, to the Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams acquired Garrett, the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, who brought the sack at 23 this season. The Rams gave up young pass rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and the 2029/third-round pick. This suddenly and immediately shifts Los Angeles as the favorite to win the Super Bowl, while Cleveland hopes to build for the future.
Garrett was drafted in 2017, and he’s arguably the greatest defensive player in franchise history. He recorded 125 sacks with the Browns throughout his tenure there and has done so in his career, but hasn’t won.
Now he has an opportunity with the Rams, who are coming off an NFC Championship Game appearance against the Seattle Seahawks, where they lost 34-31. One of the main things in that game, L.A. wasn’t able to get home on Sam Darnold, and they weren’t able to get stops in the secondary. So they traded for Trent McDuffie from the Chiefs and now get Garrett from Cleveland.
It’s is just wild. The reason Garrett was traded from Cleveland by general manager Andrew Berry to the Cleveland Browns, who said it’s for short- and long-term benefits, and that one of the main reasons for trading him was Jared Verse.
But no matter what, he thinks this trade is an all-time commitment to winning now for Los Angeles. It’s a defining move. We’ve never seen it in the NFL offseason. For Cleveland and Garrett, the end of an era for a franchise that cannot seem to get things right.
