NFL News: Cowboys Inform Tony Romo Of His Release, Bills Keeping QB Tyrod Taylor

The Dallas Cowboys are parting ways with quarterback Tono Romo.

The team announced Wednesday afternoon that they will be releasing the 14-year veteran, who will be 37 in April, on Thursday for the first time in his career.

When the new league year begins Thursday at 4 p.m. ET, Romo will be free to sign with any team he wishes.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans are “very interested suitors,” signifying they will be fighting over a quarterback for the second consecutive offseason.

The Texans “won” the battle to sign Brock Osweiler last March and are now seeking help again for their passing game.

The Broncos have two promising young quarterbacks in Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch and could survive should Romo become injured again. The Texans, on the other hand, are in more desperate need of a quarterback but have less cap space and are already dealing with $16 million guaranteed to Osweiler next (2017) season.

Rapoport added that Romo’s release also demonstrates that the Cowboys were not confident they could inspire any trade compensation for the quarterback.

Romo was set to earn $14 million in 2017 with Dallas. Romo has suffered a string of injuries in recent years, the latest being a fractured back during the 2016 preseason that forced him to wear a brace. Romo also broke his clavicle in 2015 and has not played more than two straight games since the 2014 season. He’s clearly a huge injury risk for any team he plays for at this late point in his career. The quarterback has undergone previous disk surgery, suffered two transverse process fractures, two broken clavicles and had a cyst removed from his spine.

Romo ranks second all-time in net yards-per-attempt, behind only Manning.

In other NFL news, the Buffalo Bills are keeping starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor on a restructured contract, the team announced Wednesday, putting an end to months of speculation regarding where the Virginia Tech product would end up. In the end, money seemed to have been the main concern.

Taylor is set to earn $30.75 million guaranteed this season.
