The New York Yankees are in second place in the AL East and hold the top wild-card spot.
In 2024, New York won the AL East and made it to the World Series, but its season ended in a five-game defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Yankees’ offseason was a rollercoaster as superstar Juan Soto walked in free agency and signed with the cross-town rival New York Mets for $765 million over 15 years.
While losing Soto was a blow, it allowed the Yankees to sign starting pitcher Max Fried and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. The Yankees also traded for outfielder Cody Bellinger and reliever Devin Williams.

New York has also been active in the trade market as the trade deadline approaches. New York recently acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon and infielder Amed Rosario.
The Yankees’ offseason additions have paid off, as the team’s offense ranks among the best in baseball.
The offense is led by Aaron Judge, Bellinger and Goldschmidt. New York has also received valuable production from Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Giancarlo Stanton, who recently returned from injury.
The Yankees are top 10 in batting average, and are in the top three for on-base percentage and RBIs. The Yankees are also the best in the league for home runs, slugging percentage, and drawing walks.
Pitching has been solid for New York, but it has minimal depth, and the bullpen has struggled with consistency. New York lost its ace, Gerrit Cole, as he underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery before the season.
With Cole out for the season, Fried and Carlos Rodon lead the pitching staff.
The Yankees are in the bottom half of the league for ERA, and are in the bottom 10 for walks allowed. But the Yankees have the second-best batting average allowed and are inside the top 10 for strikeouts.
New York will be without Judge for a minimum of 10 days as he was placed on the 10-day IL with a flexor strain in his right elbow. Judge was the betting favorite for AL MVP, but due to his injury, his odds have dropped, and the new favorite is Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh.
The Yankees have also been without starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt for the remainder of the season as he underwent Tommy John Surgery on July 11. Luis Gil, who was a reliable arm for the Yankees during the 2024 season, is yet to pitch in 2025 due to a right lat strain.
The Yankees are 5½ games behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East, but if their key players return to health, New York will likely be a contender in October.
The Yankees are in a fantastic position to make the postseason, as their odds are -700. Its odds of making the World Series are +400, and its odds of winning the World Series are +1100.
