Historically there have been few opportunities for women to play sports at a high level and even fewer opportunities to do so professionally. The National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) is working to change that; their four teams are the first chance for women to earn a pay check playing hockey in the United States.
For New York Riveters goalie Jenny Scrivens, that reality hit home when she received her first check.
“It was such a surreal moment; it was something I’m definitely going to remember for the rest of my life,” she told uSports. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would get paid to play professional hockey. It’s something that I’m really familiar with just because my husband [NHL goalie Ben] plays, but I’ve never seen a woman get a paycheck for playing hockey. It’s something that I’m very very proud of and I’m proud to be a part of this organization.” Scrivens also documented the moment on Instagram for posterity.
