New Jersey Devils Sign Luke Hughes – But Will He Have A Big Impact In The Playoffs?

The New Jersey Devils have agreed to terms with top prospect Luke Hughes – and it remains to see if he will be utilized in the playoffs.

After signing the contract, the 2021 fourth-overall pick was spotted on the ice practicing with brother and new teammate Jack Hughes.

Once this season ends for the Devils, it appears Luke will have two years left on his contract with a $925,000 cap hit.

Regardless, it’s an exciting time for fans of the organization, as he is touted as one of the better NHL-owned prospects.

The 19-year-old as a defenseman posted an impressive 48 points in 39 games for the University of Michigan this year.

Going forward, he could be a huge part of the future of the Devils’ future.

But the question is will the team now give Luke a regular spot on the postseason roster?

If he does, he would likely be playing over defensemen Brendan Smith and Kevin Bahl.

And it’s a big upside play for the Devils, which could take its game to another gear with Luke in the lineup.

In particular, Luke could provide a boost to the Devils’ 12-ranked powerplay.

Hughes isn’t in Saturday’s lineup – but he will likely play in at least one game before the season ends.

On the Devil’s remaining schedule are the Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals.

As things stand right now, the Devils are set to play the New York Rangers in the first round with a home-ice advantage.

However, the team sits just one point behind the Carolina Hurricanes for the division lead, in which it would then play a wild card team.

So it will be tough competition for Hughes to transition into and it remains to see how he handles it.

But it shouldn’t have any impact on his future.
