New England Patriots Cut Nate Washington From Roster

Nate Washington didn’t make the first cut of 75 players before the August 30 deadline with New England. The Patriots have chosen to part ways with him after acquiring him from the Houston Texans for a one-year deal back in March. At the time it seemed like a great deal, inexpensive, for the 32-year-old’s veteran experience.

In 14 games with the Texans last season he recorded 47 receptions for 658 yards and four touchdowns. That put him in second place on the Texans in each of those categories behind DeAndre Hopkins. The deal between Houston and New England previously this year saw the veteran as a third or fourth receiver spot behind Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Dion Lewis as Tom Brady’s top options in the passing game.

The wide receiver roster for the Patriots boasts Edelman, Amendola, Chris Hogan, Keshawn Martin, Aaron Dobson, Chris Harper and DeAndre Carter.

It is a little surprising he was cut, but considering his age and the depth at the wideout spot for the Patriots, Washington might be better to find a team that really needs his help. Amendola is on the PUP list, but is expected to come back shortly.

Gronkowski is ready to get back to practice. He pulled up in practice August 15 after he felt some discomfort that turned out to be some bruising. As per usual Gronk’s preseason action will be non-existent trying to save him for when it counts.

For all the fantasy fans, Washington wasn’t going to be rated for fantasy with New England so perhaps a move will up his status.
