NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Speculates On How NBA Could Restart Season After Coronavirus Pandemic

NBA commissioner Adam Silver is explaining what went into the league’s decision to stop play and when the season might be re-started.

The NBA along with many sport leagues have been shut down due to the spread of the coronavirus worldwide. With a week removed from the decision to put a stop of play in the league after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert was diagnosed with the virus, Silver mused about the possibility of resuming play.

The commissioner when asked about the possibility of starting the season back up, he said wasn’t sure if they will. “I honestly don’t know, just because I don’t have a good enough sense of how long a period this is gonna be. As I said, just the fact that we were using the word ‘hiatus’ just a week ago, and that sort of the implication was a short amount of time. I think I said last Thursday not less than 30 days, just to give some guidance to our teams and our players, but at this point I really don’t know… We’re gonna try by every means we can to play basketball again, but the safety and health of our players and fans is first, so I don’t want to speculate more than that. That will be the condition of how much we can play — when public health officials give us the ok.”

If the season does start back up, Silver mentioned different options of how it would look because of the lengthy delay. The NBA commissioner came up with three possible ideas – options one and two starting the season over, with or without fans, and option three is to take groups of players an play for a big event such as a fundraiser.
