After letting Jim Harbaugh return to Michigan, the 49ers have struggled. And if the club decides to part ways with Jim Tomsula, there might be a veteran coach on his way to the Bay Area.
Mike Holmgren, who most recently served as the Cleveland Browns’ president, is reportedly interested in the position, according to Sports Illustrated’s Robert Klemko. His report was corroberated by Dave Mahler of Seattle’s 950 KJR who said that Holmgren has discussed his willingness to speak with the 49ers and desire to follow Harbaugh before.
Prior to joining the Browns organization, Holmgren had a strong coaching resume. He led the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks to a combined 161-111 record. He won a Super Bowl in 1996 with the Packers and picked up two more NFC titles in Seattle. He’s also been known as a quarterback guru, who could help stabilize things under center in San Francisco.

Whether Holmgren or someone else takes over the 49ers, they’ll have their work cut out for them after a difficult 2015. The only upside, though, is that San Francisco will definitely have a high pick in the draft.
