South Carolina Gamecocks forward Michael Carrera led his team to a 77-74 overtime victory over the Mississippi Rebels on Tuesday night. The 24th-ranked Gamecocks rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half of the game to beat the Rebels.
Carrera scored the game-tying layup with 43 seconds left in regulation and the basket that put the Gamecocks up for good in overtime. He scored 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Laimonas Chatkevicius added 17 and 10 rebounds. In overtime, Carrera also made the most important play of the game by hitting a layup while getting fouled, and then converting the free throw to give USC a 75-72 lead with 29.3 seconds left.
“We needed a big win like this one,” Carrera said. “We stayed together. We lose together, we win together and that’s how we’ve been doing it the whole season.”
Carrera also made 6-of-8 shots from the field, as well as 7-of-8 free throws and got nine rebounds.
