Miami Dolphins Affirm Belief In Tua Tagovailoa

The Miami Dolphins have recently been rumored to be involved in a trade for Houston Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson. On Monday, head coach Brian Flores attempted to change the narrative.

During a team meeting, Flores told his players and staff that Tua Tagovailoa is “our quarterback” in a brief but poignant message, sources told ESPN. Flores was not overly expansive in his comments, and he didn’t get into any specifics with the team as it pertains to the background of its involvement in talks with the Texans for Watson. Instead, less than two weeks before the start of the season, Flores’ comments signaled Tagovailoa would get to prove his worth as the Dolphins’ starter.

Tagovailoa started nine games last year, and threw for 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also completed 64% of his passes and went 6-3 in these contests. While these numbers are solid, many doubt the young quarterback’s potential and foresee him grading out as an average player.

Watson is considered one of the best QBs in the NFL, and adding him to a 10-win team from last season could propel Miami into the Super Bowl conversation.

Any trade to acquire Watson, however, would be risky for the Dolphins, as it would strip them of both Tagovailoa and a ton of draft capital. However, it might be necessary if the Dolphins would like to win now.

Another team source said owner Steve Ross has an interest in trading for Watson. If ownership wants something to be done, it most likely will happen. The Texans could start their rebuild, while the Dolphins could contend against the rest of the AFC instantly.

The Dolphins begin the season at the New England Patriots on Sept. 12.
