Mets Shortstop Jose Reyes Retires At 37

On his Twitter account on Wednesday, four-time All-Star Jose Reyes shortstop for the New York Mets announced that after a 16-year career that he would be stepping away from the game. “A young boy growing up in the Dominican Republic, I could have never dreamed of achieving all that I have through this incredible game,” he wrote. “Mets fans, what can I say? We never got the ring we hoped we would get, but I can’t imagine playing in front of any better fans in the whole world. Your passion and energy always lifted me higher and for that, I will always be grateful.”

While this will definitely be a blow to the Mets the timing of this is interesting. It would not be outlandish to suggest that Reyes looked at the landscape of baseball today and the uncertainty about whether or not the season will be able to go on for much longer and decided that now was the right time to step away. What is especially interesting about this is if other players decide to follow Reyes’ lead. If they don’t think they can play into 2021 and don’t think that this season is worth it, then they may just walk away from the game like Reyes.
