Rooney, England’s captain, became injured following a training camp collision with Phil Jones.

One of the three was expected to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is serving a three-game suspension, at striker, but manager Jose Mourinho may opt to use a different starting lineup. Some believe Mourinho may start Marouane Fellaini as a forward. Ibrahimovic’s ban will begin with the Chelsea game, per BBC Sport.

Mourinho will have his second shot at beating former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and he’ll be extra motivated following the 4-0 defeat earlier this season. The Red Devils have struggled recently, having last tied against Rostov 1-1 in Thursday’s UEFA Europa League Round of 16 first-leg game. Rooney missed that game as well.

Chelsea, the Premier League leaders, don’t have any reported players missing Monday’s game due to injury, illness or other reasons. They are undefeated in their last 11 meetings with United, last losing to them 3-2 in October 2012.
