Lee Kiefer Becomes First American Woman To Win Back-To-Back Gold In Fencing

The Americans’ surprise success in fencing continued, as Lee Kiefer won back-to-back gold medals with a win on Sunday in France.

After her victory, Kiefer tried to put her emotions into words when talking to olympics.com:

“I’m still stunned. I didn’t realize it happened just because it’s been such a long day with a lot of highs and lows. But here we are making history; it’s awesome. Thank you to all my loved ones who are cheering Stateside. All my loved ones who are here, this is for you.”

Kiefer earned first place after toppling fellow American Lauren Scruggs, who made history by becoming the first black woman foiler to win an individual medal at the Olympiad. It was the first time in 124 years that the United States earned multiple medals in fencing.

The men’s team followed suit as Nick Itkin won bronze in individual foil after finishing 12th in the competition when he competed in the Tokyo Olympics. The Los Angeles native will participate in team foil for Team USA.

Kiefer grew up with fencing in her blood. Her dad and sister competed at the collegiate level, and Kiefer went to Notre Dame to continue her fencing career. She earned a place at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics but did not medal. She finally broke through in Tokyo, winning gold for the first time in her career.

The 30-year-old now attends the University of Kentucky medical school, where she studies with her husband and fellow foiler on Team USA, Greek Meinhardt. The two met in London and crossed paths in South Bend. After competing in Brazil, Meinhardt decided to go to medical school and follow Kiefer, and the two married in July 2019. Meinhardt is now in his fifth Olympics at 34 years old, and he expects this to be his final appearance on the world stage before announcing retirement.
