Lakers Eye Walker Kessler As Jazz Do Their Best To Keep Big Man Happy

Walker Kessler to the Lakers is gaining steam in the NBA offseason. The Los Angeles Lakers are searching for a long-term center, and once again, Utah Jazz big man Kessler is at the center of NBA trade speculation.

For months, league insiders have linked Kessler to the Lakers, especially after Luka Dončić was traded from Dallas to Los Angeles. The Lakers need a big to play alongside LeBron James and Dončić. Recent reports say Kessler rejected a five-year, $140 million contract offer from the Jazz and has become frustrated with the team’s handling of his contract situation.

According to multiple reports, Kessler is at odds with the Jazz front office, which some sources have described as dysfunctional. While the Jazz still control his rights as a restricted free agent, the situation has fueled speculation that a team such as the Lakers—who badly need a big—could acquire him through a sign-and-trade deal.

From a basketball standpoint, it’s obvious: Kessler has established himself as one of the best young defensive centers. Despite injuries limiting him to five games during the 2025-26 season, he has remained one of the league’s premier rebounders and rim protectors when healthy, averaging nine points, nine rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game in his career.

The Lakers definitely need a player like Kessler and a long-term answer at center. His ability to protect the rim and finish lob passes would mesh perfectly with Dončić. Kessler made DeAndre Ayton look good, and he’s the type of center who can thrive in pick-and-roll situations with Dončić.

For now, Kessler remains a member of the Jazz, but the Lakers could get aggressive in seeking frontcourt help, and the rumor mill will only get louder. As free agency and trades approach, Kessler may become one of the most closely watched names in the NBA.
