Knicks Acquire Derrick Rose From Bulls, Waive Guard Tony Wroten

Derrick Rose‘s time in Chicago is officially ending.

Knicks Acquire Derrick Rose From Bulls, Waive Guard Tony Wroten

The star point guard has been traded from the Bulls to the New York Knicks, according to two people familiar with the deal. The Chicago Tribune first reported the news.

Along with Rose, the Knicks will get Justin Holiday and a second round 2017 draft pick. New York will send Robin Lopez, Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant to the Bulls in exchange.

The Knicks also waived 23-year-old guard Tony Wroten on Wednesday, just three months after signing him to a two-year deal. Not a single dollar of Wroten’s contract becomes guaranteed until October 10th, so the Knicks don’t owe him anything.

The move marks a big shift for the usually conservative Bulls front office, and seems to indicate they intend to rebuild their roster around two-time All-Star Jimmy Butler. Rose has one year left in his contract. The 27-year-old Chicago native was drafted as the first overall pick by the Bulls in 2008 out of the University of Memphis, and became the NBA’s youngest-ever MVP in 2011 at 22.

USA TODAY Sports’ Jeff Zillgitt stated he had asked Rose earlier this season whether he ever considered playing for a different team, and that the point guard said he had never even thought about it.

“Knowing Derrick as I do makes this trade a hard one,” Chicago Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said. “Everyone knows him as the local kid who became MVP for his hometown team, but not everyone got to know him like I did. While he is a terrific basketball player, he is an even better person with a tremendous heart. “I wish him the best of health for the remainder of his career, and I want to personally thank him for everything that he did on the court and in the community during his time with the Chicago Bulls.”

Rose averaged 16.4 points and 4.7 assists in 66 games last season, although he and Butler were rarely a good fit together on the court in first-year coach Fred Hoiberg’s offense. The Bulls missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 2008.

Furthermore, a string of injuries severely hampered Rose’s last few seasons. First, he suffered a torn ACL in the first round of the 2012 playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers and then, after missing the entire next season, he was kept out by a torn meniscus just 10 games into the the 2013-2014 season. Rose had surgery on that same meniscus during the 2014-’15 season before returning for the playoffs.

With the Knicks, Rose now joins a team that desperately needs a starting point guard after Calderon was frequently overmatched last season. Getting rid of Lopez also puts New York in the market for another big man to play alongside 20-year-old Latvian Kristaps Porzingis, who shined as a rookie this past season.

“This is an exciting day for New York and our fans,” Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek said. “Derrick is one of the top point guards in the NBA who is playoff-battle-tested. He adds a whole new dynamic to our roster and immediately elevates our backcourt.”
